A week with the Xbox One X: How it compares to a living room PC

Microsoft's latest console makes for a much better HDR Blu-Ray player than your PC. What else is there to like about it?

Razzer2399d ago

“Rachel: This is tough. Honestly I think I'd pick PlayStation, purely on a software basis. Its exclusives just excite me more—The Last Of Us Part II, anything Uncharted, even Hideo Kojima's upcoming madness, Death Stranding. I already have a kickass PC—infused with drops of your actual blood, Wes—and I know that any big Microsoft games will make their way to Windows eventually. Naughty Dog games? I can only get those on PS4.”

Yep

If you already got a PS4 then it's time to get an xbo. Get the best of both worlds. I can't build a PC with 4k uhd player and 6tf gpu so I'd get an X for the low low price of $500. I've been down that road of being a PC gamer. I choose consoles any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Razzer2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

PC and PS4 are the best of both worlds for me. To each their own, but Xbox One is largely redundant for PC gamers.

Ricegum2399d ago

"If you already got a PS4 then it's time to get an xbo."

Why? For prettier graphics? I'm happy with just my PS4 Pro thanks.

bluefox7552398d ago

Like Razzer said, if you're a PC gamer, Xbox is redundant. Why would you buy a console to play games at 30fps when you can already play them at 60+?

FlameBaitGod2398d ago (Edited 2398d ago )

" I've been down that road of being a PC gamer. I choose consoles any day of the week and twice on Sunday."

LOL!!!!!!!!!! I though I was a troll, pretty sure you've never had a gaming PC to begin with. Who would want to play games at true 4k with mod support and be able to use any controller they want ? Someone would have to be borderline retarded IMO.

ProjectVulcan2398d ago (Edited 2398d ago )

PC and PS4 is the best gaming combination. No point getting an Xbox One if you have a decent gaming PC. Most of it's games are on PC. It does a hundred times as much as Xbox One X. Xbox One X is extremely expensive for just basically being a games machine and bluray player, which in the age of streaming media is virtually obsolete. It's not comparable to a PC which will do so many more tasks than Xbox One X, have a much brighter future and a much longer list of backwards compatible titles.

That alone is worth the extra cost of having a gaming PC. You can play thousands of games in 4K, instead of just a hundred on X1X. 12 months ago I was playing Gears of War 4 in 4K. You waited A YEAR FOR THE SAME EXPERIENCE!

Last month I played Ori and the Blind forest in 4K and 60FPS- an Xbox One game with no such 4K patch for console. Then I played Bioshock (2007) in 4K and 60FPS. Then I played Shenmue on a Dreamcast emulator in high resolution. Then I played Zelda Breath of the Wild, all the way through, on a PC.

Can you do this on an X1X? Are you saying the best reasons for it is only that it has like 100 odd games in 4K and a 4K video player for a dead on arrival format?

There is a reason why a PC costing more is actually better value.

rainslacker2398d ago

Would really depend on one's gaming habits. Id say what you say is true if one is hell bent on best graphics for third party, in which case, have fun. I'd say though that if that isn't the case, and one can't find enough on Xbox to excite them in the exclusives front, they'd probably be better off just to keep on buying games on PS4, and use the money they'd spend on another console, on just buying some more games.

Barring one needing the "most powerful console" for some reason, which again, I won't judge, if one hasn't seen the point in buying a X1 to date, they're probably not going to suddenly find it now just because MS is releasing new hardware. It's not like there are any new games that weren't available before.

kevnb2396d ago

you cant really compare the one x to a pc, but its a nice high end option for xbox gamers.

Isn't PSnow supposed to put Sony exclusives on PC?

Razzer2399d ago

steaming is a piss-poor substitute for any kind of gaming, even the older PS games that PSNow provides.

FreddyFazbear2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

Does 100% of all PS exclusives available on PSNow?? Of course they will only put select exclusives on now since hardware is what makes up their profit not streaming which is just a small option. Still, there are very few who uses psnow, axtually i dont know any friends who uses it. majority of the world is not yet on fiber internet you know. So people like me still prefer console with physical copies even if i have a 50mbps fiber internet.

bluefox7552398d ago

Streaming is by far the worst way to play a game. You're not really experiencing a game if you're streaming it.

badz1492398d ago

how is the quality with Steam Link though? I'm interested to get 1 but have never seen 1 on my own

If we really wanna go with exclusives though I would get a Switch console and then go with gaming PC to play all the Xbox games and pc ganda

DrumBeat2399d ago

If you're consciously willing to miss out on PlayStation exclusives, there's something wrong with you. There's so much quality there, it's unreal. More than Nintendo (though Sony's games may not always score as high) and more than Microsoft for sure.

How you can game and deprive yourself of such quality is beyond me.

Deep-throat2398d ago

MS are unifying their ecosystem. It's the future.

badz1492398d ago

future for MS maybe but Sony and Nintendo aren't gonna do THAT anytime soon

Unspoken2398d ago

But those exclusives don't excite me in the least.

Wotbot2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

We all know your gaming PC will never be fully optimised and not worth the money you paid for it.

A $500 optimised console will have similar results as a high end gaming PC because the PC will not be fully optimised, the one X and Pro are more than just their component parts.

GameBoyColor2399d ago

Well My pc can always handle 1080p 144fps on every game and only costed me about 1k. Something consoles just can't do(and probably won't be able to for at least 2 more gens). That's for almost every game out there, though the occasional shoddy port will get no money from me and quickly learn that pc players don't put up with that bs.

FreddyFazbear2399d ago

Wheres your proof?? are you a dev?? Im a PS fan but I dare not say the PS4 pro or PS4 has multiplat games more optimized than a PC. excuses... -_-

EddieT2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

Currently playing Wolfenstein II at 1440p locked at 100fps completely maxed out. If that's what "never fully optimized" looks like, I'm cool with that.

Longshot8102399d ago

You can slowly but surely upgrade your pc to play newer titles as demand grows. You cannot do that with a console. The payoff at the end is much better with a pc.

bluefox7552398d ago

Not true at all. A $500 PC will achieve 1080p/60+ FAR more often than a console will. The real handicap of consoles is performance. It works for consoles, because most console gamers don't really seem to care about frame rate, but I think if you're serious about gaming, you'll never willingly choose 30fps.

yarbie10002398d ago

my gaming pc has already paid for itself and made me money. you can have your pc mine cryptocurrencies while your not using it

badz1492398d ago

"A $500 optimised console will have similar results as a high end gaming PC because the PC will not be fully optimised,..."

how can you call 30fps vs 60+fps as "similar"? Shadow of War has proven that even with all those upgrades, it will still run at 30fps on the X, same as the base PS4 and Xbone and Pro. resolutions doesn't matter according to Xboners, remember?

ProjectVulcan2398d ago

A $500 console will be outdated and obsolete within 2-3 years at the rate new consoles are now getting released. The entire machine will be binnable in terms of having the best multiplats. At least with the right PC platform you can upgrade increments like the GPU. In a year you'll swap in a new GPU twice as fast as Xbox One X and again you'll be there smug as it destroys X1X on 4K games.

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 2398d ago
FreddyFazbear2399d ago

So an expensive powerful PC is not optimized enough unlike an xbone x which is very optimized for the price of $500. Hmm yep keep shooting all those excuses to make the xbone x relevant. Games are made on PCs duh??

Prince_TFK2399d ago

Umm maybe you haven't played games like Watch Dogs 2, AC Unity, and Batman Arkham City on PC.

FreddyFazbear2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

Still is that the majority of multiplats that are inferior on PC? you make it sound like every multiplats are inferior on PCs. Those are just a very very very few games compared to thousands that are better on PC and by the way all thoses games you mentioned are all running great now on PC better than consoles due to patches so still PC proves it yet again. Like I said, Excuses!!

Prince_TFK2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

The thing is, just like you said, those games need patch in order to run smoothly. The patch itself could take weeks or months to implement correctly (case in point, Witcher 3) whereas with console, the game works immediately. Even if it needs patch, it still patches that are tailor made for the console.

2399d ago
EddieT2399d ago

You clearly haven't as all of those games run better on PC.

The question between ps4pro and xb1x is easy.

You pick whichever games you want to play most.

That's not the real question though. The real question is....

If you only want a gaming machine, why the heck would you pick a PC over the xb1x.

Razzer2399d ago (Edited 2399d ago )

"If you only want a gaming machine, why the heck would you pick a PC over the xb1x."

That is easy. If you have a PC with a GTX 1060 or higher then you have equal or better hardware than 1X. With a PC, you can tweak the settings to your liking a hell of a lot more than on consoles. Much greater granularity to achieve the optimal level of quality and performance. With PC, you have a larger library of games. Backward compatibility is moot. There are no generations. The deals buying games are incredible also. All the competition between online stores makes for some awesome prices on games. Besides, who doesn't own a PC? The difference between a PC and a gaming PC typically comes down to the GPU. For a $500 upgrade vs a $500 console purchase, you are getting a better performing gaming machine than the Xbox One X.

I'm not saying PC gaming is for everyone. But there are plenty of reasons to pick PC over any console, including 1X.

zb1ftw7772398d ago

Never in a million years is the PC better optimised than any console.

Never in a million years can you get 4k 30fps HDR gaming on a PC that costs $500.

Backwards compat is also nearly moot on the XBox platform too.

The library of quality games is way higher on the Xbox platform than PC. Steam has some good games, the rest are complete garbage. The orig xbox plus 360 plus xb1 has far better games than the PC library.

At least list some valid reasons. Yours was pitiful.

Razzer2398d ago

They are valid reasons. You are not interested in valid reasons. You can’t see past Xbox. Your loss.

Oh....you do realize saying “never in million years” when it comes to gaming tech is about the stupidest thing you could possibly say, right?

I can give you lots of reasons. I'll list them:
Free online.
WAAAAAY more games (including actual exclusives and all of Xbox's "exclusives".
More power.
Better graphics.
More flexibility.
Upgradability.
Mods.
You can play at whatever framerate you want, as opposed to being limited to 30 for most games, like xb1x.
Steam.
Customizable graphics.
Far more open platform.
Cheaper games.
Gsync (it's better than freesync).
Custom resolutions.
Largest install base of any gaming platform.
More VR options.
More control options.

To name a few.

GameBoyColor2398d ago

freesync is more affordable gg

ProjectVulcan2398d ago

Emulation. Try and play Zelda on your Xbox One X. You can on a gaming PC.....

Longshot8102399d ago

This is a pretty cringy title. You can't compare an xbox one x to a pc.

bluefox7552398d ago

That would seem logical, but a lot of people are doing just that. I hear people saying all the time that x1x performs as well as a $1200 PC. It's a fine piece of hardware, but that is just nonsense, lol.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21838h ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan6h ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga5h ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--7h ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC7h ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop3h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

PlayStation VR2 Official PC Adapter by Sony Is Being Certified

An official PlayStation VR2 adapter for PC made by Sony is being certified. It won't be long before the VR headset is officially compatible.

one step closer to unlocking the headsets full power.

I'm extremely underwhelmed with how Sony has treated it's psvr2 customers seriously Nintendo treated it's Wii U owners of which the sales were probably equal in the headsets 2bd year v the consoles far better.

This is the least they could do

ravens5222h ago

I agree. I'm a day 1 consumer too. 😢 For my day 1 Vita. I do not like when Sony does that crap.

DarXyde5h ago

I still don't have PSVR2, but this was always my concern. I almost pulled the trigger for RE4, but I waited it out to see what changed. As it happens, not much.

I love my Vita. Great piece of hardware. It didn't shine the way we know it could have, but it'll still got amazing titles.

PC support is very much a step in the right direction. Even if some PC only titles can make use of the headset, it does increase PSVR adoption: it's a great piece of hardware and it's also the best in its price bracket, so I see a way forward for uptake. Who knows? Maybe that'll allow VR devs to feel more comfortable releasing on PS5.

BlackOni20h ago

Agreed, but to your point, those dollars went a lot further back then than they do now. This should have been a consideration from the beginning.

Imagine buying a monitor or tv that could only work with one device. That's basically what this equates to, so they left a LOT of money on the table by not making it PC compatible from the getgo. But to Sony's credit, even they were unaware of how popular their games would be once released on PC.

poppatron6h ago

No credit to Sony on this one I’m afraid, first party and generally Sony support for psvr2 really hasn’t been great

Babadook717h ago

I doubt there will be foveated rendering implemented on PC. PSVR2 is already a better experience than PCVR. PS5 Pro will unlock the full power.

so now Sony is going to sell me an adapter I have to buy so I can use the headset on my PC? Gee, how generous of you :P

While it's great that I will be able to use this headset instead of my Index or Q3 for PC only VR titles, it's still a sad realization that Sony is sorta waiving the white flag here. Here's hoping they at least make some of their PSVR2 exclusive content available on PC as well now.

ocelot0722h ago

I don't see it as waving the white flag. PSVR the first one even though modders did get it working on pc it was a awful experience.

PSVR2 one of the best VR headsets available. Requires just one usb c cable. Even though I truly believe exclusives are what sell consoles. When it comes to VR it's very nich among gamers. I'm ecstatic that soon I can imo use the best VR headset on both ps5 and pc. No need for a pc vr headset. I have said it since PSVR2 was announced that I hope they make it pc compatible. With it being a very expensive headset and pc vr being more popular it just makes sense for Sony to do this.

22h ago
Neonridr21h ago

as opposed to a Quest 3 that requires no cables, or a single cable if you want to pair it with your PC right? ;)

While the tech is better in the PSVR2 for the most part (I own an Index, Q3 and PSVR2), I'm still let down by certain things. Headset rumble is a novelty. Eye tracking has only been used well on a couple of titles.

to each their own I guess, but to me this doesn't give me confidence that Sony is fully investing in their own hardware, more like they are stepping back to allow others to fill in the gaps.

ocelot0717h ago

@Neonridr not owned a quest 3. Did own a quest 1 and 2 both where fairly good. Have used a quest 3 for a limited time and thought it was fine. But comfort wise not as nice as psvr2.

Tried using quest 2 via wireless streaming to my pc and it was so bad I much rather using a single cable and have a solid connection than streaming the game from pc to headset.

22h agoReplies(2)
ocelot0722h ago

It's most likely just going to be a usb c to usb 3 adapter. Even for modern era a lot of new cases and motherboards don't have a usb c ports.

The budget but still fairly fairly high end pc I recently helped my friend build. He went with a b550 motherboard. Didn't have a usb c port or a on board socket to connect a pc case with a front panel usb c. Had to get a cheap pcie usb c.

1nsomniac19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

They developed the headset/attached usb c cable so that it wasn’t possible to run through any port other than a designated ps5 port. The adapter allows all the data to be passed correctly to a none designated ps5 port.
