E3 2018: Opinion: Gears 5's Tone Reminds Us of God of War in a Great Way

Yeah they need to make the colors gritty again like in Gears 1 & 2, the bright colors in 3 & 4 made the series lose its brutal atmosphere.

Epic's artistic vision was sacrificed because a vocal minority of people/critics bitched so much about Gears not having enough color. Gears 4 was quite beautiful but the original vibe has definitely been lost.

Gears tone actually set a big tone for the entire generation. So many games were criticized as having that drag brown or gray tone. A lot of the similarities was due to the popularity of UE3, and so many devs not really experimenting enough with what it was capable of.

In any case, nowadays, it seems contrast and brightness somehow seems more modern than what we had last gen. But the reality is is that artistic vision shouldn't ever be constrained with trying to appear progressive.

I don’t see this comparison at all. If anything that trailer seemed to be getting away from the original topic like Fast and the furious. Back when the badass Phoenix and his boys were running stuff it was all about ending the damn enemy threat for good and f&@$ anything that got in the way. Now it seems like that shit is secondary. I want to find out about “B” or I’m so sad about “A” and btw, there might be some enemies along the way. Maybe we can avoid them.Kill the whole damn new crew and make papa bear the focus and end this shit for good out of revenge.... again.

They're trying to shoehorn drama into a game when they're clearly horrible story tellers. The characters are flat and empty but the world is gorgeous and the gameplay is dope, so maybe focus on what's good about the series and let actual story tellers tell the stories. I'm mean, come on, that was some highschool level acting and writing. Making one of your characters cry is not how you build drama, it's how you look corny. They don't know who their characters really are and they don't know what people are looking for when they ask for story driven games. So, "make the girl cry" is their best solution.

While I understand what you're saying, one thing I found with GeOW was that the story was always kind of shallow. Same with GOW. The character development is where the meat of a story is. It's where you connect with characters, and care about them and their reasons for doing things.

Not that I was all that impressed with the trailer and the story/characters they were trying to show. But I feel that kind of stuff is a good step. Ultimately though, it all depends on how it comes together, and a short trailer isn't usually indicative of the final product.

The only thing Gears of War has that’s similar to God of War is the name.

Nothing from the trailer made it seem like the gameplay has changed at all. Apart from there being more color the two games aren't alike.
