New Nintendo 2DS XL – Renewed Commitment to Heldhelds or Swan Song?

Trevor von Niederhausern of Gamer Professionals writes: "On April 27th Nintendo put out a reveal trailer for a new handheld, the New Nintendo 2DS XL. It seems like a nice system and all, but what I have been wondering is what this means for the 3DS line in general. Is this new 2DS Nintendo showing their commitment to the 3DS? Is this a statement that they will continue with these systems for years to come? Or is the New Nintendo 2DS XL a cheap end of life handheld meant to squeeze out as much money as possible from a dying line?"

I'm not really sold on this. I have both a 3DS and a Switch, so I'm not sure what role it might fill that the others can't.

I have to agree, maybe they just think due to the 2DS success people wanted more options without the 3d feature despite not having a very attractive price tag.

This device maybe a sign Nintendo is heavily pushing the New3DS and it has big hitter exclusives coming out. I think they are not abandoning the 3ds and they are trying to lower new entry level 3ds prices, so people upgrade and the cheap handheld alternative which has shown no signs of slowing down still exists while Switch is the premium device.

Makes little sense to have 3 handhelds competing with each other.

Neonridr2702d ago

cheaper version of a handheld that has all the horsepower and features of a New 3DS minus the 3D aspect. For some, they don't care about that feature. So why not save a good $20-30 off the retail price if they can still get a great little handheld.

Yet Switch and DS will compete with each other as well. Right, make a whole new handheld that omits one feature just to charge $20 less...

Neonridr2702d ago

@IamTylerDurden1 - but the original 2DS was hideous. At least it retains the classic shape and portability.

You will be surprised at how much this thing will sell. Besides, the 3DS has lots of life left in it. Especially in Japan.

there are probably millions that will buy this, especially if they give a good black friday price.

They're better than that whole handhand fad from the late 90's... Talk about redundancy!!! 😁

Bloody Tearful: An ode to DS-era Castlevania Games

Castlevania’s twilight years were some of its best, but they were not enough to avert the dramatic end of the series as we knew and loved it.

Someone should fire to the lowest pit the guy on Konami that thought mobile gaming was the future and destroyed MGS, Castlevania and other franchises in the way.

I think that might have been a group decision, but lol!

Wii U & 3DS eShop are gone. What now? - Opinion Piece

Dan Rizzo says "So this is where we’re at with Nintendo and their continuous colloquy of tedious arguments against emulation. It’s funny how a company that’s so against open-source emulation, uses it to sell commercial products such as the NES and SNES Classic Mini, but release a minimal quantity to drum-up all the hype behind it, only to leave a majority of its fanbase disappointed when struggling to acquire the now collector’s piece."

Jailbreak. It was pretty easy on the 3ds, there are good guides out there.

someone made a good point that older music, movies, and books are far more easier to get access to than games. I think the industry needs to make a change. It's crazy that so much is gone now and I'm willing to pay for the games, but there's literally no way to get them now.

fan_of_gaming527d ago

I can't speak to music as I don't collect it, and books are still quite accessible through paperbacks & hardcover releases. But movies & tv shows are starting to have a problem with accessibility now, with all these streaming-exclusives. Before everything would get a DVD or Blu-ray release, but now if content is pulled from a streamer, like happened with some HBO Max stuff recently, there's often no physical disc option or even a digital download through a service like iTunes. They're just lost media, same as delisted digital-only games.

No surprise, but a sad day for gaming with hundreds of exclusive titles to be lost forever

Petebloodyonion948d ago

it's sad that no one is actually outraged by that piece of news ut it's even worse to Sony because Nintendo acknowledges that going forward they would only release classic content thru the Nintendo online membership.
Basically, they are killing the store to create value for Switch and the Nintendo membership.
