Microsoft Gains All Publishing Rights to Psychonauts 2

During E3 2019, we saw brand new Psychonauts 2 footage and Starbreeze Studios released a new press release. Confirming that all publishing rights for Double Fine's upcoming title now belong to Microsoft.

Imagine spending money to help crowdfund this game, then turn on the conference after not hearing much about this game for years to find out it's being funded by a full fledged company.

I mean...I understand how head-scratching the situation is, but it's important to read the fine print when you're crowdfunding stuff--especially when that was crowdfunded on Fig. That has it's own set of complexities from something more simple like indiegogo & Kickstarter. And I'm pretty sure Double Fine was explicit in stating the crowdfunding was to be utilized as a leg-up to court a publisher. Then said publisher, Starbreeze, has to back out from that due to financial costs. So, there are complexities to consider here.

People do need to begin understanding that crowdfunding is not legally binding.

Understand that you're "donating" and not "investing".

Indeed. And this gets even more pernicious when considering how Fig handles it's crowdfunding. There literally is language present in its marketing spiel that gives the false sense of certain-caliber donors BEING investors, with a potential rate of return. As much I dig Schafer's persona, there's some questionable conduct with Fig's setup.

Not buying a game on PS4 today for it to fund a new XBox game tomorrow. Microsoft bought the studio so let their customers buy the game to fund their next exclusive. Fully aware that the game may have already been a multiplatform game before the purchase, doesn't change my opinion whether right or wrong.

Tribal or trivial? I don't own an XBox and if Microsoft has publishing rights does that not mean that the money made from the game on PS4 would go into MS pockets and basically fund Psychonauts3 (if made) which would be an exclusive for XBox.

At first I thought that this new game was going to he exclusive to XBox and thought about how some argued that Spider-Man was a multiplatform game for years and it was wrong for Sony to make it exclusive for their console. I began to think the same with Psychonauts as the first game has appeared on PlayStation2 years ago and then released not too long ago for the current PlayStation, and we would not get to play this new game.

I was incorrect about Psychonauts2 being exclusive, so that is good for anyone that would like to play it on PS4, enjoy the game on your preferred platform.

I don't play online often. Currently playing online World War Z, and before that Ghost Recon Wildlands. Before those Killzone2&3, so it doesn't much matter to me if they use xcloud, might be cost effective to do so. Not really to sure exactly what xcloud is and all that it does and can do, and how Sony plays a part if any besides saving money not having to run and maintain their own. If you care to explain, feel free, enlightenment is always good.

Addendum: It was nice to find out that Minecraft Dungeons will be on PS4 along with XBox, so that's good for those that bought Minecraft on PS4 didn't help fund Dungeons and it be exclusive to Xbox which it would have well been. Only time will tell if there is a Psychonauts3 and it come to PS_, if and when it happens I will be humbled admittedly.

So fresh, so original. No salt but I'd rather stop with a series at one, rather to play one and two but can't play three, that would be kinda upsetting, then maybe I'd be a bit briney. As I said if down the line if proven wrong and I can play the third on a PlayStation console then I'll eat my words, but until then my stance is firm. In no way am I hating on the game or the dev or even the console, what I saw looked good, just not willing to find out I invested into two thirds of a story and may not get the third (if a third is even being considered). Also not willing to pour money into a publishers game when none of his other games will be available on my platform of choice. Yes I can buy an XBox console also, no i don't want to have two consoles to play every game. I don't mind XBox having exclusives, that's a beautiful thing, good keep that, I will see gameplay on YouTube and be content. Anyways I'm running on and on, probably babbling, probably not, is what it is.

The first game was released to ps2 and xbox. Im glad the 2nd is doing the same. You see when MS buys a studio that is working on a multiplat game, they stick to that plan. You cant say the same about Sony. They will buy a studio or game to keep it off other systems.

I know you're trying to make a point, but with out the games and studios names that Sony kept off other platforms i can't say which is the lesser of two evils.

Already said i know Psychonaut2 will be multi that's okay for those that want to play it on PS4, i do not and stated why. Enjoy the game, not trying to make anything between Sony and Micro beyond how I feel about this game and my purchase may end up funding a third which might end up being an exclusive. I would rather stop now on my own than to hit a brick wall later. Did you see where I even said if down the line if proven wrong i would admit as much, also how Minecraft Dungeons is coming to PS4 was cool when I would have t bought it give an exclusive. Still I would not buy it, mainly because I'm not into Minecraft, and again my money would\could end up funding other games for a console i do not own. Rather spend my money with devs that make games under Sony's umbrella, buying multiplatform when greatly reduced in price new or used.
