"What is the Scorpio going to exclusively run?"

The Scorpio UI

darthv723046d ago

I beg to differ with Patcher. In fact ALL games from XB1 will support Scorpio at launch because the Scorpio is fully BC with the XB1.

As far as games taking advantage of 4k, those will come in time just like they are coming to Pro.

The bigger question is how long until Scorpio (and Pro) get it's own games developed specifically to take advantage? No compromises or catering to the least common denominator. I have a strong feeling it will happen for both sooner rather than later.

andrewsquall3046d ago

No, that will also be shared across to the original Xbone just like the games. Do expect Xbone and Scorpio to exclusively get 6 more refreshes/rehashes in the next 2 years though.

rainslacker3045d ago

Shouldn't be too bad. Xbox fans can at least play their Xbox for now. It's not like we can play Horizon now, so it makes the wait less bearable.

I think it's one of those rare moments where he's right for once...

Games that release around the same time as the Scorpio (and afterwards) and have PS4 Pro support will more than likely also have Scorpio support. But for older games it will go the same route as with the Pro, some will, most won't.
As for 4k, well, even MS have said themselves that not all games releasing on it will be in native 4k except for their own first party titles.

So it's nothing new and totally what to expect...

3046d ago
CorndogBurglar3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

@SHLOOBMM3

Considering that knows the target date the Scorpio will release and more than likely is fully aware of the progress of games being made for it, I think its safe to say that he is right and probably knows what he's talking about here.

He wouldn't come out and say something like this if it wasn't a likelihood. He would want people to think that there will be tons of support at launch so more people will buy the console early.

Ju3046d ago

He's right because which Xbox games are there? And of course, all Pro titles will target the 4k on the Scorpio as well. Can't really go wrong there.

3046d ago
3046d ago
ziggurcat3046d ago

"Patcher is delusional"

Sure, but I don't think there's anything wrong with what he's said here - I imagine it'll be similar to how the Pro is handled because there was only a small selection of games that supported the Pro when it first hit the market. There's likely a specific point where devs have to support the Scorpio, and it's optional if devs want to patch in support for their game prior to that point.

Aenea3046d ago

@shloobmm3

All games releasing after the summer that have Pro support probably will have Scorpio supports as well. But all the games currently that already have Pro support and no Scorpio support currently might not get Scorpio support.

As I already said, and ziggurcat as well, when it releases, which is what Pachter is talking about, it probably will go the same way as with the Pro. Some older games get patches but most will not.

As for devs having the dev.kit for more than a year now seems odd to me, where did you get that information from? Over a year ago means January 2016 or even earlier which seems highly unlikely since we would have heard about that way before we heard anything about the PS4 Pro.

Look at how Pro support came about for games, which we at least know that in February/March there were already dev.kits around and how many games had Pro support in November when it released. Why do you think it will be different for the Scorpio?

As for the 1050 Xbox One games that are already there, well, those will run on the Scorpio since they are Xbox One games, but won't have specific Scorpio support so not sure why you even mention them...

Why is it so hard to think the situation will be the same as it was with the PS4 Pro? You think devs will do more for MS or something? Highly doubtful...

TheCommentator3046d ago

You're right, Aenea. This is an obvious statement from Pachter but he does contradict himself. Why say that very few games will support Scorpio at launch, yet say that all the (multiplat) games that support the Pro will support Scorpio? Can someone tell me how the Pro has had bad support since it launched? That's what Pachter alludes to and it's nonsense.

The mid-gen consoles will get plenty of support from new titles and patches, so the only thing we can't count on is every game in native 4K because it's not a prerequisite mandated by MS. MS 1st party games releasing this year will all be native 4K though, and at least Halo 5, FH3, and Gears 4 will be as well.

freshslicepizza3046d ago

Put it this way, there will be far more games available at launch that use the extra power than the Pro had.

Pachter just follows trends and because Sony is doing so well he's not as confident about Scorpio . Before he thought switch would fail without third party and now that the reaction is quite positive and pre-orders doing well he's changed his opinion.

With Scorpio also part of the Windows platform it will be even easier. Games like mass effect will use the power of Scorpio and many other PC games.

Aenea3046d ago

@moldy

"Put it this way, there will be far more games available at launch that use the extra power than the Pro had."

And why would that be?? Know something the rest of us don't?

ShowanW3046d ago

@Aenea...

Phil Spencer said that he is hoping that 3rd party are using the PC assets while making their games for Scorpio...

andrewsquall3046d ago

@Aenea Patcher is correct far more times than he is wrong. Its always his most "go either way" statements that make it to N4G though.
But this time he is clearly wrong. There is NO way that could be true. Microsoft could not be THIS stupid to announce this console at E3 2016 and for there to be no games that take advantage of it come late 2017. Then again, they DID follow up the PS4 reveal with, somehow, THE worst gaming console reveal in history. They had 3 months on Sony and could have done ANYTHING and that was what they went with. And it WAS the worst because never has their been million up millions of fans watching a gaming console reveal live and to witness such a train wreck first hand.

The 4K thing is pure crap yet again, they will run "in 4K" but that is a blatant term without the word "native" in there.

TheCommentator3045d ago

Aenea, I think what Moldy is saying is if all of the 3rd party games that are currently enhanced for Pro are also enhanced for Scorpio at launch, then Scorpio would be launching with more compatibility than Pro launched with. The relative number of mid-gen compatible games for both consoles should be quite similar overall though.

Aenea3045d ago

@TheCommentator

But all the current Pro enhanced games do not have Scorpio support at this moment in time so the devs need to go back to them and add Scorpio support before the console release. Am not so sure all devs/publishers are going to be up for that after we've seen that not all were to do so for the PS4 Pro last year, that is what I'm saying!

This means that not automatically all Pro supported games wil get Scorpio support, not the ones that received Pro support before the Scorpio released...

@Showan

Where is he saying that?

And what are 4k assets anyways? And why would it mean that there will be more games for Scorpio on release than the PS4 Pro had? Having higher res assets available doesn't mean the game ports itself!

@andrew

Nonsense, there will be Scorpio supported games at the end of the year. At least the new Forza will be native 4k, so will any other first party game. Plus every games releasing from late Summer/early Fall onwards will have Scorpio support if they also have Pro support which they will.

*at launch* I just don't see that it's going to be an enormous list, the Pro showed how willing devs are to go back to their old games and add support for a more powerful console version, no matter how simple it will be to do so will not make sure it will happen. Besides that I don't think it will be easier than it is for the Pro anyways...

TheCommentator3045d ago

Aenea, I see what you're saying about how not all games with Pro patches will automatically have Scorpio support too. I would think that most probably will, personally, but who really knows until Scorpio releases.

To answer your question to Showan about 4K assets: Native 4K is specifically related to the frame buffer only. The assets are the textures applied to the surfaces of objects. A prime example is the Fallout 4K texture pack which came in at a whopping 58GB for the PC, and those textures would be considered 4K assets. Hope that helps!

Microsoft can't force non- first party (or non-secondary partners) to patch their games for Scorpio.

Bigpappy3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

But they could release the PC version on the Scorpio quite easily... don't you think?

It's not very smart to follow Patcher for your gaming predictions.

Sciurus_vulgaris3046d ago

PC version? I assume a game has to be ported to the XB1 Scorpio. There is technically likely just an XB1 version, that is coded to take advantage of the Scorpio hardware.

AZRoboto3046d ago (Edited 3046d ago )

A game doesnt have to be ported if it's built as a UWP application - updated tools allow the product to target the separate platforms without separate versioning, close to an iOS app using a 2x image on an iPhone 7 and a 3x image on a 7 Plus.

Resident Evil 7 and COD IW are released on the Windows Store. RE7 is even an Xbox Play Anywhere title, the first non-Ms game to be so. COD is a poor implementation as they opted to segregate the user base completely

thekhurg3046d ago

LOL no they can't just release the pc version.

kevnb3046d ago

lets say they can just use the uwp version, thats still not that many games.

Aenea3046d ago

UWP will not do much for AAA games, it doesn't make porting that much easier, still needs you to optimise your game for each different hardware platform. Besides generally (3rd party) PC games won't be using UWP at all.

So no, they can't either use UWP for this nor can they just release the PC version....

3046d ago
Ju3046d ago

Since there are no Scorpio exclusives, those would have to run on the XB1 as well. I bought that will happen. Why wouldn't those games already have released then?

3046d ago
ShowanW3046d ago

The PC version of 3rd party games WILL be the Scorpio version.
And UWP is a package container that is scales from PC all the way down to mobile.
The package scans the hardware and then proceeds to install the proper package contents that the hardware can handle.
So in theory yes the PC version of game CAN in fact be the Scorpio version as well.

If people stop bashing Microsoft for a split sec and did some research on the new tool sets they sent out to developers, they would understand why they are a mega software company. they learn from their mistakes and course correct probably better than anyone.

Aenea3045d ago

@Showan

No, the Scorpio is NOT a PC you can't just grab the PC game and release it on Scorpio. People believe MS have made something magical with UWP but it isn't. Yes it helps, but games still need to be optimised. Not sure why some don't seem to get that. Plus most 3rd party games are NOT using UWP anyways...

+ Show (7) more repliesLast reply 3045d ago
CasualHandz3046d ago

Naw they dont have to force anything if its already there. UWP and dx12 is what they use now. You cant think of this type of stuff as it has always been before. UWP is whats gonna be used to just bring over games from pc with very little work from devs.

3045d ago
HaikusfromBuddha3045d ago

A lot of their games that are on the Windows Store are already 4K ready. With Capcom and Activision jumping on board with RE7 and CoD it seems like third parties are also now getting ready for Scorpio. Those games are UWP and the news last week said the Xbox can play UWP games. Seems like logic is saying Activision and Capcom made those 4K games so they could run on Scorpio.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3045d ago
ninsigma3047d ago

But aren't pretty much all big 3rd parties supporting pro now with their upcoming games?? So that means all of them will support the scorpio as well. And MS are hardly going to release their own games without support for scorpio. so the first part of what he says doesn't really hold any substance. As for 4K, if they use a type of checkerboard rendering then I'd imagine that games WILL in fact be 4k via checkerboard for those that the machine can handle but if scorpio is just like an xbox one just with different hardware to give more resources for better looking games then yeah I doubt they will run in 4K, or at least not as often as people would like.

Paytaa3046d ago

Watch, the new trend will be "exclusive" patches or platform exclusive game upgrades for either Scorpio or PS4Pro.

ninsigma3046d ago

That would be one of the most ridiculous things to happen in the industry lol

3046d ago
theXtReMe13047d ago (Edited 3047d ago )

Im a PS4 Pro owner and can see this is BS. If a third party is supporting the Pro with patches and games, then more than likely they will do the same for the Scorpio. Though, not all, as the hardware is different... so it will take them adding a forth of fifth system(Xbox One, PS4, PC, Pro and Scorpio) to their development cycle. Hopefully games are as easily upgraded, as they are with the Pro. Though, like the Pro, support will vary from game to game, developer to developer. I wouldnt worry though, if youre planning on getting a Scorpio. I think the initial support will be thin, because developers will have to learn the hardware... but once they do, look out. You are going to have some incredible looking games. The Pro was no different at launch, but near every day you hear about another game getting a patch.

As far as 4K is concerned, I think the same will hold true for the Scorpio. First party and Indie titles will support native 4K and others will use Microsofts version of checkerboard rendering. Believe me when I tell you, you will not see much of a difference from native unless you are sitting inches away from a 4K desktop monitor. Even at 6tflops, it will be hard to keep current game quality at native 4K. Though, you guys will have more titles hitting that native number due to the added power. Again, it will vary from developer to developer.

Exciting times for gamers!

Bigpappy3046d ago

Not a bad summation. But I see it a bit differently. M$ is more focused on getting the PC port of the games released on Scorpio than adding assets to the X1 version. So the approaches are a bit different.

CasualHandz3046d ago

Theres nothing to learn from my understanding they just take the pc version of the game put it through UWP and.......thats it. It automatically scales up and down based on hardware. If you need an example use fallout shelter. Fallout shelter was not developed for console at all it was just a mobile/pc game that just....came over. Being realistic im pretty sure they have to put some effort into it but not nearly as much as a game developed for just console.

Aenea3046d ago

Yeah it's that easy! /s

3046d ago
ShowanW3046d ago

Actually @Aenea Microsoft has literally just made it that easy for devs.
Microsoft has basically given developers a "Walmart" tool system to work with.
a one stop shop, one code that scales from PC to mobile (as long as the hardware supports it)

Shannon Loftis who is Microsoft Studios Publishing already said there First Party games are running at 4K native for the launch of Scorprio.

"“Any games we’re making that we’re launching in the Scorpio time frame, we’re making sure they can natively render at 4K,” she said."

What first party games you talking about? Where are the exclusives? Where are their best line up of the year? Is their point of buying Scorpio, if you can build a PC and play are those games on PC?

According to Pachter, the PS4 Pro sales aren't doing very good. Maybe drop the price $50 and bundle in a game since Xbox One X is coming?

thatguyhayat2928d ago

Patcher baffles himself sometimes. Ps4 pro is doing really well

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2928d ago

Agreed. If 1 in 4 PS4's being sold is a Pro anything Pachter says about PS4 Pro sales numbers should be completely ignored.

bigmalky2928d ago

You can buy a PS4 Pro, with Horizon and Wipeout for £350 in the UK at the minute. Basically, you're getting the console for £280... I'd say that's a bargain. Why do people keep asking for another £50/$50 off when plenty of places do bundle deals with great prices?

Ju2928d ago

I have the feeling there is a price cut coming for the holidays.

LamerTamer2928d ago

They will have a hard time with X1X out.

bigmalky2928d ago

No they won't. Most parents will probably go for the cheaper option for Christmas presents. Most gamers that were waiting for a price for XoX, unless they're die hard Microsoft fans or spec junkies, will see that Sony have a cheaper option with huge exclusives coming in the new year, along with third party titles that will probably look little different to their XoX counterparts.

It's amazing how biased opinions seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, use logic.

Petebloodyonion2928d ago

Most parents will go for the basic version of Ps4 or Xbox1 instead of a pro or X1X.
Most parents will ask if it's play COD, FIFA or GTA since theses are the biggest sellers on both platforms.
Most parents don't have freaking clues about the exclusives coming on Xbox or PS4 just like you probably don't have a clue about exclusive deals coming on Apple music.

It's amazing how N4G hardcore gamers seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, follow the herd of COD/ GTA/ FiFA.

bigmalky2928d ago (Edited 2928d ago )

@Petebloodyonion

If you read my post properly, you'll see that I said parents will go for the cheaper console. I never even mentioned whether that's the upgraded models or not.

As for the games, it was in regard to gamers wanting a console, not the parents. Totally different sentence and subject.

It's amazing how people would actually look less like idiots if they actually read an entire post, before jumping on someone's comments.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2928d ago

If Sony drops the price of the Pro and it's $150 cheaper than the $500, checkerboarding beast, the only thing Sony will have a hard time doing is shipping Pro's to retailers.

bigmalky2928d ago

They don't need to drop the price. You can buy a Pro with one or two games in a package for £100 cheaper than an XoX with nothing on it's release.

LIGATURE2928d ago

I love ps4 but if the x gives all the multiplat games at least 1080/60 and update past multiplat games then id go for the x.but id get a switch before ither😂
