Why Tekken 7 Players Are Divided Over Paid Frame Data DLC

Some great features are coming to Tekken, but one's price tag is drawing ire.

I'm planning on picking this game up eventually, but I've held off so far as I just don't like the way this game has been handled, from characters being held hostage to entire modes missing. I'd say I miss the old Tekken games that were complete upon release but I still have those games so...screw 7.

The DLC is for sure but the base game is the best fighting game of this generation with it's depth and customisation options.

Any fighting game that have fighters as paid DLC is a no from me. Even more so when some of the fighters behind a pay wall are classic characters. Imagine if MK put scorpion behind a pay wall 🙃

The sort of players who value frame data wouldn't hesitate to pick it up and I believe it comes free with the S3 pass which many of us already have. Still, I'd consider it borderline fan exploitation, something Japan has always been good at.

For Tekken players, that dlc is mind blowing. Its going to completely change the competitive landscape. Paying for it sucks, but its not that big of a deal for me, because it will add a whole new dimension to improving your skills.

There are mods and apps that gives this for free, serious Tekken players already used them for years, this is just going to give advantage to low level players who pay for this over those who don't which is absolutely scummy.

I have a question, I've stopped playing Tekken a few games ago, but if serious players have been using apps and mods for free for years, what is the problem with low level players using this DLC? Why would it be scummy for these low levelers to pay when high levelers have been using an aid to the game that wasn't official for "years"?

I am not trying to get at you in an aggressive manner, just wanted some clarity of why is it good for some to use a mod but bad for others to use a DLC made by the creators?

Did the mod/app not give advantage to others when they used it?

I would think this frames data thing would give people a leveled playing field. The high levelers can now get more varied competition, and the low levelers will be able to step their game up. Seems like a good thing to me.

Abnor_Mai anyone could have presumably picked up the apps or mods or found the data online, what is happening here is due to the sales portion. Selling something like this, which will enable players to have an advantage over others, as compared to accessible to anyone who is interested, is a horrible move.

Yep. Series I used to love (Street Fighter, Soul Calibur) I haven't even picked up this gen because of their DLC greed.

These greedy developers are pretty much killing their own genre, fanbasd and titles with these practices. Hardcore fans will still invest, everyone who isn't a hardcore fan will shrug and spend their money on other games.

Smash is different IMO.

They actually fill the game to the brim with as much content as possible, and then once the game is finished they work on bonus content.

SF V for example has more expensive DLC characters than Smash Ultimate, and ones that could have been added to the base game which was a ghost town at launch (16 characters vs 22 DLC characters, while Smash Ultimate has 76 base characters vs 4 DLC characters + 6 future DLC) not to mention additional stages aren't included with DLC characters.

Unfortunately it's almost as if fighting games were made for these kinds of practices. Characters, modes, stages, costumes and even frame data are all things that can be sold post-release for some extra revenue. The genre is built on content that can be sold in blocks, small or large. We're in an age now where companies will do anything to make some extra cash, but with fighting games the devs don't even have to bend over backwards and specially design the game to make that happen. It's part of why my favourite fighting games of all time are from the days when the games were complete when you bought them.

Sgt@ first smash isn’t an fighting game it’s a party game so you shouldn’t compare smash to any fighting game. second you can earn sf5 dlc characters for free with fight money I earned all season 2,3,4 characters for free myself you can’t earn dlc characters in any other fighting game for free. third and final new added features and modes updates are free for sf5.

Absolutely shame on these developers/publishers. Frame data is a part of fighting games.

I haven't heard much about Tekken 7, haven't played Tekken since the PS2 days. But damn I hope this game didn't have commercial success. Companies like this don't deserve fans or their business at all.
