“ Final Fantasy 13 then took this one step further by making summons an AI ally that fights alongside the character that summons them.”

FFXII did it first

PhoenixUp1927d ago

This article tries to hard to find ways how FFXIII & FFVIIR have similar elements in their respective combat systems yet neglects the various other elements from previous installments FFVIIR takes inspiration from.

Issuing orders to your AI party members is taken from FFXII, yet that aspect is never brought up by the author.

“The next one isn't as direct an inspiration, but both games have your characters taking on different "roles." In Final Fantasy 13, this takes the form of paradigms that players can switch between on the fly, changing up the skills and focus of their party members. Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a much more direct interpretation of this, with different character's playstyles fitting different needs.”

Sounds a lot like how Final Fantasy X had players switch to certain party members midbattle in order to become more effective against certain types of enemies.

“Final Fantasy 13 then took this one step further by making summons an AI ally that fights alongside the character that summons them. This, once again, happens in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with summons being contextually based on where players are and the environment around them.”

Not only was FFXII the first mainline Final Fantasy game to have AI party members, it also introduced AI summons to the franchise.. Not to mention that but summons being situational entities that the player can’t just summon at any time is taken directly from FFXV.

Everything you said was right but "Sounds a lot like how Final Fantasy X had players switch to certain party members midbattle in order to become more effective against certain types of enemies."

sounds like you just don't want to give it credit. P shifts are nowhere the same as switching characters. Truth is, that's what takes away from the freedom of battle in FFX that I hate. There's too much right and wrong. Not enough experimentation. FFXIII is experimentation and commanding characters, not switching out characters. Equivalent would be switching Serah and Noel in FFXIII-2. Weaknesses in FFXIII is handled by element, ruin or physical. Everything else is experimental and ways to either boost or hinder efficency. Those aren't even remotely the same thing.

Bu the FFXII thing is right. FFXIII, was only first doing that in an active time bar system.

“sounds like you just don't want to give it credit.”

How? FFVIIR’s aspect of taking direct control of a specific party member to defeat certain enemies is taken directly from FFX. FFXIII’s system of changing job classes midbattle is taken directly from FFX-2’s battle system. This heavily contrasts FFX’s and FFVIIR’s system since in FFXIII just like with FFIII, FFV, & FFX-2 you don’t need specific characters to perform certain tasks, just the job class that any character can attain.

“FFXIII is experimentation and commanding characters, not switching out characters.”

You were heavily restricted what job class your characters could use throughout most of FFXIII. It’s only until the late game until you’re even allowed to have any character paradigm shift into any class.

“Bu the FFXII thing is right. FFXIII, was only first doing that in an active time bar system.”

FFXII also had an ATB bar system in its combat. FFXIII’s battle system was called CSB while FFXII’s was called the ADB system and both are evolutions of the ATB.

It’s obvious that FFVIIR’s combat takes inspiration from a multitude of Final Fantasy titles, so the credit should be shared around rather than trying to stretch things to make it look like FFXIII is the biggest influence.

The Simpsons did it! The Simpsons did it first!!!

Edit: There’s a lot of games the ff7 remake is influenced by: type 0 for real time character switching, 13 for stagger gauge, 12 for allied AI summons, crisis core for general movement of characters and enemies, 15 for the wait mode, and kh for hot keys.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit123123101d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

The effort here is impressive. Hope it doesn’t get taken down.

He should have done it in Dreams though, the limitations of having done it in LBP are obvious.

solideagle311d ago

ah Dreams had so much potential, I think they should have released it on PC. one can only dream about dreams sale and popularity on PC. PC has modding/creative crowd and I think it would have been a hit

I love seeing projects like this. So much passion and time.
