Mass Effect: Andromeda Review – Game Informer

Joe Juba - "When taken as its own journey (and not in comparison to Shepard’s saga), Mass Effect: Andromeda is fun, and the important parts work. The narrative isn’t astounding, but keeps you invested and drives you forward. The combat is entertaining whether you're in single-player or multiplayer. The crew isn't my favorite, but I like them and they have some good moments. Even with its other problems, these are the largest forces shaping your experience with Mass Effect: Andromeda, and they make it worth playing. At the same time, I was often left looking through a haze of inconveniences and dreaming about the game it could have been."

The few 8's I've seen are a glimmer of light in the darkness. I will be picking up this game.

Azrael-XIII2968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

From what I've played so far I think 8 is a good score. The games not perfect by any stretch but it's nowhere near as bad as a lot of reviews and comment sections would lead you to believe. But seeing how the game structurally is similar to dragon age inquisition, a game that also had its fair share of mixed reviews and a that I also actually enjoyed, take that as you will.

I also think some of the negativity surrounding it just stems from it having the unfortunate timing of coming out after 2 absolutely fantastic RPG's in Horizon and Zelda

OB1Biker2968d ago

There are quite a few 9s too but you shouldnt care too much about reviews. I dont

TacticAce2968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

Its 2017 guys stop giving developers slack when you know its not up to the standards of even its own predecessors...

Bigpappy2968d ago

How do you know ? Further more, how do you know what the standards are for most? You people just revel in negativity. You love to destroy.

Here is an idea : you play it. if you don't like it bitch and complain and don't buy anymore of their games. When I buy it I will decide for myself whether it meets my standards of which you have no clue what those are

PhoenixUp2968d ago

This game looks to be as divisive as Dragon Age 2

annoyedgamer2968d ago

I played the demo for that and couldnt even finish it.

The division comes from 4 camps:

Fanboys who can see a letdown
Fanboys who refuse to see a letdown
Paid reviews
unpaid reviews

oIITSBIIo2968d ago

My personal scores are close to Game Informer's scores most of the time so I guess I will like this game.

starchild2968d ago

Yeah, for me they tend to be a little more similar in their tastes than some other outlets.

I think Bioware should have done a better job on the facial expressions and lip syncing, but I haven't seen much else that really bothers me about the game. I think the combat looks massively improved, the environments are stunning and the storytelling still engages me based on what I've watched so far.

JeffGUNZ2968d ago

I played as much as EA Access would allow and it's great. Sure, some fps drops and the animation is typical bioware/ME animations, but none of it takes away from the context of the game. The combat is noticebly improved, the graphics are nice, the sounds are great, and so far the story is awesome. I loved the original Mass Effect and this one feels like home. If you like ME, you'll love this.

Azrael-XIII2968d ago

That's really the way reviews should be looked at. Too many people just look at a metacritic score to decide if they should try a game. Instead you should find a site or reviewer who's taste align with your's and actually READ their review instead just looking at a score.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul105d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow105d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

ZeekQuattro105d ago

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast147d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine147d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast147d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman147d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast147d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

IAMRealHooman146d ago

it's like bitch but your shirt back on, your not blue or spikey get away from me

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics182d ago (Edited 182d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac181d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992182d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX182d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9182d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne182d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast182d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne182d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog181d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay182d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000182d ago (Edited 182d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon182d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT182d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon182d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139182d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein182d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
