Excerpted from the review of the game:
Starting off the game, after you've selected a character, you're treated to a long jeep ride throughout some African terrain to some hotel, which is relatively pointless. Sure you get tiny nuggets of information that help with the story and attempts at suspense, but those could have been done in a two minuted conversation rather than a ten minute drawn out playable cutscene (playable as in turning your head). You get malaria before making it to the hotel and wake up to find someone rifling through your belongings. He threatens you, you fall asleep, and then you wake up to an explosion.
This point, about twenty minutes into this shooter, is the first time you can actually move around and wield a weapon. You have to escape this gunfight, but after you die, someone rescues you and you have to work for him. That's the major premise of the story: you have to work for people for diamonds. And you have to find some guy named "Jackal".
The story really isn't anything worth mentioning: it isn't terrible, but it is far from good. But games have made up for bad stories in the past with fun gameplay (Mercenaries 2, for example); unfortunately, Far Cry 2's gameplay just doesn't do that for me. Now remember, I've only played about five or six hours of the game, but I think those hours are fairly representative of the gameplay as a whole. The gameplay was bland - there's no other word for it. The controls were good, but not as tight as I would have liked. The guns were fairly generic and the vehicles were also pretty vanilla.
But even with all of its faults, Far Cry 2 has one huge thing going for it: the game is freaking beautiful, particularly the water areas. At one point, I was riding a boat down a stream and I couldn't tell whether it was actual footage of a safari or inside the game (till someone started shooting me). Also, the game has fairly realistic physics: smaller trees will fall down when hacked or shot and fire will realistically spread through grassland.
If you’re new to this long-running franchise, we’ve got you covered.
2 and 3, pretty much the only ones i really enjoyed. 1 was amazing for the time but aged quite poorly. 4 has the elephant gun, all i can praise from any entry after 3 lol
Ummmm 3 than stop.
Okay maybe two as well. But yeah probably 3 and then move on.
Far Cry 2. People constantly rant about games now being too easy, holding your hand, having too many unnecessary RPG-lite leveling features, etc. People specifically complain about open world games being too focused on tons of collectibles and "checkmarks" that just waste time.
Far Cry 2 is an answer to all of those complaints. It was made by Ubisoft before they fell into all the traps discussed above (and before they started inserting towers into their games to defog the map). It has respawning enemies, weapons that degrade, and the collectible diamonds are very useful in the game (which you find in a similar way to the way you find shrines in BOTW with a radar system). The map you have is an in game item you pull out while playing, not a pause menu that is unnecessarily detailed. Also the enemy AI and physics are much better than later entries in the series.
It has a mixed reputation because people at the time said it was too hard, the weapon degradation was annoying, and then respawning enemies were annoying. FC2 came out in 2008, so this was before games like Dark Souls and BOTW had come out and made it cool to like these types of features.
GF365: "There are some games with extraordinary visuals that impress us to this day. Here are old games with outstanding graphics."
I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.
Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.
It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good
The Far Cry series’ best game – not Far Cry 6 – just got more brutal and realistic thanks a mod than revamps and remakes the classic Ubisoft open-world FPS
Far Cry 2 where your guns never ever jammed until you got into a gunfight is their best? I disagree.
Far Cry 2 may certainly not be the most "fun" game in the series but from a narrative standpoint it definitely is the most interesting of the bunch. FC2 couldn't be further away from the pointless fragfests that the following episodes turned out to be.
I actually agree, the game isn't all that great and glad im only renting it.
So far i would say a 6/7 out of 10 would be better
its a great game,i'm addicted to it....the thing is,you have to play more than 2 hours to really appreciate it! thats when it gets interesting! and the graphics are just amazing...
Yep I like it to! I think some people may go into this expecting a typical FPS but its not! there is times where there is no action and there is alot of travelling from one place to another. I dont think this game will appeal to everyone which this reviewer proves but if you like massive open games where you can plan an attack and use some tatical fighting then im sure you will like this game!
You just cant win....you have a game like Far Cry 2 with gorgeous graphics, decent multiplayer ( loving the maps ) and a different approach to the more recent fps with the day/night cycle, open world etc... and people slag it off. When they see R2, K2, cod 4 / 5 they moan that they are too similar and they want something different. Far Cry 2 is class imo.
