Project Cars 2 review: Can Slightly Mad Studios hope to take on Forza? | Windows Central

Project Cars 2, Slightly Mad Studios' racing sim, is much improved over the first game, with better graphics and handling, double the cars, and more tracks than any other racing game. But can it stack up to the Forza series in actual quality?

That's going to be an interesting comparison. Through in GT for good measure

freshslicepizza2775d ago

GT will likely get more sales but its selling power has more to do with that brand than how much better Polyphony Digital has evolved over the years. Project Cars 2 so far is getting 8 and 9's across the board. I am waiting to see how Forza 7 turns out along with the upcoming demo they are going to rel;ease before I commit. I already have Project Cars 2 on pre-order.

@moldybread

GT5 & GT6 weren't much of an upgrade from one another but playing GT4 and going to GT6 you'll see the significant upgrade. GT6 was more like how expansions worked back in the day. I expect GT Sport to get 8s/9s but then again you have those who will hurt the game based on the delay so it will probably get 7s/8s because of the delay. With the career being a tutorial basically, and the main action is based on online racing against people, I can see GT sliding into the 7s-7.5s because of all of the factors, does that make the game that? no. I personally think the game is around an 8.5/9 after playing the beta, because of the attention to detail to car specific things, and the precise tuning of the physics to feel just like real world racing cars. It it's a beauty especially when you have a steering wheel like myself.

Project Cars 2 in terms of content I believe may have more options on the racing aspect of the game, but that's about it, the AI on that game are rail racers, meaning when you set them to a certain difficulty they will run that same driving line over and over to the T, if you set the AI to race a race and put them on the hardest difficulty and let them run 10 laps and then look at the lap times, they are within 1 second of another. That's really ridiculous, like Need for speed underground ridiculous lOl... There's plenty of elements in PC2 that are overlooked, when it comes to AI and Physics. So I wonder what will go overlooked regarding GTS, if anything would.

@CHEF,

It's funny you mention poor A.I. That is what GT has been guilty of before and I owned GT5 and the cars would also follow the same lines. We need big advancae in A.I. all around. The trouble with the GT franchise is they have too much freedom and waste a lot of time. They spend countless hours on photo mode and replay mode yet can't even get that many cars in the game or tracks after all these years? The campaign is also taking a serious hit? What do these guys do, just drive cars and not get in the studio? They said when the PS4 came out they wouldn't take long because the PS3 was such a struggle to work on. Now here we are, same old thing.

They do however have the best lighting. The physics and handling are alwys good but guess what? So many other racing games are out there now. On the PC you have serious sim games out there but GT continues to sell based a lot on its name. I expect no different with GT Sport. Over 60 million PS4 systems and Project Cars will pale in sales compared to it. Reviews will likely be good but they won't be lenient on Polyphony Digital and why should they? Reviewers are not fanboys who feel complled to score games higher because they are exclusive or because the IP sells a lot.

When GT came out there wasn't much else out there that could compete. Now there is a lot more competition and the review scores reflect that which shows why GT3 was really the pinnacle time for the franchise.

@Moldybread

"Reviewers are not fanboys who feel complled to score games higher because they are exclusive or because the IP sells a lot"

This isn't accurate plenty of fanboyism and or paid reviews in the industry ahahaha,

However, the others is somewhat true, GTS is using brand new everything the reason why Forza has that huge car list and GT6 did is because it used OLD assets, everyone is complaining about GTS car list when Project cars has less cars than it?? it's been out for 2 years now... GTS has also made 8k assets not 4k assets for the game that is downsampled to 4k. There's been alot of ground work done on GTS apart from GT6 so that's why this is a bit more "bare bones" when it comes to the overall package, also the license with FIAA could have a huge affect on the game because we don't know what is required for them to have secured such a partnership or how much work went into making the game meet the requirements in general i believe that took maybe 60% of the time away from actually creating something great, because when you are dealing with government/official practices of organizations they try to make sure everything is done to the T even-though their organization doesn't follow every set of rules, there's alot more to GTS development than you think alot of red tape they had to cut through.

However, I never said GT AI wasn't bad, just said how it's been overlooked in PC2 so I wonder what will be overlooked in GTS. The game that had the best racing AI to me was this game called Juiced on PS2, the AI really would overcook their turns and spin out, didn't follow the driving lines, and as the game went on the better the AI the better the driving, you could frustrate them by tailgating them causing them to get nervous spin out/ make wide turns, slow down alot on a turn where you can overturn, it had great concepts. But hey PS2 had the best games to this day so i'm not surprised.

WindowsCentral* - Not sure why you'd expect them to throw in a PlayStation game.

OT: Well, PC1 was a fun game, but launched just before Forza 6 Apex, and for me, the latter was a much better game. I'm getting both again, so we'll see if PC2 makes a point, this time.

Motorstorm, Wipeout, Forza, GT, Mario Kart... all of them are near and dear to me. I'd add some Sega Arcade ones as honorable mentions. Outrun, Super GT and of course DAYTONAAAAAAAAAAAA

isarai2033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

ROlling STAAAAAAAAAART!

Lack of daytona makes this list fail.

Gaming1012032d ago (Edited 2032d ago )

Honestly, a hidden gem just released - Wreckfest!
It's the most fun you can have with your pants on!
I can't sing this masterpiece's praises enough. I've had more fun with it than any other racing game I can remember, and I've played them all.
We need to support smaller developers like this. The game has been in alpha stages for years so it's unbelievably polished, and it gets regular patches. I still haven't encountered any serious glitches.

My Personal list in order
1.Burnout Revenge(Xbox360)
2. Forza Horizon 4(X1)
3. Forza Horizon 3(X1)
4. Need for Speed hot Pursuit2 (PS2)
5. CruisnWorld(N64)
6. Project Gotham Racing 3(Xbox360)
7. RalliSport Challenge 2(Xbox360)
8. Crusin USA(N64)
9. Rage Racer(PSX)
10. Dirt 2(Xbox360)
Special shout out to Need for Speed the Run, I still play that now and then love the cannonball style of racing but it had faults like real time button mashing in the story outside of the car and it was way too short.

I enjoyed the early Gran Turismo games but I decided to leave off Sim racing from my list since I have been really turned off when you buy a game and know every corner of a track before your first race.
Also left out racing with weapons games. I did love Blur.

Gaming4Life19812033d ago

Need for speed underground was my favorite need for speed, the one that was a launch title on 360. I loved the game and the gameplay, soundtrack, customization were all great but nice list. I never got the hype for the burnout series but I know alot of people love it.

wiz71912032d ago

That was the peak of Need For Speed im my opinion

darthv722033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

I find it funny that NFS HP2 on the PS2 is better than the xbox version. That is a rarity for an inferior system to have the superior version. Good choice though, its fun AF.

I'd pick PGR4 over 3 though because of bikes. But that's me.

xRacer74x2033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

Diff team made the xbox version. Yea it was bad in comparison. I went with 3 cause I played it more than 4 though if I remember correctly 4 was like a remastered version of 3 with more stuff.

poleerollee2032d ago

no Daytona? no Sega Rally? no crazy Taxi?

Gaming4Life19812032d ago

Completely forgot about Daytona USA, I used to play that all the time.

2pacalypsenow2033d ago

How is GT3 not in that list lol

2033d ago Replies(2)
sampsonon2033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

bull. shouldn't it be separated into different categories? arcade games shouldn't be compared to sim games.
what a stupid list

GT Sport is the best competitive racer of them all. yet it's not on this stupid list. lol

2pacalypsenow2033d ago

In terms of fun, GT6 is better than sport.

GT6 has more features.

sampsonon2033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

features? they are totally two different games. one is for couch gaming and the other is a highly competitive online, worldwide racing sim.
like i said they need to make more than one list for racing games.

GT Sport is has the best organized racing and is for the serious racing fan.
everything else can't compare https://youtu.be/erCwEGSw9l...

it's on another level https://youtu.be/erCwEGSw9l...

2pacalypsenow2033d ago

OK but that doesn't translate into being a more fun game..

I tried playing online in sport mode by following the "etiquette". First turn I get slammed and knocked out of the track by the same racer who won the race, where's the fun in that?

Sport is a great Sim, but what made GT great was a combination of both, its still a video game at the end of the day.

IMO GT6 is a better game than Sport, and they even use the same physics engine.

sampsonon2033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

@2pacalypsenow: sorry to hear that you stopped short on a turn and was penalized for it.
but that's my whole point, it's for serious racing. not people that stop short and then blame the game for their lack of racing knowledge.

a little practice and you can learn to avoid penalties like that.
GT 6 was good for its time but is dated and not as good in the physics and online play.

but, you like what you like and play what you play so.
blaming the game for your short comings is always the excuse used for sim racing games.

oh and racing on a track with other great racers is fun. who ever told you it wasn't?

2pacalypsenow2033d ago

@sampsonon

"it's for serious racing. not people that stop short and then blame the game for their lack of racing knowledge."

So me getting slammed by another person going 60mph on a turn and using me as a wall to slow down is my fault?

sampsonon2032d ago (Edited 2032d ago )

@2pacalypsenow that is your side of the story. I'm sure the other person was like " jesus! doesn't guy know how to take turns? stopping f ing short. i hate noobs."

plus you do know they have a drivers rating right? so if you suck at driving you race with other people that suck at it as well. when you race clean your sportsmanship rating goes up and you are matched with other drivers that have the same rating or around the same rating as you. so i just don't get the shit that is coming out of you right now.

learn something https://youtu.be/sI8Ssiltve...
or
go play need for speed or forza and leave sim racing to people that can race or at least strives to race better.

That crap racer that cant save without internet or that the physical edition does not as the full release. LMAO.

NapalmSanctuary2033d ago

Gran Turismo peaked with GT3/4.

LA_Zeo2033d ago

Played that game extensively you’d enjoy Forza 7 just as much

sampsonon2033d ago

MS has a full championship league? cause that's what makes GT Sport special.
does F7 have rewind?

The Best VR Racing Games and Simulators

BY RICK MARSH: Video games are meant to be immersive. They encourage us to act like footballers, spies, assassins, and a wealth of other characters. VR takes this escapism even further, offering a level of realism that offers near-total immersion. As well as providing the opportunity for some of the most entertaining games around, VR also has a host of real-world applications.

One of the best reasons for VR:simulators.

But you would think something as easy as Need for Speed: No Limits VR could be ported to PSVR, Quest, PC VR,etc. to make it even better without the drift. Nope. It's EA. Those lazy bums. No wonder I boycott them.

Jakens2209d ago

It would be great if we get GTR 3 and the newest Assetto to home consoles and with VR support.
