Is God of War II Still Great 10 Years Later?

PSLS: "Sony was in a strange place when God of War II released 10 years ago today. The highly successful PlayStation 2 continued to have a healthy library of new releases despite the PlayStation 3 being released in late 2006. A hefty price tag and lack of must-have titles early on put Sony behind Microsoft, which was an unfathomable position just a few years prior. To hurt things further, Sony’s biggest release in 2007 was for the PlayStation 2, not their new system they were trying to get off store shelves."

Classic masterpieces like this game are timeless

FullmetalRoyale2600d ago

The Poseidon opening is still dope. Graphics have gotten better, but that buildup is still on top.

FullmetalRoyale2600d ago

Jeebus... I clearly couldn't tell that we were talking about two, and not three, which is what I was referring to.
I love GoW(my favorite), and Ghost of Sparta the most. But I just love the presentation of the entire series, and two did take it to the next level.

nX2599d ago (Edited 2599d ago )

GoW3 kills everything though. Still my most memorable action game ever, nothing even comes close to that kind of spectacle. Not even it's trailer has been topped actually :D

gangsta_red2600d ago

Easily the best out of the whole trilogy!

I remember playing this and being blown away on how gorgeous it looked on PS3.

gangsta_red2600d ago

Yes I did, and this is why we need the edit button back and longer than 15 minutes.

morganfell2600d ago (Edited 2600d ago )

Actually it also looked good on the PS3...and the Vita. I really like every single GOW game from GOW through Ascension. But for me Ghost of Sparta had the best story and it was Kratos at his most selfless.

StormLegend2600d ago

@gangsta The edit button is back and you can only change your comment after a few seconds. I like it that way or trolls will change it every min.

gangsta_red2599d ago

I usually post on my smartphone and my touch screen is super sensitive...not to mention I'm at work so I'm rushing to get a comment in before I'm caught, so that also ups the chances of spelling and grammar errors.

Yea, 1st world problems.

jeremyj29132599d ago

What makes it the best to you? I've heard this from a lot of different ppl and I'm just curious.

gangsta_red2599d ago (Edited 2599d ago )

Well first and foremost were the graphics, it just at that time seemed like the most gorgeous game to ever come out for PS2.

The action imo was on par with Devil May Cry 3 which is another game that I think is the best when it comes to third person hack and slash. The fight scenes were more brutal and hilarious at the same time.

The weapons in GoW2 were among some of the best in the series.

Plus there's a scene where you get transported back in time to when you fight Ares from part one and while your fighting Zeus(?) you can see the first battle in the background. It was just an epic experience that was done perfectly.

Those are just a few of the things that really standout (and that I remember). I do feel that part 2 was the pinnacle of the series, and it has much to do with part 3 being so disappointing also.

jeremyj29132599d ago

@gangsta_red I appreciate you taking the time to explain that. I feel the same way about 3. My only issue with the series has always been the lack of differentiated weaponry. My favorite one is the Nemean Cestus. Could I bother you again to explain why you feel GoW3 was a let down?

masterfox2600d ago

Each God of War iteration is a Masterpiece from PS3 all the way to PSP, and soon the PS4 will have its God of War iteration and it will join this Masterful series.

AnubisG2600d ago

So you did not like GoW 1 and 2? Because they were on PS2 before they got remastered on PS3.

masterfox2600d ago

lol what ?, I played the originals in my PS2, but yeah I should it mention Masterpieces since the PS2. ;)

PhoenixUp2600d ago

It's as great as Heavenly Sword was 10 years ago

xMANB3ARP1G2600d ago (Edited 2600d ago )

as much as i liked heavenly sword calm down. heavenly sword wasnt good enough for a sequel unfortunately, i feel like some of the early games were really hurt long term by there motion controls of the sixaxis not working right

PhoenixUp2600d ago

Heavenly Sword is better than Knack and that got a sequel

nX2599d ago

Yes but Knack probably sold better while being less expensive to develop.

PhoenixUp2599d ago

Heavenly Sword was going to get a sequel, but Ninja Theory decided to work on Enslaved instead

xMANB3ARP1G2593d ago (Edited 2593d ago )

not arguing there but like nX said it was most likely cheaper to make. cell was not easy to work with. heavenly sword was a great game i would love a 3

PhoenixUp2593d ago

Actual effort was made for a Heavenly Sword sequel. It had not to do with Cell

SCW19822600d ago

Best one in the series by a long shot! So glad Barlog is back in directors seat.

Both requels over 2 and 3? Clowns. Those are two of the most boring games I've ever played.

Snookies12170d ago

GoW 3 was amazing, but I personally hated just one thing. (This is on me alone, because I was dumb, lol.) I hated that you couldn't skip cutscenes on repeat playthroughs. I had to go back through the game a third time because I missed one trophy accidentally on my way to the platinum... The cutscenes were great the first go round, even the second... But the third was pretty agonizing.

Haven't played Ragnarok, but I still think GoW 4 is a wonderful game in its own right. Not sure how I would stack them up against each other honestly.

Monstieur170d ago (Edited 170d ago )

I don't consider the reboot part of the original series. The original series were high-skill games with combos and rewards for mixing things up.

solideagle169d ago

lol square, square and triangle is the only combo you needed. I have played all of them on the hardest difficulties...

Golfcoachh170d ago

Maybe I’m just old school but I just couldn’t get into the last two. Maybe it’s the slower action and more story telling but the original trilogy was by far my favorite.

Crows90170d ago

It's not that youre old school. They're different genres

JL2930169d ago (Edited 169d ago )

Me either, at all. It's just yap yap yap. They try to be a RPG's instead of being action games like they used to be.

Fluke_Skywalker170d ago

I'd put the two psp games over 3 in terms of story any day. But not over 2.

TheEnigma313170d ago (Edited 170d ago )

My favorite was part 2 and I think Ragnarok is better that 2018.

Shane Kim170d ago

The newer games are better imo.

ravens52170d ago

There is no worst. Except for Ascension, only cause I didn't play it lol. They are all masterpieces. 1,2,3, 2018 and Ragnarok. 1 of, if not the greatest video game franchise...besides MetalGear.

Snookies12170d ago

Oh wow, I actually forgot that Ascension even existed... I never played it either.

Crows90170d ago

I like ascension. It was different and some interesting combat additions.

darthv72170d ago

If you didnt play it, how could you call it the worst? Its not as bad as the media portrayed it. Honestly the worst are those flash games. they arent even considered true GoW games but in name only. At least Ascension is a real GoW game.

ravens52170d ago

Not saying it's a terrible game. Just mean it's at the bottom of my list. I played a little bit of it. Jus to me, compared to the other main games, it's last.

Fluke_Skywalker170d ago

Ascension is the only GOW game I never finished. Hated it.

Inverno170d ago

Can't agree, older games do so much more than the last two. More weapons, magic abilities, enemies are more varied, level design is also more aesthetically pleasing, and agree with those who say that they shouldn't have removed jumping. Was a time I'd agree, but those old games are so so much better, that they really should've looked into bringing into the reboot/sequels.

Crows90170d ago (Edited 170d ago )

If a game is good then a game is good. Doesn't matter what came before or what comes after.

Inverno170d ago

Of course it matters. If not for what what came before there wouldn't be an after. And if something is great before then you strive to make it just as good if not better, after. I personally don't think there's a fair way to judge the new with the old because the newer games are still essentially a reboot, and went a way different direction. But I still believe the old games did it better. I'm probably bias though since I've been going back to old games and have been finding that they lack all the annoying aspects that devs have shoehorned into new games to fluff out game time.

Crows90169d ago

@Inverno

Im not talking about the passage of time here. Im talking about individual pieces of software. If a game is good then it is good. Thats not a controversial statement. You can compare good with good...sure. But you still end up with good. Now if there is a bad game in the mix and you compare you do end up with some differentials between them...makes sense to compare and see where it went wrong.

But theyre different genres and styles which were individually executed very well.

And no. The new games are not a reboot. Theyre a new direction but simply a continuation.
Tomb raider was a reboot.

Inverno169d ago

The new games are definitely a reboot, and a continuation, it can be both which it is. And a good game might be good, but my point is that if there are things done better before it then there's plenty of room for critiquing and trying to make whatever comes after better rather than just good.

It's so disappointing that to this day, I have not seen a game match what BLACK offers in an FPS.

ApocalypseShadow200d ago

Shame isn't it. I thought we'd be at a point of destructible backgrounds, objects, pyrotechnics etc in shooters. I sold many a copy in the demo unit when I managed a franchise Game Crazy back then. But I stopped playing shooters because they didn't evolve. Heavy weapon. Shoot a wall or glass. Nothing happens. Lol. Except for Killzone 2. I enjoyed that.

But then I woke and remembered it's EA. EA didn't care really. They just wanted to kill competition from Criterion and Burnout. And own Renderware to profit from as many developers used that engine. Only thing was that developers ran as fast as they could away from EA to Unreal Engine and its pop in and Vaseline graphics. Shame on EA. And then they bought Dice for Frostbite. Evil busters.

Anyway, too many PS2 games to count. Some of my personal faves being DMC, Genji, Bujingai, Blood Will Tell, Onimusha, Way of the Samurai, Japanese Berserk, Japanese Macross game that blew away the US Robotech game, RAD, Castlevania Lament of Innocence.... there's just too many. Let me stop. Lol

Cacabunga200d ago

Code Veronica
Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore
The Getaway
Time Crisis 3
Killzone
Mark of Kri
SSX

are some of my all times favorites missing on that list

shinoff2183199d ago

I've always Saud I'm not a fan of fps much , there's been some I really like and thought were really dope. Black falls into that category.

CoNn3rB200d ago

I would love nothing more than a remaster of the Jak series, including Jak X

Flawlessmic200d ago (Edited 200d ago )

The greatest console of all time !!!!

The last console from when gaming was pure, games didn't take 5 years to release, no online only, no half finished games, no mtx.

Ps2 was just banger after banger after banger.

It will always be my favourite.

sagapo199d ago

No Timesplitters in the list??

FinalFantasyFanatic199d ago

This is a really good list, pretty happy with the choices here.

I don't know about 20, but I know Dragon Quest VIII, FFXII, and Persona 3 are my top 3.

No particular order. Not a huge JRPG guy, but these hit it home for me.

Flawlessmic515d ago

Fairly solid list, would only change a few, I'd put onimusha in there, ico, personally would have vice city.

Then again I'd double up on some series dmc 1, all 3 gtas, both metal gears, all 3 jaks.

Ps2 was just crazily stacked really, every time I think back on it, those were the good days of gaming.

sagapo514d ago

Was thinking the same about Vice City. But yeah, solid list and great era of games!

shinoff2183514d ago

I still think ps1 was better game wise, but im sure thats an age thing depends on what you grew up with to an extent. I feel san andreas is to this day the best gta made. None compare 5 is close imo but just doesnt best it
