Today Square Enix released a new screenshots and information about Dragon Quest XI S for Nintendo Switch, showing what makes it the "definitive version."
Cyberpunk 2077 may be the standout release of December 2020 but there's still plenty of other good games on the horizon too!
Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition is a port of the Nintendo Switch version that was reportedly downgraded, however, it still looks great on the PS4 Pro.

Why even downgrade this game? It's not that it's a graphic heavy game from the start ?_?
The PS4 version of DQXI S is actually the Switch version ported to PS4 hence why the textures aren't as good compared to the original DQXI.
Cheap port and lack of proper budget to move the assets onto the previous version since S is made from the ground up using pre-baked shadows and being designed around Switch hardware.
SE is cheap af. The downgrade is actually pretty big when actually playing, the of actually felt like a high budget good graphics game with all the smoothness and actual high level effects. S looks great from switch yes. But I couldn't believe how obvious the downgrade was. I can even provide video of the big differences that hurt it. Low quality trees, the grass doesn't even look like grass and mostly static and longer while not being dense. MC legs alone bothers the hell outta me tbh. If no one provides a good video comparison in the next 24ish hours I'll make one and post. I'm so disappointed.

I agree but they doubled the framerate which is definitely an upgrade.
I couldn't care less about framerate in a game like this, if it means all the graphics get a downgrade.
I rather have a stunningly gorgeous adventure game in 30fps instead of a bland meh looking game in 60fps.
I love the art-design/style in Dragon Quest, so it will still look nice, but it's beyond disappointing how they didn't future-proof their Switch-build in order to be able to port it to other systems with the necessary upgrades. Especially when we're talking about stuff like textures, it seems that's something that could (should) be easily replaced with improved resolution files.

Well that’s your opinion and I respect that but I’d rather have a 60fps experience.
Its actually a fairly significant downgrade. The harder polygon edges, baked lighting and harder edges with minor but noticeable weaker AA is enough for me to say I'll stick with the original.
Sadly, the original lacked Japanese voice-acting and had terrible music, so that was never an option for me.
As it stands, there simply isn't any release that does this game justice. Every release has its own shortcomings, which is a real shame, because by all accounts, this game is among the best JRPGs this generation, so it deserves better.

That is some great news. This game looks gorgeous, but I could never really get into a Dragon Quest title.
But as it's going to be on Game Pass I might as well as try it.
Definitely this. Seemed really weird to me that they weren't releasing any kind of update whatsoever for PS4 and Steam at least some months after the Switch edition launched.

Im hoping they do a re release for ps4, Id re buy a physical edition if it had everything included. I bought it the first week it was out, and im still playing and enjoying it.
People can now stop complaining, the switch version is officially the best version out of all the versions. No need to mod or do anything. It comes with extra content, extra modes, everything needed to make this the best dragon quest game ever.
But people will complain here why square can’t add these features to their copy of the game. Just go out and get switch version and play the game the way they intended for you to play it before all those other versions came out to fund the switch version.
Im happy I played the PS4 version, it's a surprisingly stunning game, don't want to play it downgraded. JRPGs are way more fun on Switch though. Im enjoying Tales of Vesperia and World Ends With You.
