Without a doubt. The physics in this game is where games need to go from here on out. BoTW takes a lot from other games and yet steps the levels up with how the world reacts to your actions and vice versa how you have to react to the world too.

MVGeneral2980d ago

Also frame rate issues and bad graphics especially on the big screen. Not to mention cartoon graphics as a way to make up (or mask) the switches technical inferiority. As if this game was to be made to look like ocarina of time , majoras mask or twilight princess. It would look and perform horrendous.
Because of the technical service back they chose to follow this artistic style.

Thunder_G0d_Bane2979d ago

Clearly you play games for all the wrong reasons.

Gameplay > Graphics. Any and everyday of the week.

I'll take Zelda over The Order 1886 or Ryze Son of Rome any day.

indysurfn2979d ago

This is why I decided to play Horizon Zero dawn first and then play Zelda. Even though Horizon Zero dawn is long I expect it to take me somewhere around FOREVER to finish Zelda.

Okay, I'm in gaming Heaven. Hope Horizon's best graphics ever does not spoil me into only wanting to see a game that looks this good on a HDR tv.

bouzebbal2980d ago

they really spent a lot of time developing this game and implementing some really good stuff like every single zelda before.
It is just a pity they decided to sacrifice what made zelda the legendary series it is and by proceeding in a very repetitive way on the 4 main areas (champion descendant everytime) and the bosses are copy paste of each others..

Summons752980d ago

I wasn't a fan of the Divine Beasts but the story behind the champions was always interesting and the boss fights were fantastic. It's good to shake up the formula every once in a while. It brings new ideas to the table, lets the developer flex their muscles creatively, and gives some fresh air to the series. ATTP really set the foundation for the classic formula and OOT shook up the series by bringing it into the 3D plain. This was both a refreshing shake-up that got away from the need to have a certain weapon to progress and break away from sectioned off areas. I would love to see a lot of these ideas brought back to the classic Zelda formula but go back to being more story focused and having more classic dungeons. This also felt like a big love letter to the original game and a reminder of where the series started. Outside of the interior of the beasts nothing truly feels repetitive. Each shrine has a unique puzzle and travelling the world never gets boring as enemies, weather, time is always going to be different.

My biggest issues are that I wish the story was more put together instead of having to gather memories to get the full story and as I have already stated the interior of the Beast are glorified shrines, I just wish they were more classic Zelda style dungeons. The game is fantastic, though.

bouzebbal2980d ago

"It brings new ideas to the table, lets the developer flex their muscles creatively, and gives some fresh air to the series."

i am the first one who would support this, but by copy pasting the same boss and giving each one of them a different technique isn't flexing creative muscle in my world.
the dungeons felt secondary to me and without interest. before i was so happy to get to one of these.
I remember Mojo Tree on N64 the feeling still haunts me til this day!!

"ATTP really set the foundation for the classic formula and OOT shook up the series by bringing it into the 3D plain."
the approach was still the same, OoT "could" feel like a LTTP remake. The dungeons were what made these two so special.

"Each shrine has a unique puzzle and travelling the world never gets boring as enemies, weather, time is always going to be different."

i thought all the opposite. First repetitive dungeons was the first major let down.
Shrines i felt were something forced into the players (master sword as an example). i HAD to find shrines to use them to teleport.
I mean no matter how amazing the open world is, imagine if the possibility to teleport wasn't there. NOBODY would appreciate miles and miles of walking and riding, let's face it!

i fully respect your view, but i have mine and it is just as valid.

Nu2980d ago

The younger developers will push Nintendo to better game quality.

remixx1162980d ago

I agree with alot of the discussions here, breath of the wild is great but it's dungeon are just slightly larger shrines with boring boss fights and a unique mechanic tacked on.

The story pacing of finding memories is "meh" and the lack of epic music so far hurts me inside.

Otherwise amaking game though, love it but sadly not for the same iconic reasons as past zelda games.

EddieNX 2980d ago

The divine beasts are the pinacle of game design. Living, moving, real time dungeons. The boss fights were epic as well IMO .

bouzebbal2980d ago

Spoil WARNING:

DO NOT READ IF YOU AREN'T DONE WITH THE GAME..

pinacle of game design? finding 4 terminals by turning mechanisms?
it's ok they did it on one of them, but all 4 seemed like a lazy approach tbh.
what i prefered with previous zeldas is every boss was unique. in this one sword is all you need (and bomb for one of them i think).
everytime you activate the main terminal the animation is exactly the same way where the boss is released.

EddieNX 2980d ago

Think about how difficult it must of been to design them and get them to work the way they do, its never been done before and its astonishing.

bouzebbal2980d ago (Edited 2980d ago )

i did think, and i think it is very lazy. one time is ok but not in every single one.
many games did it in the past, God of War, Maximo, Resident Evil are some of the ones i can remember..

Even Zelda 64 did it in a much more elegant way in the second water temple with water level. You really need to think before acting.

Goldby2980d ago (Edited 2980d ago )

@Eddie

SoC say hi for living breathing dungeons. and there were more than 4 of them too.

FloydianAndroid2980d ago

I disagree that it sacrificed what made Zelda legendary. Every Zelda game has different elements anyway. I think it has the most in common with the original Lefend of Zelda. A lot of people won't get that because it's so much bigger than the first game, but the sense of grandeur is very similar to how I felt as a kid playing the original game. BOTW is not the greatest game ever or anything but it's a very worthy iteration of the franchise. It's the best game since ocarina imo.

thehitman13982980d ago

And they say ng4 is only ps lovers. Lol look how many dislikes you got for simply stating the facts

Is this game really cell shaded?

jaymacx2980d ago

its a combination of real and cel shaded.

One thing not mentioned is you can shield surf down mountains. So fun. Also you can ride on Sand Seals.

SR3882980d ago

Where you been the past like 5 years? Lol

MagicBeanz2979d ago

Playing games that are not cell shaded, which I thought went out of style ages ago for 3D games, where you been?

HollowKnight2980d ago (Edited 2980d ago )

"30) The “Game Over” text can be icy, electrified, or have other special effects based off how you died."
My mind Is Blown!!! I can post 200 large things why IGN Is the worst!!

Segata2979d ago

You hate on a game and system that the very game your name is of is coming to Switch.

HollowKnight2979d ago (Edited 2979d ago )

What!!? I never said Zelda Sucked or Switch Sucked!! Can you people even read?

Segata2979d ago

Cel shading never went away. Borderlands.Guilty Gear Xrd,Tales games,Any Telltale game,Transformers Devestation,Valkyrie Chronicles,Dragon Quest,Dragon Ball,RiME,The Witness,Furi,D4 Dark Dreams Don't Die,Let it Die,Persona 5,Ni No Kuni II,Gravity Rush 2,Aragami,Ori & The Blind Forest and many more this gen alone.

MagicBeanz2979d ago

And theres a far bigger list of games that dont use cell shading, thankfully.

I absolutely love swimming upstream like a salmon.

EddieNX 2980d ago

This list just proves why this game is so incredible. Any skeptic of this game just needs to read this list to understand the high scores. The level of interaction is mind blowing.

N4G will be mad at this, how dare you praise Breath of the wild

stupidusername1191d ago

To all future comments:
No one is saying Zelda invented anything. BoTW used existing ideas and took inspiration from a lot of games and streamlined it. The game sold 25 million copies, received massive praise and many game developers follow suit. Just like how Apple didn’t invent smartphones, but still made the phone that other companies were inspired by later on.

GhostofHorizon1191d ago

I can only speak for myself but I have nothing against the game, it's the same article being written every 3 months that's getting a bit old. There are pleanty of other great games out there that have inspired genres that get barely any recognition.

I think the game did a good job about streamlining some aspects but if it didn't have Zelda in it's name some of the weaker parts of the game would not have been forgiven as easily.

H91191d ago

This, you know it feels like if people don't say that the game invested everything then they are not praising it enough, the best praise that can be given to it is that it did open world right, that's it, it doesn't have to be the first to be the best!

Vanfernal1191d ago

It's also about to turn 5 years old... We get it... Botw is great. How about more articles saying RE4 revolutionized 3rd person shooters with the over the shoulder cam. Or how Mario 64 redifined 3D platforming... Or how Street Fighter 2 pushed fighting games into the mainstream... At this point these articles are just redundant.

LordoftheCritics1191d ago

BOTW became a copyable form. Thats what makes it special.

ZeekQuattro1191d ago

If BOTW is public enemy number one on here Game Pass is a close second. That service is hated with a passion on here. Don't dare praise it either. Only Sony branded content deserve such praise.

H91191d ago

I haven't owned anything Xbox related since 360 because I just don't like their direction anymore yet I can't but be jealous about game pass it's a brilliant offer

MadLad1191d ago (Edited 1191d ago )

This place is a giant bubble.
I can have a level headed, reasonable discussion on almost any reasonable YouTube video. Even with people of differing opinions.

Here? It's almost always vitriol and dog piling if you're not siding with the majority.

MadLad1191d ago

Yeah. It feels like one of the most needlessly hated games here on N4G, honestly.

CS71191d ago

It is such a strange phenomenon? What caused it?

BOTW is known as a masterpiece every where else. But on N4G it is a “Ubisoft game with a Zelda Skin”.

H91190d ago

Yes and yet Ghost of Tsushima, the game that they call Samurai Creed is not a Ubisoft copy

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1190d ago
DarkZane1191d ago

I love Breath of the Wild, but stop saying it invented the wheel. Open world games existed before that so I am pretty sure none of those game were influenced by it. Hell Pokemon Legends Arceus is technically more similar to Monster Hunter than an open world game.

Shuckylad1191d ago

Let’s be honest for a wii u game botw is great. If inspiration is taken from it then great.

AuraAbjure1191d ago

It's why I bought a Wii U. There were no other games worth playing cuz I also had an Xbone.

Terry_B1191d ago

Hey..another opinion piece from a website with the word Nintendo in its name about how Zelda Botw influenced other games ..lel.

Flawlessmic1191d ago (Edited 1191d ago )

Look i love breath of the wild as much as the next guy but honestly ur acting like it changed the game or something.

It didnt it was an amazingly crafted open world game, that its.

Tgat fact tgatva few games steal certain things from it doesnt make it more special. Devs steal things from other games literally the time.

So are we gonna have posts about how a crummy game with nice feature influenced all gamers after it just vecause a few things were taken from it by another dev.

Its weird to say this about such an amazing game but its literally overrated at this point.

Something like gta deserves these articles gta and red dead are exemplary examples on how to do open world and the added bonus of them basically starting the trend and perfecting it

Concertoine1191d ago (Edited 1191d ago )

There were also articles discussing the influence of GTA 3 and Shenmue when they came out 20 years ago.

CS71191d ago

GTA’s open world is flawed in that the missions can be carried out only a specific and precise way.

BOTW actually fixes that and allows you to do the missions in whatever way you figure out.

GTA is amazing and way more revolutionary but BOTW does push the needle forward.

Flawlessmic1191d ago

@cs7

Thats because the game barely has a story so it can do that, it gave u 4 major objectives which were all effectively the same. It was the envirments tgat made it different and that i could do it any order but thats all because the minimalist story allowed it.

How would a game with a full on story like gta, red dead, horizon work if it was just done in any order?

Zelda did push the need cause it was an brillant game but people overrate it for 2 simple things, not having a map full of icons and the fact u can complete those same 4 objectives in any order.

CBaoth1190d ago

So then it copied the gameplay mechanic from Crackdown? That's all you reference. Did you NOT know BOTW copied it from another game? That's pushing the envelope?
