Why I prefer Mario in 2D

The first Mario games outclassed the competition because they felt amazing to run and jump. 3D Marios are inventive and I respect their evolution, but the movable camera and 3D movement has never been able to provide the same thrills of precise 2D platforming.

"Perhaps due to the unremarkable sales of Galaxy 1 (11.36m compared to 29 million for New SMB)"

You call selling 11.36 million unremarkable?

RosweeSon3011d ago (Edited 3011d ago )

Haha yeah many great games have sold a Lot worse than that. I actually loved Mario Galaxy 1, 2 also fantastic but 1 was Epic. I think it's pretty much a modern day (at the time) Mario 64 it's been a while since I played but remember you've got the world to run round and then you find all the different levels dotted around not too disimilar to Mario64 with the paintings then get transported to a new Planet i.e. World from Mario64 but yeah Galaxy was amazing people moan about Wii remote it's exactly the same buttons as Mario 64 I don't understand the complaints you've got you nunchuck analogue and Wii remote has A and B buttons all the same moves fantastic game.
I do really love the classic 2d games Mario 1 originator, 3 innovator, super Mario World renovator (jazzed up Mario Bros 3) a really good one but yeah Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are so bloody great I still go back to them now every now and again and have a blast it's been a few years might have to nail em on my 3ds soon. Been saving them for a rainy day but the dark backlog 😩😉✌🏻 Great games tho 🕹

Also, the best Mario game in my opinion was Mario 64. That game had everything you would want in a Mario game and a 2D Mario game wouldn't be able capture all of the essence like Mario 64 did. I will say Mario 3 is up there as well but I am VERY excited for the new Mario on the Switch.

Selectgamer3011d ago

Yes. Mario 64 sold 11 million out of 32 million N64 owners. They sold less copies of Galaxy despite having 100 MILLION Wii owners. Selling just a third compared to New Super Mario Wii. Unremarkable.

2D Marios have trounced 3D every generation.

PhoenixUp3011d ago

@ Select

For starters most exclusives do not sell pass 10 million. So it's unreasonable to say the ones that do have unremarkable sales.

Second, Nintendo's own website says that Super Mario Galaxy sold 12.72 million units, which makes it the highest selling 3D Mario game outpacing SM64.

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/...

Not to mention that you're attachment rate argument is heavily flawed. For example Mario Kart Wii sold 36.83 million units on a userbase of 101 million units while Mario Kart DS sold 23.60 million with a user-base of 154 million. It'd be ridiculous to say MKDS's whopping 20+ million total is unremarkable just because it didn't outperform MKWii.

Finally you're missing the point. 3D Mario games are still always one of the best selling games on any Nintendo platform they release on. To say their sales are unremarkable is to say most of Nintendo's software sales on every platform is unremarkable.

P.S. Super Mario 3D Land sold more than New Super Mario Bros 2

Selectgamer3010d ago

I only brought up the sales to theorize why Nintendo included a tutorial DVD.

My main point is that New Mario U and 3D World are better than Galaxy because they have more precise control and speed.

I should have called it 'Galaxy is overrated'

PhoenixUp3010d ago

Overrated how? People tend to give it the amount of praise it warrants.

It does more to change up the structure than most NSMB games

I think I might prefer 2D Mario more too, but the 3D Mario games are up there with being the best 3D adventure games too. Mario is actually one of the few properties that has been able to be successful in 2D and 3D. Not too many survived the transition. So kudos to the Mario series for doing that and still being relevant.

chris2353011d ago

easy: stop blogging and start up your snes then. seriously.

Selectgamer3011d ago

I love starting up my SNES. It loads immediately and never requires system updates. But like the picture states, I loved New Mario U, thought it outclasses Galaxy in terms of pure fun. 3D World was great as well, but because it borrowed 2D Mario mechanics

ninsigma3011d ago

Nah I'm way bored of 2D mario. Mario 3D world was awesome on the wii u and much prefer that.

RosweeSon3011d ago

I'm nailing that very soon, before new one arrives 😩Bloody backlogs haha

ninsigma3011d ago

It's great fun. I don't want to go back to 2D Mario after playing 3D world lol

Selectgamer3011d ago

I loved Mario 3D World because of it's 2D tendencies. It emphasized speed, a fixed camera, and precise platforming

SEGA Hasn't Given Up On Competing Against Mario With Sonic

SEGA’s Second Division Manager, Osamu Ohashi, wants to surpass Mario by strengthening the Sonic IP.

TheColbertinator588d ago

Pointless really. Mario is galactic .

SinisterMister588d ago

So is Sonic, but at a lesser level comparatively.

Snookies12586d ago

Nah, Sonic is definitely iconic but it will never be at the level of Mario. Much less surpass it...

Knightofelemia588d ago

They can compete but Mario will always win. Mario and Sonic cater to different fans or fans who like both.

jwillj2k4588d ago

Give sonic a reason to run fast mix in some Saw and Texas chainsaw features.

Barlos588d ago

Sonic doesn't have to compete though. Both are their own thing, there's plenty of room for them both.

Inverno588d ago

Thing is Sonic despite the bad games is still an icon as big as Mario, probably bigger cause he's seen more in media than Mario. More cartoons, more movies, more memes. So on that end he's good, they just gotta stop making bad games.

Rebel_Scum588d ago

Nailed it. Tbh though Sega don't know how to make a good Sonic game anymore.
