Why Rocksteady's Next Game Should be Superman

Jacob St-Amour from Link-Cable Writes: "In the last few years alone, we have seen an increasing amount of rumors suggesting that the now acclaimed developers that is Rocksteady Studios who are best known for their work on their re-imagining of the Caped Crusader are looking to bring the Man of Steel to the video game world. This has been suggested time and time again and we have heard countless takes on Rocksteady’s unknown project that Superman will be the main hero for the company’s next big title. We here have already discussed that we are long overdue for a new Superman game and we feel as though there is no other developer besides Rocksteady Studios that should be at the helm of this project. So here’s why Rocksteady’s next game should be Superman."

But its not its a Batman reboot

AK911587d ago

Thats WB Montreal not Rocksteady.

UltraNova1587d ago

Hopefully RS breaks silence during E3 2020!

It's cool we all make mistakes.

FloydianAndroid1587d ago

I understand why people want a Superman, but I don’t the think people factor in the logistics of it. It’s much more difficult to make a Superman game than a Batman or even a Spider-Man game.

Flight is very difficult to get right on a physics level. Also, unless the story involves Superman not having all of his powers it just doesn’t make sense that he would have any trouble fighting low level enemies.

Despite would people say I don’t think rocksteady has any real desire to go away from Batman. The only ip I could see them pulling off is maybe a TMNT game, and I would kill for that personally.

BlackTar1871587d ago

TMNT would be insane. The reveal would give me chills.

gangsta_red1587d ago

"Flight is very difficult to get right on a physics level."

How is it difficult, they've done flight in multiple games. Even the Superman game from EA nailed it.

He shouldn't have trouble fighting low level enemies which is why you don't make the game filled with them. You give him enemies that do present a challenge.

Save the low level enemies for the meta game. Protecting citizens, stopping a bank robbery, stopping a high speed chase, etc.

FloydianAndroid1587d ago

The flight in the Superman game you’re talking about was not good in my opinion. It felt like time was slow to give the illusion that Superman was moving fast. I mean Superman routinely flies to outer space in a split second there’s no way to make the world big enough in scope to give it that feeling of speed. Also you’d have to be flying above all the buildings so that you don’t run into them. It’s not like Spider-Man where you have that freedom of movement.

TheKingKratos1586d ago

Yeah, Superman returns did all that and EA made it

and come to think of it, Dragon Ball kakorat did it as well with the flight

UnSelf1586d ago

Superman Returns got quite a few things right. Perhaps the one thing that got right more than any other is Superman's health.

We all know the man cant be defeated unless you force Kryptonite into the mix. We are tired of that.

Tie Superman's health not to himself but to something like the city. This way you dont have to curtail his powers. The challenge would be in protecting an entire city that is constantly under peril from a multitiude of crime and danger.

If done right, this will make for an excellent game. Superman Returns only scratched the surface with that system.

Imagine having a fight with over 200 people at the same time that spans across an entire city.

Or making sure you take it easy while fighting to avoid collateral damage.

Im writing the outline to a video game based off of my novel series and this is one of the major cornerstones of the gameplay - taking it easy with your combat to ensure as little collateral damage as possible.

SolidGamerX1587d ago (Edited 1587d ago )

"Flight is very difficult to get right on a physics level."

There's flight in lots of games even Batman from the same developer flies to a degree well glides but its still flight like.

FloydianAndroid1586d ago

I’m not trying to be argumentative, but Batman’s glide is not “faster than a speeding bullet.”

Thunder_G0d_Bane1587d ago

The low level enemies should be armed with kryptonite weapons which makes them still present a danger just like Batman struggles facing enemies with assault rifles.

The more he is hit by kryptonite bullets for instance it could weaken him and strip away some of his powers like flight, heat vision, ice breathe etc. As a mechanic so its also integral for the player to avoid the kryptonite.

gangsta_red1586d ago

"Also you’d have to be flying above all the buildings so that you don’t run into them. It’s not like Spider-Man where you have that freedom of movement"

I really don't understand the issue here, there has been numerous games where you fly above buildings. In every GTA game you can fly above buildings, so why would that be difficult for Superman?

And I disagree, the EA Superman was terrible but they did nail flight down and a lot of his other powers. I especially like how the radar on the HUD represented his super hearing. Touches like that would make a Superman game work.

If developers can make a game where you fight dragons, gods and explore a whole universe...I am positive Superman can be done in a competent manner.

Check out this blog that one of the coolest guys here on N4G has written about possible ideas for a Superman game. I think he definitely was on to something.

https://n4g.com/user/blogpo...

FloydianAndroid1586d ago

Umm not saying it would be difficult, I’m saying I don’t think it would be fun. Take Spider-Man for instance, it’s very fun to swing through New York and weave through the skyline, but Superman will just have to fly above all that and i don’t think that would be fun. It wasn’t fun at all in Superman returns in my opinion. My whole point isn’t that flight can’t be don’t, it’s that it’s not fun. Spider-Man and Batman have FUN traversal and I don’t think Superman would be fun. A Superman’s game seems awesome on paper, but with his power level and his flight and lackluster enemies, I just don’t think it would be fun. Id be delighted to be wrong.

rainslacker1586d ago (Edited 1586d ago )

The overpowered super hero thing was an issue for the luke cage tv series, because he really only had street thugs to fight. No super villain level or crazy bad guy to fight. He was strong and invulnerable to pretty much everything.

Then they introduced a way to fight hi., which gave him a weakness. Show still sucked, but at least it wasnt a constant showing of him showing up and just doing bad ass stuff.

Same thing could be done for super man. It's been done in the movies, although never to the point where you see superman constantly fighting street thugs. The super girl tv show seems to make her more vulnerable to random things which arent special, so it is possible.

I wouldn't be so concerned with flight, but itd probably be slowed down to accommodate a smaller game world.

For game enemy fodder, they could always use kryptonian invasion armies, or those kryptonian robot things or something.

Overcharging? Have these people never heard of sales?

just_looken1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

"Valve, the owner of Steam, is being sued for £656m over claims it is abusing its dominant market position to overcharge players.

The collective action claim has been filed with the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal by digital rights campaigner Vicki Shotbolt.

In the lawsuit, Shotbolt accuses Valve of ‘shutting out’ competition when it comes to buying PC games and DLC, which has led to 14m people in the UK being overcharged for PC games as a result.

The claim is seeking up to £44 compensation for every UK player who has bought a PC game or add-on content from June 5, 2018."

____________________________

So they are trying to take the apple/sony/xbox approach were there is only one store without ever using a pc for gaming.

Anyone with a ounce of pc gaming knowledge knows steam did nothing when competition and the launcher war happened but now every publisher that had there own launcher with games only available on that platform are slowing coming back to steam.

This "lawsuit" should be directed to launcher's like rockstar's as they have games only available on there like the gta collection or ubisoft with xdefiant heck epic launcher exclusive games. There is no grounds in which steam has locked down content to there platform except there own games though there are disc versions of those except half life alex.

Pc players still have the best choice on game buying with multiple launcher's and site that offers keys like my fav humble bundle but on the same platform we have the worst drm along with those 3rd part launcher's that need to run in the background.

anast23h ago

How about suing them for the game files that the customer should own?

Michiel19892h ago

yes, let's give storefronts the power to decide over properties they don't own, sounds awesome

anast1h ago

I don't understand. Your comment isn't clear.

Goodguy0123h ago

Steam allows 3rd party apps (which I hate) and...we all know that egs is the one that keeps buying exclusivity lol. A lot of devs and consumers rely on steam hence it's very heavy support.

VariantAEC7h ago

Imagine a child safety advocate switching gears and targeting how a business sells games, weird right? I could be wrong, and maybe old blonds in England with the name Vicki Shotbolt are a dime a dozen... but assuming this is the same Vicki Shotbolt of The Parent Zone, her company The Parent Zone partnered with MS in 2014. That's a long time ago I know, but apparently Shotbolt has ties with the UK government.

I'm not saying anything, but MS doesn't let partnerships like that die.

paulust200221h ago

If I get 44 pound from them I'll only be spending it in the steam store...fucking absurd ..one of the most ethical companies out there and largely due to them not being a public offering imo

Obsidian CEO responds to worries Xbox could shut them down, too: 'I'm not worried about tomorrow'

A gray cloud loomed over this year's big summer game showcases: Over 16,000 game developers have lost their jobs since 2023, many of whom were casualties of success at companies that reported huge profits this year. One of the largest cost cutters has been Xbox, which in January cut 1,900 jobs at Activision Blizzard and in May shut down four studios: Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Games. The closure of Tango was taken especially hard, as the studio was still basking in the light of Hi-Fi Rush, a critical and commercial success by all of Microsoft's metrics.

I mean, you should be. Because we now know and understand that even if Avowed is a hit it doesn't mean the studio is safe.

I hope that they're able to buy out their own Studio, like Toys for Bob's did, maybe some of their IPs as well, and go the Larian Studios route instead. We still need a sequel to Alpha Protocol after all. So here's hoping for the best.

Listen to your leaders, rather, good luck!

SimpleSlave1d 15h ago

I never said they didn't.

Einhander19721d 14h ago

Ok, fair enough.

As much as we all want another Alpha Protocol only Sega can make that happen.

porkChop1d 13h ago

Honestly, it would be pretty cheap to get the IP rights from Sega. They've done nothing with it and weren't interested in a sequel. But I'd be fine with just a spiritual successor that builds on what they were trying to do with AP.

SimpleSlave1d 13h ago

@Einhander19721h
It's all good.

But to be fair, while SEGA does own the IP and Published the game, it was Obsidian who created the IP and helped bring it back from the dead. So it's only fitting that they should be the ones to work on a proper sequel. And hopefully with a proper budget this time around.

My point is that I want them to stick around for this to happen. But on the current position they're in, things are bleak is all I'm saying.

Obscure_Observer18h ago

"As much as we all want another Alpha Protocol only Sega can make that happen."

Not really. If Xbox really want Alpha Protocol, all they have to do is to pay SEGA for its licence and give it to Obsidian or any other Xbox first party or third party to do it, just like Nintendo did with Bayonetta.

Alpha Protocol was quite a game.

MrBaskerville17h ago

I really just want a third Pillars of Eternity game. Not impossible under ms, but seems more and more unlikely with MS's new focus on high impact titles.

Of course they're gonna feign confidence. They're about to release a game so they wanna look strong as possible. I know for a fact they're deathly afraid, I would be to and they absolutely should be.

I'm afraid for them right now. MS can't be trusted.

GamerRN1d 2h ago

How come no one is interviewing PlayStation studios with the same questions? They had a significant amount of closures as well.

Strange 🤔

Pixykont1d 1h ago

It's now everyone's fault that you don't understand the nuance of the situation? Typical fanboy

Crows9016h ago

Right. PlayStation just closed 2 critically acclaimed studios....wait they didn't.

PRIMORDUS1d 14h ago

Keep supporting MS people and Xbox, they clearly do not care as you can see with all these closures. You want to hurt Xbox and MS just boycott their next console.

BeHunted1d 13h ago

Sony has closed down more game studios this generation than the number of new IPs they've created

Moegooner1d 12h ago

Sony didn't buy studios, just to shut them down. Smart ass

porkChop1d 13h ago

If we boycott everyone that closed down studios we wouldn't own a PS or Xbox, and would only play indies on Steam.

PRIMORDUS1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

If we boycott and let them know the reason why they would have to listen. Stop closing game studios they should have never been closed to begin with. I keep saying this but MS is worth 3 trillion!! They do not have to close anything. They will make money no matter what even without closures.

Aloymetal22h ago

'' You want to hurt Xbox and MS just boycott their next console.''
100%!! But to be fair, most gamers around the planet can see right through MS's BS and most don't care about xbox so no need to tell them what it's obvious. We can safely say that they've been ''boycotting'' the green brand for a long, long time. The proof is in front of everyone's eyes every time their hardware sales figures are published.

Crows9015h ago

If you just push that thought further...most of the world already passively boycotts Xbox

Nacho_Z1d 14h ago

You have no choice other than to crack on and hope for the best.

phoenixwing1d 11h ago

Glad someone gets it. What is doom and gloom going to accomplish for the studio? Nothing. That's why he said what he said.

Darkegg1d 2h ago

This is a spiritual or philosophical statement from the developer. Being worried is in itself a negative feeling that isn’t healthy. Live fully in the present moment and accept what comes. Reality is all about impermanence and the law of nature (transient).

Personally, it’s an industry I’m slowly backing out. When it comes to wholesome practices and quality life, video games fit into the “I can live without this”. Given how employees life is (generally), how they are treated, and contributions to personal health .. it’s nice to have video games in the right moderation but I equate it to other industries how the ethics of the operation is lacking at the expense of “at all costs”. The extremity of that idea is demonstrated from top of the hierarchy down. Maybe some of us care, many of us don’t, and some feel it’s pointless due to the insignificance at the microscopic level (what is the value of a singular action against millions). Only we can choose and control our own action.

Reaper22_1d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

I'm not worried at all. Obsidian are are awesome devs and I'm looking foward to Avowed.

MrNinosan1d 1h ago

Tango wasn't awesome I assume?
