Gears 5 Made Me Realize I Dislike Triple-A Games

Gears 5 was supposed to a Game of the Year contender. Why did I hate it, then?

For disliking something? I'm honestly coming to the same conclusion, too many AAA games feel watered down nowadays compared to how they were 10-15 years ago. Ironically Gears being mentioned is funny as it was the original Gears that turned my head from PC gaming only back to consoles again. There are many great AAA games though but I can count on one hand the amount of amazing memorable experiences I've played from the big three publishers in the last couple of years.

That's a contradictory statement considering Gears has been used to spawn generic AAA TPS games since 2006. It's responsible for revolutionizing third person shooter gameplay that's in pretty much every TPS since. It's horde mode has been replicated in tons of games. When it comes to hardcore multiplayer there is nothing in the TPS space that is better. The story isn't the most mature, but if you're calling the gameplay generic that is borderline insulting.

You clearly don’t know what generic means. It’s the generic form followed by the 3rd person shooter genre. Doesn’t matter if it’s the best at it, worse etc. It’s the template. Like how cod is called generic when it molded the genre.
Also don’t credit gears for horde. You know damn well that’s not the game to make that popular. Gears followed other games doing it like world at war and was criticized because no one cared for that gears game

GeoW did have a huge impact on gaming but horde modes did exist before it. The first gane that I personally played that had a horde mode was Alien vs Predator on PC and that came years before GeoW.

Dude, I think you need a little emotional support over video games right now. Read like one of my vent pieces but with a slant discussion on AAA gaming.

The big take away is that this entertainment may not be what your life needs right now. There's only so much fulfiment you can derive from games before you've seen and done it all.

I think this is a great moment for you to either play less or stop entirely and shift your focus, because you realise something is going on internally.

While many people here are trying to put down your opinion I feel it's a very valid one in maturing that you're ready to move on from only digesting entertainment.

Play different AAA games then or AAA games that are more daring which cover your taste but with some new ideas. This is a sign that your getting bored of the same crap. I find myself not giving a sh*t at all about PlayStation first party this generation and I've never imagined myself skipping GOW and Spiderman 7 years ago. Dreams is the only real exclusive that I've bought this gen. Now that I've fully discovered my taste, I know that I much prefer the 2nd party games like Bloodborne, Persona 5 and Death Stranding. Don't let others drive you to buy a game and watch gameplay first, read reviews but completely disregard the score. AAA games that you like exist, it's just that you have to have an open mind and stop buying the same crap.

I haven’t played a “great” triple A game since God of War... I was counting down days to BL3 and came out of it thinking it was fine but not great. Certain aspects of RDR2 were great but overall I’m one of few people I know (personally, not of) who finished campaign. I think the author is letting the clickbait/marketing hype get to him. Another thing is, people tend to play the first couple hours of a game (which is arguably the most polished) rave about it, and later don’t even finish the game but then don’t bother to go back to their friends and let them know it was just “ok”.

You’ve also got to remember that some people just eventually lose interest in gaming

It was an okay game but never in the running for game of the year. Gears 5 would have to totally flip the formula on its head to have been considered GOTY material. Still a fun enjoyable game though.

Its OK to not like a game, hell I still can't get my head round why I don't resonate with final fantasy, fallout or gears as examples.

I've been gaming since 82 and know what I like and no what I don't like, so it's a rarity these days I buy a game which turns out to not be enjoyable for myself but I don't come immediately into comment sections trolling the games shite.
AAA games like gow, spider man, detroit, DS, hzd, forza, gts, gears, last guardian, are great examples of AAA personally for me but guess what, its OK if someone didn't enjoy those games. Just don't shit on the game because you didn't like it.
Kingdom hearts or final fantasy are great games but not my type of game but I don't shit on them.
Its like all the DS hate atm, I've just finished it (108hrs) and found it to be a great 8.8/10, not without its faults of course but a gem and unique game which btw runs smooth as butter, no glitches or performance issues which nobody talks about.
Gamers today, its almost like they want the games to come out shite or fail so they can comment and hate on it all day.. We love talking all the negatives about games being broken but not word on this game being actually complete for once without 10 launch patches etc.
I wouldn't game without AAA games m, as 3rd party games are just run of the mill, rinse and repeat stuff we've all played a thousand times? Enjoyable games yes but nothing ground breaking like a AAA games gives you.

I definitely agree with some of his points about the current triple A scene but this right here is just blasphemy!

I haven't played Gears 5 yet as a lot of smaller more independent games or lesser known titles (Greedfall) have caught more of my attention as of now.

There definitely needs to be a change to the AAA scene next gen. Don't really know what that would be right now but heads of companies with bigger pay checks should try and work on this.

I actually see myself in a lot of what this article talks about. I just play these games and I feel like they are nothing amazing. I think games have finally hit the point where they have become so expensive to make that the developers take very little chances anymore. Its just more of the same with better graphics. Hopefully PS5 will reawaken that excitement about gaming I once had but I don't think it will because Microtransactions and recycled game mechanics have become the norm
