Your platform could have all the best feature but if it lacks in games than all those features mean next to nothing. AAA high quality exclusives are what makes or break a console(don't believe me just look at Nintendo they have stayed in business up until now without much 3rd party support but have the strongest and most know exclusives alongside sony)

coming this year there is a reason sony released pro a year before xbox x as that's their strategy moving forward. By releasing the pro a year before they can release ps5 now and gain the market share while ms may have to wait till 2021 because they released the x not too long ago

If they released PS5 this year with backwards compatibility and upgraded graphics for games like Death Stranding, The Last of Us II, Ghost of Tsushima, Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake, etc, they'll essentially have the greatest launch in gaming history- bar none.

That's without even launching a "new" game that is only exclusive to PS5. I agree that PS5 should launch as soon as it's possible. I'm not sure how far along Navi is, but as far as 7nm goes, we're not getting another boost in 2020-2021 to a better node. So once Navi is finished, there's NO point in waiting as we'll just be making the console more outdated, not getting more power for a better price.

So I'm hoping for 2019 as it easily makes the most logical sense, but factors out of their control could hold it back to 2020 and that's understandable.

I think they will launch a PS5 as soon as AMD produces a new GPU architecture. The current Vega is too RAM hungry to where it not only needs a lot of RAM, but very expensive RAM that would make the console cost a ton. It would be terrible to have the GPU have that big bottleneck and AMD should have something around the end of 2019 in development and testing cycles. We have plenty of time still. Both MS and Sony will continue to focus on AMD to maintain better compatibility, relations, and cost-cutting that supplying their core chips from them provides. 2020 will be the earliest is my guess.

I agree that Sony has always done a phenomenal job of creating exclusives for their platforms and I also believe it's extremely likely that they will continue to do so next generation.

I don't agree that domination is assured though (I think that word is overly dramatic and hyperbolic most of the time anyway), because it really depends on what Microsoft and Nintendo do next generation.

If Nintendo decided to finally get back to making a powerful home console that could run multiplats on par with the other two consoles it could dramatically change the outcome. If Microsoft managed to finally start putting out a significant amount of exclusives it could change the outcome.

It's not that I think either of those scenarios are assured. I think the first is unlikely. And while Microsoft will almost certainly do better on the exclusives front than they did this gen it remains to be seen exactly how well that actually will be.

All I'm saying is that "domination" is never assured. It depends on the decisions that all three platform holders make. The PS3 didn't dominate the 360. It was actually pretty much a tie by the time the generation wrapped up. And that was because the way Sony and Microsoft handled their platforms last generation was different than the previous generation and this current generation.

Well, they did buy a few development houses the past year, I think that was to have some future exclusives for the next gen Xbox. But, Microsoft tends to get "hoisted by their own Petard", with delusions of dominating the gaming console industry. It is a major flaw in corporate Ms as a whole, They are use to entering a market, killing the dominant players either through strategic acquisitions of tech that is essential to that industry and denying it's use to the competition, also they generally come in very hot and make grand promises that are "just over the horizon" that never materialize as an actual feature, that is a strategy to keep you from buying the competing product because you are waiting for the release of this amazing vaporware from Ms. these are just a taste of what MS does to try to win. they are not happy as one company in a pool of competitors...competing fairly. The MS way is to dominate and extinguish all competitors.
The Beauty of the console market is that each console is it's own ecosystem with it's own technology, a near impossible nut for MS to crack, The only way the could most likely kill the competition is to give away the Xbox and it's games for a few years, that would most likely kill all competitors ability to sustain themselves But, it's a dangerous strategy because you foment an attitude in the customer that the value of gaming is zero, not a good thing to inculcate in your customer base.

The way things are going, apparently Sony is going to fail miserably next gen. It's probably the most twisted logic I can imagine to see people say that somehow, Sony riding off an extreme high of respect for the games they release, to the point that no other publisher in history has ever matched their output of quantity of critically acclaimed games, and their system is still selling well, despite not having really dropped it's price significantly, and is still considered the go to console by the market at large, is now a detriment to them in the future.

All because MS has game pass, and brought some studios, or Nintendo released a handheld with a TV out.

Its the most illogical conclusion one could come up with. Last gen, when Sony and MS were pretty much neck and neck, and despite some weak years at the end of 360's life, they still had a lot of consumer good will, you didn't see so much stretch to try and prove Xbox would rule this gen. Sure, it was there, but you saw the Sony articles like this more, because at the time, it really could have gone either way....or at least, it wasn't so outlandish to suggest that it could go one way or the other.

PS2 dominated its generation and Sony went in to the PS3 generation without any adjustments. Sony thought they'd just follow the PS2 blueprint again and PS3 would trounce 360. Sony was wrong. They didn't bank on xbox learning from their mistakes and making adjustments. Ps3 out sold 360 by 1 or 2 million, but coming from the previous generation where ps2 outsold og xbox by over 100 million that was a big blunder on sony's part. Clearly what worked for ps2 to sell 100 million over xbox did not work again as ps3 only sole 1 million more than 360.

To sony's credit they realized that what they did with the ps2, did not work anymore. for example having highly customized hardware on ps2. they had highly customized hardware on ps3 and it was bad for devs to work on and they preferred 360. So sony made adjustments, they brought on mark cerny and a different more open approach. instead of dictating to devs how things would be, mark asked for developer input. the result was ps4 was a markedly different development experience than the ps3 and ps4 was very successfull for it.

i will argue that phil spencer is to xbox what mark cerny was to ps4. microsoft has saw that their original vision and focus under don mattrick did not work and have made adjustments with phil. now they are much more focused on games and customer value. great gaming hardware, new studio investments like ninja theory, game pass, backward compatibility, etc.

If sony is planning to re-run the ps4 blue print, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. but they must realize that microsoft will also take plays out of the ps4 playbook and try to one up them. So sony should not plan on repeating ps4 success they should plan on one upping and doing better than ps4 because you can be certain that's what their competition is working on. we saw the first glimps of this with xbox one x design decisions. launching a value add service like game pass, and the purchase of a single player narrative driven studio like ninja theory known for heavenly sword, enslaved, and hellblade. whereas previously people would expect microsoft to invest in studios with potential for great online gaming experience like they originally did with the respawn deal for titalfall instead of the singer player focus that ninja theory brings.

microsoft will have their best pitchers up so sony gotta make sure their batters are on point or they might get struck out.

I strongly disagree. While exclusives are certainly important they are not all that matters. There are a variety of other aspects of gaming platforms that matter to people.

If Microsoft improves their output of exclusives to the point they're matching Sony's output and also manage to have a handful of other desirable advantages don't you think that would change things? Shouldn't Sony have done more in that scenario in order to stay ahead?

My point is, it depends on what Microsoft and Nintendo do. If Sony only does what they've done this generation, while Nintendo and Microsoft improve, Sony WILL lose market share. The only way Sony can get away with doing the same thing they did this generation and not lose market share is if Nintendo and Microsoft do exactly what they did this generation. And I honestly don't think that will happen. If Sony doesn't want to lose market share they have to evolve and improve just as their competitors are likely to do.

Outside of UHD, and for the time being BC, what exactly does MS offer that Sony doesn't? Game Pass? PSNow still has more games, just doesn't do day one releases.

Games are the reason people buy consoles. It's about having games that appeal to people. The console that has more appealing games, is going to sell more, and supplemental features aren't as important anymore. It's the exclusives which define the system. Sometimes, there are features which can help add value or appeal(Like Sony's social media stuff). Sometimes, multi-plats can be the driving force, but they aren't a pro or con for either system, so if people look beyond the individual system seller, they're going to look at what is only available on a platform.

The only places that MS and Nintendo can improve is on games, and I'd argue that Nintendo does it's own games in its own ways, and they try to appeal to those gamers who want that. MS competes directly in the same market as Sony. All these features they come up with aren't doing it for them, so the only place they have to improve is the games. If they improve, it means they'll be on par with Sony, not that Sony then has to adapt to be where the competition finally got to. it just means that Sony will have to try and deliver more appealing software than MS.

In other words, true competition.

You use a lot of ifs and thens. but you still discount the fact that Sony has set the bar that the others have to achieve, before people decide that it's time to say Sony has to adapt or improve. As it is, Sony just has to keep doing what it's doing, and that's setting the bar. It's up to the other companies to raise the bar, or Sony may just keep doing it themselves like they've been doing all gen.

No, exclusives are not all that matters, and other aspects are not merely "supplemental features" as you make it sound.

Why is the PC my favorite platform? Is it solely because it has the best exclusives? No, not at all. I honestly don't even care about exclusivity. Every single PC exclusive could be announced tomorrow for other platforms and it wouldn't change my feelings about the platform very much. I honestly get no thrill from gamers on other platforms not being able to play certain games that I can play.

On the other hand, things like having my games look their best and run with smooth framerates matters to me a lot. Being able to have access to my entire library of games and enjoy any of them even if they are older (thanks to backwards compatibility) matters to me a lot. Having free online matters to me a lot. Having the ability to use mods matters to me a lot. Being able to customize the hardware and software to my needs and preferences matters to me a lot. Being able to play my games on a variety of different devices, including my laptop and desktop PC, matters to me a lot.

I could go on, but I think you get my point.

I'm hardly alone in this. I know many other PC gamers feel the same way. And I know that people choose their consoles for a variety of reasons too.

No matter how much some of you pretend that exclusives are all that matter it won't change the reality that there are other things that people care about as well.

Who knows, maybe for you exclusives are really what gets your motor revving and are close to being all that matters. I'm not discounting that possibility. I fully recognize that exclusives are one important factor that many people consider. What I take issue with is that some of you refuse to acknowledge that exclusives are not the end all be all for many other gamers.

I've seen people come to this site and mention many other different qualities that they find desirable in a console. For some people portability is very important and they might choose the Switch. Other people love the straightforwardness of consoles but still care a lot about how their games look and run and therefore may choose an Xbox One X. These are just a couple examples. There are plenty of other qualities that people weigh and consider when deciding which console to buy.

Now, here's where you'll come back with the faulty reasoning that "Sony has the most exclusives and they have sold the most consoles so this proves that people don't care about much else other than exclusives".

There's a lot wrong with this. Part of the error can be described as a basic post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy (meaning “after this, therefore because of this”). You're attributing nearly all of the PS4s sales success simply to its exclusives, which fails to account for all the other factors contributing to its success. Some of these include:
-A cheaper launch price, which helped them gain a strong foothold early on.
-Stronger brand recognition globally.
-Significantly more money spent on advertising.
-Stronger hardware for most of the generation.
-Superior quality in multiplatform games among base consoles.
-Microsoft's blunders leading up to the launch of the Xbox One which lost them a lot of good will.
-Nintendo launching the Switch so much later.
-The excellent job Sony did at presenting the PS4 as a platform friendly to developers and gamers alike.
-The fact that Sony consoles have sold very well in previous generations and people often tend to stay with what they're familiar with and where they've already made friends.

All of these things, and many other smaller factors, contributed to the PS4's success. To act like it's nearly all because of exclusive games is extremely disingenuous. I think those of you making this claim know deep down that it's not true.

No, Exclusives aren't all that matters. And I never pretend they do, but they are a very important aspect to selling a system, and always have been. They are what can help define the system, and when you have two equal libraries, which will appeal to people equally, it's the exlcusives which help push one to one side or the other.

Sometimes, features can help sway people one way or another, but features are also what gets attention so people may take notice. But I don't think many people buy consoles for features anymore. Or at least, said feature has to be important for the time of the consoles sale. For instance, DVD and BR were important given that they were new technology, and PS2 and PS3 had good versions of that. It was an exciting technology which helped people push them to buy one. But, it wasn't brought because of it being a player(although pS3 had some of that), it was, "Hey, that game system can also play these movie discs". It was a game system first. The features were an added value that pushed people over the edge, or gave added value.

Those extra features aren't as important anymore. UHD being the newest tech this gen, hasn't struck a chord with the consumer like DVD or BR did. Social media features were attractive for Sony at the start of the gen, but it wasn't the biggest reason they sold PS4's. It did help them sell a lot of camera's though, and it's been a popular added feature on the system. But it's still centered around games.

The power aspect can indeed attract some people, but history shows that power isn't what matters. PS1 and PS2 dominated because of the games, but both were not the most powerful console of their gen. But you couldn't ignore their games, which were groundbreaking for their time. In the SNES/Genesis days, the power difference wasn't quite as clear, and both systems did well, because they both had unique games.

Sony started the gen off with a bang, but they kept their momentum because of the games. Sony has barely promoted any of their other features since the 2nd year of PS. Look at Sony's marketing, and outside PSVR, almost every major announcement is about games. They aren't talking about PSNow much. They aren't talking about their social media features. They aren't talking about cross buy, remote play, or share play. They aren't talking about their online service. They're talking about games, and that's what is attracting people, despite MS more powerful console, despite all those features that MS has brought to the market.

That's true. But new generations tend to reset the playing field. If Sony do exactly the same thing as they've been doing and Microsoft and Nintendo improve Sony will definitely lose market share. And reading the tea leaves I think that's a very real possibility. Microsoft have made some pretty significant steps toward improving their platforms and even if they don't match Sony 100% in exclusives they could still match them in sales if they gain advantages in other areas (along with a respectable number of exclusives).

So, I agree that Sony's first place position this generation is all but guaranteed, but they can't rest on their laurels if they want to command the same sort of lead next generation.

Despite the content that may exist, if the article headline seems to be about the article being idiotic, then people are going to jump to the conclusion that it's a pointless article. If we're talking about MS, then nothing MS has is causing them to come close to them being able to take a lead this year. Nothing new is coming as far as we know, and what they had this past year didn't cause them to even start to catch up, and PS still outsold it. MS didn't even reduce the sales gap ratio. As it stands, this year seems like its' pretty much going to play out like last. MS has one big AAA game, and the services they currently offer. Sony has several big AAA games coming. The games may be different, the playbook is the same.

If it's Nintendo the article is talking about, then I'm not sure what Sony can do to adapt to the release paradigm that Nintendo employs with Switch. They're marketed in different ways, and while Switch serves the home console market, it's also a portable, so its selling to two markets...one of which Sony doesn't service with the PS4, so the sales comparisons posited here aren't exactly comparable.

before anyone says that Sony has to adapt to anything, they have to prove that the things the competition is doing is actually causing Sony to fall behind, or going to somehow be detrimental to them in the future. judging by the ps3 the console was supported with games way after wii and 360 stopped. ps4 will continue giving out new games exclusive games again way after the switch and xbox one. people buy consoles to play great games outside of n4g rubbish you get on here no one cares what you say. people want great games and sony delivers. no matter how much you bicker you wont be able to change that by typing messeges on the internet

I would keep quiet for this year to grab as much sales out of PS4, and announce ps5 next year. Launch at the end of 2020. By that time make PSN name change, cross buy and cross gen bc, OS on dedicated flash ram. Lower price of PS4 to 199$

The only time Sony falters is when they get possessed by hubris, As we have seen with the release of the PS3. and even then, they still followed the same winning strategy of providing a lot of exclusive experiences and eventually recovered.
The game is a little different now, With the near collapse of Sony's other divisions and the main thing keeping them together as a company was the PlayStation gaming division, I feel they want to keep the momentum going from the PS4 right into the next gen. You can see it with the cancelling of their presence at E3 and not holding a PlayStation Experience, It has been reported that this is because of a lack of salient announcements But, I think that is is also Preparing for an end of year reveal of the PS5.
The lack of announcements is telling as well, that generally means that most of the new content being developed is most likely next generation(or had been pushed to the next gen), which bodes well for PlayStation fans, Present and future. Looks like Sony is going to be very prepared and have a lot to talk about when the reveal most likely happens toward the end of this year. You can see Ms reacting to this by it's recent purchases of some development houses for it's preparation of it's next console to compete properly this next gen with Playstation. Competition...you gotta love it.

Playstation will keep on innovating like they always do. Ps5 will keep on that legacy.
Xbox has a lot to prove next Gen to convince me to buy one,
and paying Forbes, Gaming Bolt and all this sellout websites just to try to create false narratives is not the way to do it.
People complain Sony is quiet at the moment. Why? Because they are busy on delivering on their promess. And that is great games.
