Well when you use that title... You make it sound like the criticism is unjustified

UltraNova2293d ago

Exactly. They were called out for their shortcomings, nothing more nothing less.

Germaximus2292d ago

No. If you actually played the game you'd understand why all the criticism is pretty much nonsense.

It's ridiculous how much undeserved hate this game is getting.

ossyc2291d ago

It's the most fun I've had with a shooter, it just needs more content and it'll be a world beater. I fkn love it.

-Foxtrot2294d ago

Hate? No no

Actual legit criticism

Spenok2292d ago

Hate? No no... Vitriol? 100%

Unspoken2292d ago

Phone game level content on a cutting edge PC engine. Please don't tell me this is acceptable.

TheColbertinator2292d ago

Played the game for myself and it won't hold my attention. Moving on from it and may uninstall from my Origin files by the end of March.

UltraNova2292d ago

What really gets me is that most of this backlash would be avoided if they didn't abandon SP outright. They should have used our feedback from all the way back to the initial reveal and made an effort to calibrate the game so that playing the "campaign" Solo would be worth it and fun. But no... Bioware of all the devs decided to give SP gamers their core fanbase no less the middle finger...

I sincerely believe that they deserved what they've got.

CorndogBurglar2292d ago

A lot of reviewers actually say that playing the campaign solo is the better experience.

This game's bad rep isn't a SP/MP issue. It's way more than that.

1. The game's design is just poor.
2. There is no interesting loot. It all looks the same and there is very little of it.
3. The gameplay gets boring quickly.
4. The enemies are terrible and uninteresting.
5. Severe lack of content with almost nonexistent endgame content.
6. Story is terrible, what little there is.
7. NPC's are annoying.
8. You're forced back to "town" after every mission.

There's more but I feel that's more than enough for anyone to get the picture. It's like the only good thing is the graphics and tight controls. Unfortunately that doesn't make a game good or fun to play.

KillBill2292d ago

@CorndoBurglar

"1. The game's design is just poor."
How so? What design point are you specifically talking on?

"2. There is no interesting loot. It all looks the same and there is very little of it."
Fair enough that all the weapons look the same with the only visual variance being in the very high level weapons having a unique skin design added. Variance is more so solely put into the inscriptions and their RNG values.

"3. The gameplay gets boring quickly."
Just like most all shooters gameplay is what you make of it. If you attack every scenario with the same plan then yes you can quickly get bored. But Anthem adds enough variance in attack styles and accouterments that most people I find are not really seeing the game as boring. You have 4 Javelins each with very unique styles that are interchangeable in game without having to start a complete new game to play a new character.

"4. The enemies are terrible and uninteresting."
Again, this is little different again from every single shooter out there. Where to amount of variance in enemy characters is not as great as we ever imagine. Though Anthem is a living world environment and new events and such will be bringing new characters as the chapters come out. We are currently still in the Prologue portion of the game. The only terrible portion of the enemies is when the AI doesn't live up to the rest of the game.

"5. Severe lack of content with almost nonexistent endgame content."
So you are saying you made it to end game? Are you not aware the story is not over yet? As mentioned before... the game is online for a reason.FREE DLC will be pushing down events that will continue the game experience.

"6. Story is terrible, what little there is."
This I would say is an opinion that I also do not share. Though the Tarsis interactions with sub-characters is rather boring at times the main storyline I actually am enjoying a lot. When the full motion cutscenes start popping up in game is when the interest really starts to peak.

"7. NPC's are annoying."
This I would have to agree with. Most of the NPCs in Tarsis outside of the main story NPCs are on the side of after thought/filler. They really could have done a better job fleshing them out.

"8. You're forced back to "town" after every mission."
No, you are not. Many missions do in fact bring you back to Tarsis but only when their completion results in a needed plot point in story that you have to pick-up. But other missions allow you to choose to go back to the Launch Bay and find other players to join up with and go out on other missions or even freeplay area. In freeplay there are so many options to do world events and such without ever having to step back into |Tarsis until the server comes close to shutting down.

Game is not perfect for sure and I could list a lot of actual issues that I have found with the game. But even they do not change my desire to continue playing it.

Kumakai2292d ago

i would agree with this review.

Traecy2292d ago

I never listen to hate especially on this site when it comes down to playing games including Anthem. I play what I want to play especially if it interests me.

LoveSpuds2292d ago

In principle, you should absolutely make your own decision but broadly speaking, when there is consensus amongst over a hundred reviews that the game is mediocre, it is probably fair to acknowledge that the game will be lacking.

This site simply lists reviews as they are posted, it does not generate hate for a given game per se, it is the comment sections that do that, so it's more accurate to say you ignore comment sections rather than the consensus of 150 reviews for example.

If we take the average review, they tell you the game is uninspired and very ordinary, but you may still find entertainment in the product, to say that all these sites are 'hating' on a game for no reason is kind of childish in my opinion (no offense).

Traecy2292d ago

I never stated the reviewers are hating I said the hate on this site. Imo it seems most folks just follow what everybody else does,if most people like a game & you have individuals that say they genuinely don't like it they'll bash you,if most don't like a game & you have individuals that say they genuinely like it they'll try to ridicule you which is just crazy. It's all about...To each their own, whatever floats one's boat.

sprinterboy2292d ago

You can have fun and enjoy a average game but is it worth your $60? I've watched a few streams and it seems average at best so I won't buy full price.

Thats what a reviewers job is, too help guide you, $60 for anthem, hell no, $30 6mths dwn the road with a more polished and updated game hell yes.

Traecy2292d ago

I hear you but if someone spends $60 on a game that you don't like for whatever reasons doesn't mean they won't enjoy it may you or a reviewer think it's average or not.

Kraytossmeoff2292d ago

Apparently your not aloud to like games what you want nowadays regardless....you either get branded “a paid shill” or EA’s little cock smoker” if your liking it fair play to you each to their own.

Traecy2292d ago (Edited 2292d ago )

Agreed. Which is ridiculous.

CorndogBurglar2292d ago (Edited 2292d ago )

Good for you.

However, when all the reviews say the same thing then it clearly isn't just the people on this site giving hate. Its largely considered to be a bad game.

But that's okay. There are games I don't particularly like playing that I know are very good games, like The Last of Us. I just can't get into it, even though I realize it's a fantastic game all around. There are also games I have tons of fun playing that are probably less than stellar.

Enjoy what you like. But let's not pretend like you aren't enjoying a bad game lol.

Traecy2292d ago (Edited 2292d ago )

The thing is to me it's not a bad game,to me I'm enjoying a good game & I'm not pretending no matter what the naysayers say. What folks are saying especially the bad is all subjective & opinions.

DerekTweed2292d ago

Man this website is ridiculous. They hate on so many games that you'd have to wonder do they really like gaming at all.

Assassins Creed odyssey got loads of hate in the comments section here but I loved it.

I think my gaming preferences are too different from the majority here that I can't trust them.

I hated Bloodborne, didn't like The Last of Us,. or Uncharted.

Spider-man was OK, Horizon Zoer dawn was OK, God of War was good but I feel like Playstation exclusives are too highly praised on here.

P.S Xbox Exclusives are mostly terrible too.

Traecy2292d ago

I like all those games you mentioned but I hear you, everyone has different taste & it's ok to like what everyone else doesn't like & vice versa.

CorndogBurglar2292d ago

I think you are putting too much emphasis on this site. Look at the reviews across the board. Its not just this site. All those games you mentioned getting high praise that you aren't impressed with? Those are all critically acclaimed games as well as fan favorites.

When the majority of people on this site, or any site, are giving the same feedback as reviewers and critics from other sources then it seems plausible that a game is widely considered to be either bad or good. 99% of the time this is how it is. People are bashing low scored games.

It's okay for you to like what you like and not be impressed by what the majority likes. But don't fool yourself into thinking it's just the commenters on this site being toxic or "hating". Not when that opinion seems to be the general consensus across the entire video game community.

Mark Darrah: stop harassing devs because you don't know what caused "the thing that you're mad at"

Former BioWare executive Mark Darrah says "be a human being, have some empathy."
Fans don't know who is actually to blame.
Darrah throws up a hypothetical that someone might not like how an actor delivered a line. Sure, it could well be down to the actor, but it also might be down to who was directing them, how the writer asked their work to be delivered, or maybe that was the only take they got.

-Foxtrot110d ago

This line from the video though

"Maybe the CEO of the entire company really wanted his nephew to be hired as a script consultant and this guy with literally zero experience was coming in and pushing for mandatory changes"

Like others have said that seems far too specific to just be an example...

Eonjay109d ago

Exactly. And the crazy part about this is that the people there just doing their job and trying to make a living are the one's getting hurt and losing their jobs. I am also not a fan of targeting specific individuals. Its poor form. These are video games.

RiseNShine109d ago

If only there was a single problem with this game, it was a train wreck waiting to crash and burn.

thorstein109d ago (Edited 109d ago )

As usual, common sense falls on deaf ears. I mean, he thinks this article is about Dragon Age Veilguard. He rejects logic and evidence.

What possible logic or evidence can you provide to convince him otherwise.

Notellin108d ago

The community has spoken and would like for you to stop instead.

Armaggedon108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

@Thorstein

Cant expect people to see reason now a days.

@Notellin
Sure. Go ahead and bury yourselves beneath your own ignorance.

thorstein109d ago

This article isn't about that game.

Gamingsince1981108d ago

Veilguard was complete trash though anyway.

Notellin108d ago

Then don't use it for the thumbnail. It's misleading on purpose to draw this reaction.

thorstein108d ago

Or...I don't know... read the article.

staticall109d ago

Personally, i think we should always blame and criticize the management (especially top management; like with EA - every screw up should be blamed on Andrew Wilson and his goons). They're the ones with the power, the ones who have the last say in the matter - whatever is the plot details, gameplay, microtransactions, budget and «It's ok that it's buggy and crashes constantly, release the game ASAP, we'll fix it later».

Harrasement is not ok in my book, although, nowadays, many people paint every type of criticism (whatever warranted or not) as harrasement. Which is a very narrowminded and waters down actual harrasement problems. But, i guess, it makes it easier to ignore everything bad you see aimed towards yourself.

I would also like to add, that this topic is a double-edged sword, some developers are being mean to their customers, calling them names or any sort of -isms, that happens. In that case, don't be surprised, that, when you're «firing shots», customers are «shooting back» at you.

SimpleDad109d ago

We do want better games, and we get them by criticizing bad ones.

Eonjay109d ago

No you don't. Everything is criticized by somebody these days. By that logic everything is bad. Thats just more fuel for the echo chamber. The way you get games you want is by supporting the types of games you want by buying them. You want more games like Astrobot? Buy Astrobot. Recommend it to others. Its not about bashing what you don't like. its about supporting what you do like. Money talks.

SimpleDad109d ago

Absolutely, I buy my games cause subscriptions are also part of the problem. I don't criticize myself personally, but by observing criticism by others, I avoid purchasing games with problems.

TheColbertinator109d ago

No we don't. FIFA and Madden get criticized every year and the games get worse and more overpriced.

Christopher109d ago

Lack of profit is the only way to do it, but people are fine buying shit games every day, just not the shit games we talk about regularly here. We distract ourselves with this stupid 'social mirage' issue and the corporations get to keep doing less and less but selling it for more and more.

Armaggedon109d ago

“Better game” with big air quotes. What you like more, makes more sense.

Gamingsince1981108d ago

Says the only guy in the world that likes vanguard, I bet you like avowed aswell huh

Empathy has no value when it comes to killing a franchise loved by thousands.

Eonjay109d ago

Empathy always has value when dealing with other human beings. This includes empathy towards the fans who feel scorned and the devs who worked their asses off.

Anthem Sold A Solid 5 Million Copies In Its Lifetime

The multiplayer action RPG shipped a whopping 2 million copies in its first week alone.

JEECE537d ago

A nice piece of proof-as if anymore was needed-that a game isn't automatically a success if it sells "millions of copies."

RiseNShine537d ago

I don't know if it's still possible, but if it still works, PLAY IT. It's a fantastic RPG on it's own, incredible graphics and story, well worth the Bioware name, i don't know how bad it was on release, but when i played years later it was a great single player RPG well worth playing.

ChasterMies537d ago

This a good example of why you should be hesitant to buy a game at launch.

--Onilink--537d ago

Its has been on sale multiple times for like $2-3… and even when not that aggressively dropped, it is usually in the under $10 category of any sale

BlackCountryBob537d ago

That’s good, but also worth pointing out that after maybe 3 months on sale, this game was selling for about a tenner. Reminds me a bit of Days Gone, good sales overall but only after huge discounts so unlikely to make large profit

Worst Big Budget Games

What a shitty f***** list! Most of the games on it were great fun. Bullshit list.

chantii_mmohaven880d ago

yep this is truly a b*tthurt list :/

MadLad879d ago

I think the only one I agreed on was Anthem, and even that isn't horrendous.

Knushwood Butt881d ago

Anthem; I'd forgotten that game existed. I remember thinking the trailer was BS though; turns out I was right.

Cueil879d ago

the game wasn't bad though

RavenWolfx880d ago

"Worst big budget games" and immediately lists Genshin Impact, a game that has $4 billion in revenue.

blackblades880d ago

$3 billion and counting along with alot of users. I disagree with that being on the list. This list is just a person opinion without merit

monkey602880d ago

I havent played Genshin Impact and Mafia 3 was alright. The rest though I kind of agree with.
I loved the 1st Kane and Lynch and I could not understand how the 2nd game was as bad as it was.
