Shadow of the Tomb Raider PS4 Pro vs. Xbox One X 4K Visuals Comparison

Shadow of the Tomb Raider offers both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X support. There is no change in the visual modes, both support high resolution and high frame rate mode. The difference is in the performance and overall image quality for the game.

Not so much, many people prefer 60 FPS to higher resolution. Good thing we have options!

DarXyde2418d ago

I'd rather have frame rate myself, personally.

I don't have any of the enhanced consoles though, so I have no stake in this.

alb18992418d ago

Yep, but they are talking about images not frame rate. There is an option too to play with 60fps so

AnubisG2418d ago

I prefer 4K with 60fps myself.😆

S2Killinit2418d ago

There isnt too much of a difference in resolution either. Neither is actually 4K by the way.

kevnb2418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

@AnubisG I would settle for 1440p 60 fps, I dont have a huge tv anyway. At 50 inches and 8 or so feet away I can notice 1080p vs 1440p, but 4k I have to sit closer.

mkis0072418d ago

Id rather take the gpu power from 4k and get highly enhanced visuals at 1080p. I hope, if they are targeting full 4k next gen, that they have something to mitigate the power drain from just increasing the res.

60fps is up to the dev and has always been. Any game ever made could have run at 60fps if the devs had turned down effects or settings. Devs choose visuals over fps 90% of the time.

kevnb2418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

@mkis007 on console they do, on pc the target is still really 1080p 60 fps for most people/devs. The masses have been somewhat resistant to move on from 1080p, we even see more 1080p 120hz gaming laptops this year. Oh, and I actually saw an hdr 1080p tv yesterday. Right now people wanting 4k content is really a niche market, but atleast there is enough of us to make it a market. Half the people I know dont even know what 4k or hdr is, they stretch older tv shows with no worry about aspect ratio, they watch movies recorded in the theater etc.

XisThatKid2418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

I'd personally rather 60fps than 4k if I had to give one up. but then again I don't have a TV for it. 1080 is just fine in my book for now I'll make the jump soon I think though.
edit
Can we even see the real differences on say a mid grade phone or scenario that's not 4k?

mark_parch2417d ago

I really depends on the game for me. I thought hitman was way better in high frame rate mode but preffered to play rise of the tomb raider in high resolution. It depends how much you're in motion as you only really get the full benefits of high resolution when the screen is perfectly still at 30fps. going off of digital foundry I will most likely play this at 60fps

Too bad Tomb Raider is getting disappointing reviews. Currently a 78 Metacritic.

2418d ago
mkis0072418d ago

A 78 isnt dissapointing. A 68 is dissapointing. A 78 is a slightly above average game.

kookwes2418d ago Show
conanlifts2418d ago

It is 82 on Xbox, the PS4 score is skewed by a random 4 from Telegraph. Also some of the negative comments seem to be that it is "more of the same". For me that is a good thing.

EnsignHiro2418d ago

Thank goodness I dont let reviews on games decide whether I buy a game or not!

NotanotherReboot2418d ago

the game in your profile pic has a 69 Metacritic

carcarias2417d ago (Edited 2417d ago )

Luckily for me, and many others I suspect, most of the really low scoring reviews said that gameplay is good/great but that the main problems are the story and Lara's imperialist ways/selfishness. Others say one of the problems is that it's 'more of the same', which is great considering how much I liked the last two.

Honestly, I really don't care that much about the story, nor do I care if Lara is 'culturally tone deaf', heh.

starchild2417d ago

It has a higher score on PC and Xbox One. And I really don't care about metacritic scores. The average of 40 or so particular reviewers doesn't represent any kind of objective metric that everyone must bow down to.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider received dozens and dozens of 8s, 9s and 10s. Given how much I liked the previous reboots I'm pretty sure I'll tend to agree more with those higher score reviews.

Both not 4k, Eurogamer states X is 2016 and Pro is 1860.

Davidgr22418d ago

Not really... Xbox One X 4K mode (not true 4k at 2016p) has framedrops and lots of screen tearing. Same goes for the 60 fps mode. I don’t blame the console.. I blame developer Eidos Montreal. They didn’t develop the last 2 games..

GameHead852417d ago

If I was playing the game on PS4 (nor am I playing it on Xbox either) I would choose 1080p 60FPS over 4k 30FPS or lower anyday.

gravedigger2417d ago (Edited 2417d ago )

Obviously X1X version isn't 4k native.

Looks like PS4 Pro is more stable 30fps in resolution mode with same 4k assets like X1X version and also with less screen tearing. Digital Foundry barely gave the edge to X1X version in their comparison

ChrisW2417d ago

Ermagerd!!! 4K!!! Arrrrgggghhhh!!!

Did you know that only about 25% of Americans have 4K TVs?

Aenea2417d ago

25%? That's quite a lot actually! You sure it's not lower?

ChrisW2417d ago

The only verifiable number that I could find was 19% from early 2017. So I bumped the number up a bit.

Still 1 in 4 is not very much for something that's purportedly so spectacular...

So minimal diff and one console cheaper with a ton of high triple a amaing exclusives and 1 with well 3rd party looking tad better

neutralgamer19922418d ago

Busy rather have more games and ps4 is king in that

AspiringProGenji2418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

Exactly! The X was very overhyped. A slight sharper image quality does not beat having amazing games

DarXyde2418d ago

I think you're looking at the isolated incidents and running with them as the standard. The gap between One X and Pro is wider than the gap between PS4 and Xbox One. Let's not mince words here.

For a good amount of multiplatform games, One X has a pretty pronounced advantage. In terms of first party titles, keep in mind that wizards work at Sony's studios which is why God of War, in my opinion, is uncontested. It's a legitimately ridiculously great looking game on Pro and I've yet to see anything like it on X. Doesn't mean that it can't happen though.

Most games however are multiplatform and they do look/ run better on X, oftentimes more than a little.

To say X was overhyped and writing off the image quality as slightly sharper is a bit disingenuous.

IamTylerDurden12418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

I think owning a PS4 is necessary at this point. God of War and Spider-man just recently released, how could you miss that? PS4 also gives you the option for VR. Not everyone can afford all console, so if you must choose, i'd go with a PS4 Pro. The best console on the market.

AspiringProGenji2418d ago

Every graphics comparison I see is just a sharper image quality and that’s it. The gap between the X and pro is bigger sure, but with such gap you would think the graphics discrepancy would be much bigger, hence why the 6tf thing was just hype. The X is being held back by the Xone and devs not wanting to push further to not alienate anyone. All that power is just to give a res bump. You will still be playing games at the same FPS as the pro 🤷🏻‍♂️

DarXyde2418d ago

AspiringProGenji,

Wait.... so you have not seen both running on a 4K TV with your own eyes?

If you rely on watching the things on your computer that isn't 4K or YouTube, you're definitely not going to see the difference the way it really is shown. Both look really great when seen personally, but the differences are also more pronounced.

I don't disagree with your assessment of frame rate, but aside from Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, Shadow of Mordor, and MGSV: GZ, frame rate has never been a distinct advantage for anyone.

mkis0072418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

Daxyde.

From the perspective of an all platform gamer, ( x1x, pro, switch, vita, 2ds, and gaming pc)xbox 1x differences vs ps4pro is very slight when compared to most pc versions.

Almost every comparison I see shows a zoomed image trying to show the increased res on x vs pro. 4k is expensive. I Play on a 55 oled and the X does not live up to the hype or promise of that 6tflop shouting.

kevnb2418d ago

Its just the microsoft pr machine really, the x and even the pro are fairly niche products compared to the regular models.

Eonjay2418d ago

Yes I feel like the difference would need to be way higher in order to give purchase a machine just for the purpose a slight visual boost.

shiva12418d ago

So if one has both pro and x which platform should the person buy this game for as it is the same cost on both?

CarlDechance2418d ago

"So if one has both pro and x which platform should the person buy this game for as it is the same cost on both? "

The one that goes on sale first.

2418d ago
Eonjay2418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

I wouldn't buy both unless the X had some exclusives I wanted to play. If that was the case I would single player multiplat game on the X and multiplayer games on the Pro (since I already have friends and pay for Plus on PS). Without games specific to the X that I wanted to play its just a waste of money when the difference isn't worth another 500 investment.

kevnb2418d ago

It really is hard to justify the x for a ps4 owner, even if you only have an og ps4 game library is the most important part.

Yep but it is a magnificent choice for people like me that have both consoles. Multiplatform are a sure Xbox buy for better performance. Is good to have choice.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ2418d ago

Lol you guys are so defensive. I have a Pro and an X and my X is more than a "Tad better" looking. I did buy my Pro strictly for Exclusives

Donnie812418d ago

Tad...... Keep telling yourself that

starchild2417d ago

Well, these are the same people that will claim PC versions are only slightly better. Just a bunch of childish, defensive fanboys. Instead of acknowledging that each platform has different strengths and weaknesseses they feel the need to make it seem like their console is the best at basically everything, and anything other platforms do better is just "negligible" or "slight" and therefore doesn't really matter.

notachance2417d ago

give 'em a break bro, while we're busy with Yakuza Kiwami 2, DQ XI, Spiderman, and now this, SoTR is their one new high profile game since.. uhh.. State of Decay 2?

PS4 Pro fps mode is better since it doesn't have screen tearing like the Xbox One X version and is only a few fps less. Screen tearing is worse.

Elda2418d ago

Buying for the Pro along with other 1st,2nd & third party exclusives.

KickSpinFilter2418d ago (Edited 2418d ago )

I would also if I had time, but Spider-man and Firewall Zero keeping me busy.

Elda2418d ago

is it hard to just say which one looks better, but we have to add games too, lol

New Proton Experimental Update Fixes Low FPS For Final Fantasy 16 and More

Proton Experimental got a new update yesterday that improves Final Fantasy 16, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and more.

So much hassle people had for FF16 performance on PS5 to hit PC and still be barely playable. FF16 is hitting the crysis “can it run it” for PCs.

And now I’m genuinely wondering is it because the devs failed to properly design the game or is it because it is over ambitious.

Hofstaderman197d ago (Edited 197d ago )

Too many variances in the PC ecosystem. They can attempt to optimize to a point but ultimately, as it is in most cases, individuals will have to tweak settings to get their rig to run the game at its subjective best. Me personally, I enjoy a no fuss console experience but must admit I'm getting into the simplistic steam deck tweaks.

Michiel1989197d ago

that's just nonsense, square is just bad at ports and have been for years. Japanese ports were notorious for it a good while, but it has gotten better but still nothing to write home about. Take FF7R pt1 for example, at launch on pc there were frequent random fps drops for no reason and a guy, a single guy got a patch out within 2 days that fixed it, if that doesn't say enough about their incompetency with pc ports then idk.

DustMan197d ago

I don't know how people are getting such poor performance. It ran well for me +60fps at 1440p dlss balanced, all high settings. I'm on a i7-8700, 32gb ram, and 3080, so a pretty old setup. I get very few stutters, and it's buttery smooth if i cut the shadows down to medium settings. cut scenes have been modded to run at 60fps.

It's sitting at "mostly positive reviews' on steam. With most of the complaints coming from those with said poor performance. By absolutely no means is this a perfect / great port, but it's not god awful. Seems like it's a hardware issue on the customers end, and issues with the port itself.

Inverno197d ago

This is talking about proton tho. It's expected for games to run poorly because they aren't natively running on Linux. I will agree however that Square has a history of putting out horribly running games on PC.

Hofstaderman197d ago

The game was optimized specifically for the PS5 and even so it makes that console creak....wonder how the Pro will handle it....

883197d ago

Hoping very much that it gets some "Pro Enhanced" attention.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider turns six years old and remains an underrated treasure

TricksterArrow220d ago (Edited 220d ago )

Yeah. The "open hub" model with "quest givers" really did not work at all for me.

Gamehard220d ago

Agree. To me, it was the weakest of the reboot trilogy.

CrimsonWing69220d ago

I literally came in here to say this. It started off so good, too. Once you hit Peru or wherever, you smash into a brick wall with the pacing. Honestly, the first entry in the reboot was the best one of this trilogy. Also, I’ll never understand why they let you dual wield her classic pistols in the first reboot at the very end and then in the sequels they never gave you that again.

isarai220d ago

Even more insulting. They let you buy one of the two pistols in Shadow of the tomb raider but never the second one

SeTTriP219d ago

Or her command prompt acrobatics.

Lexreborn2220d ago

The first was cool, it had its flaws but it wasn’t a bad starter. The second was supposed to be something special and just did not live up to the promises. The 3rd I can’t even finish it’s just not fun and narratively still a huge issue for the character.

Laura is written so contradictory, trinity supposedly is so bad but her body count on innocence and villains alike is alarming.

MeatyUrologist220d ago

It had its high points. Visuals are still some of the best I have ever seen. The areas were also gorgeous and fun to explore and the puzzles were actually good. That being siad the combat felt terrible, the hub area of paititi was boring, and nearly every aspect of the game felt a step backward from Rise. I still love the series and really forward to the next entry but hoping they make it mode similar to rise or even the original reboot.

MasterChief3624220d ago

I adored Rise of the Tomb Raider, but for some reason I had a harder time getting into Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Ravenkiss220d ago

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a huge letdown compared to the series Reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider...

mastershredder220d ago

You mean the game where they took out all the cool weapons? The locations were okay, a bit unoriginal and too much like the first Uncharted. 1 and 2 rocked. This one tried.

Amazon Prime members can get over 40 Steam Deck-compatible games for free right now

42 Steam Deck-compatible games that you can get for free right now, but you'll need an active Amazon Prime subscription for most of them.

Inverno220d ago

I've noticed when I was still paying for Prime that those supposed free games they give through Epic are just free games epic gives without the need of Prime. Rugrats is in the list in the article and it's available to get without Prime so that's pretty shady on Amazon's part, or maybe it's Epic being scummy.

TheNamelessOne220d ago

Tales from the Borderlands (the original, good one), Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Borderlands the pre-sequel, Borderlands 2, Loop Hero, Trek to Yomi, Greedfall, Shadow of Mordor, Hard West 2, Figment 2. Some great gets there.

__y2jb219d ago

Amazon never give steam codes away so the steam deck link here is silly unless you are modding and installing epic launcher.

Kyizen219d ago

Yeah I get a ton of free games on epic, It works but having to launch the Epic browser and games though it is pain vs just using the Steam deck OS. Once the game is running no issue though,

FinalFantasyFanatic219d ago

They give away quite a few GOG versions of games though, I suppose you can just slap those onto your Steam Deck (I've done this), although it's not always ideal.

__y2jb218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

You can but it’s a pain to launch them and doesn’t it require installing windows?

FinalFantasyFanatic217d ago

You don't need windows, personally, I just download it on PC, then transfer it to the Steamdeck via network sharing or USB stick. Then you add it to the Steamdeck as a "non-steam game" like you would if you were using a PC. The only downside is if you play the game on both PC and Steamdeck, you'll have to manually transfer save files.

Supposedly you can use Hero launcher or something, but I can't seem to get the games to work after download it via GOG on Steamdeck. So manually transfer it is for me.
