Why does Mass Effect: Andromeda´s female characters look so ugly?

I (Robin Ek, TGG) couldn´t help to notice that the female characters in Bioware´s upcoming action/RPG game "Mass Effect: Andromeda" looks absolutely terrible. So here´s my take on the matter.

Eamon2987d ago (Edited 2987d ago )

Could be just pre-determined art style or engine limitations or lazy designers.

The models' "weirdness" remind me of of Dragon Age Inquisition.

Neoprime2987d ago

They look ok to below-average.

getbacktogaming2987d ago

they look very masculine... it's done on purpose to justify the multiple options in terms of sexual orientation :P

frostypants2987d ago

It's got nothing to do with PC-ness, people. Jesus. It's just crappy character modeling.

Utalkin2me2987d ago

@Shin-Zantetsuken

Its a likeness, not a direct copy.

I think they are going for a masculine look.

medman2987d ago (Edited 2987d ago )

@affrohop
I agree with you. The irony is you know the majority of people complaining about a pixelated characters looks most likely are horrors in the mirror in this reality, such as it is.

Not good enough. Should also be body positive!

RememberThe3572987d ago (Edited 2987d ago )

I get so lost is the idiotic perspectives that now I can't see how this is a legitimate conversation. You want to create a world were people don't look like real people and everything is a fantasy but you think SJW need to get a grip on reality. So let's throw out the reality that attractiveness is subjective and insert value that attractiveness is subverted by people who want to create an art form reflective of their world view, a world view you say isn't based on reality. So you have game designers catering to the world they experience, not to white male hermits, and those white male hermits in turn reject the same aspects of reality in game that they reject in reality. This is like watching a LSD induced circle-jerk.

TheCommentator2987d ago

Naruga made his comment, then proceeded to boot up No More Heroes on the Wii so he could jerk off his Wiimote to recharge his sword. Thank god Japanese devs aren't idiotic! /sarcasm.

joab7772987d ago

Then look at the character models and let me know!

rainslacker2986d ago

ME has always been hit or miss on how well their characters looked. Their character modeling software in the original trilogy was far from compelling, and took a lot of work to make good looking characters. I'd imagine the same thing is the case here.

PeaSFor2986d ago

i always found Miranda face to look like and tranny mixed with michael jackson, yet some people found her attractive, so in the end its simply subjective.

Of course they do but video games are fantasy and a way of escapism. People see ugly people every day. Why would they want to keep seeing them in video games, too?

naruga2987d ago Show
AnubisG2987d ago

Why? Because of SJW's and political correctness. I hope it ends soon but I don't see it happening. In fact, I think we will see this crap more and more.

2987d ago
EyeAmTJ2987d ago

Western Devs? But the first 3 Mass Effect games the females looked good so yall sound dumb as hell blaming western devs LOL

notachance2987d ago

it's also like that in Dragon Age: Inquisition too, all the female romance choice is either masculine, dominating, or ugly af, almost all key characters are woman, and all the dumbs and comedic characters are male.

Bioware's character design division is controlled by SJW, if you don't believe me check back here after ME:A released. Hell, you can already see it in the trailer, the commander is a woman.

Eamon2987d ago

In DA:I, it did bother me to see so many female characters in powerful positions despite the fact the setting is supposed to be medieval European where racial and gender prejudice is supposed to be the norm.

It makes more sense to see more equality in Mass Effect series because this takes place in the future where we usually assume that there is much less racial and gender discrimination. The only problem is Speciesism.

Regarding romance options, I do agree that it did feel pretty limited for the straight male human protagonist. The choices were either Cassandra or Josephine. Clearly most would prefer Josephine but her model is just as weird shaped as this female Andromeda protagonist.

OctaneLord2986d ago (Edited 2986d ago )

I agree with you completely. EA is a multi-million dollar company that releases more titles throughout the year as opposed to some of the smaller publishers. This in turn, puts them in a more subjective position with media coverage. If they appeal to a broader audience by including characters that relate to all sorts of different people of shapes, colors, and forms they're less subjective to anti-feminism or SJW criticism. This in turn puts them in a position to profit off of a broader audience.

I just hate when they start trying too hard and make characters that are no longer believable in the subject matter. Their latest Need For Speed comes to mind for me. While the game technically played okay I had a hard time feeling immersed because I was forced to watch unskippable live action scenes every ten minutes with people that I couldn't stand, let alone consider believable characters for that type of setting and subject matter.

So the ugly feminists can't complain?

2987d ago
Vystrel2987d ago

Some times we want to play as good looking people in a video game. How often does Hollywood cast beautiful people to star in a movie? If they are not beautiful then the whole point of the movie is about looks.

The ME: Andromeda female faces aren't even "ugly" in the normal sense, they are ugly as in poorly modeled and awkward to look at.

Zeref2987d ago

I think they look fine though. Definitely not ugly.

Ogygian2987d ago

In real life, yes, but they don't have to in games.

Games are works of art, and so designers are free to create characters with a beauty which is beyond the constraints of this physical world we live in.

Rodney252987d ago

You can change her looks, I don't see the need to complain. Another example of people just complaining just cause.

senorfartcushion2987d ago

Didn't know you could make people in real life?

Sigh*

joab7772987d ago

Did you read the article? Yes, there are ugly people and good looking people, and in between etc. But Bioware seems to have no issue getting the modeling right for male characters, and had no problem with Miranda beforehand. Now, it's as if it is being done on purpose and this article brings in a lot of evidence to prove the point.

These are video game and I take no issue with representing all types of people. I'm not that great looking either. But it's also a product that we buy! This isn't a comparative journal piece or something that is going to change societal norms. It's a product being made to sell to consumers for money!

And it's becoming more and more obvious that video games are being hijacked by politics and nonsense movements that only work to segregate us more than we are. Are their shallow people? Yeah. They are everywhere, including everyone reading this and myself. To a degree, we are all that way! And Bioware isn't gonna change this is any way!

joethetimelord2987d ago

And apparently they got jobs at Bioware making awful character models based on actual models.

I'm pretty sure that you can edit the character's face anyway at the character creation screen right? Would suck if you couldn't :I

Also the asari girl doesn't look so bad except not a fan of her face paint on her eyes. Looks weird and ruins her look.

And to me they don't look ugly they look average, which might have been something they were going for.

Summons752987d ago

The should be a character creation in typical Bioware fashion...but they also don't have the best character creation :/ The Asari looks cool but her name is Pee...bee but still who names a character Pee.

2987d ago
Christopher2986d ago

The obvious reason for the 'Peebee' nickname is because her romantic liason will be an NPC whose name starts with a 'j'.

The_Sage2987d ago

They look well below average for the town I live in.

For All Its Flaws, Mass Effect: Andromeda's Approach to Romance is Something ME4 Can Learn From

While Mass Effect: Andromeda was let in several key areas, one of its approaches to romances is something Mass Effect 4 should consider revisiting.

I hope Mass Effect 4 ignores the inferior prequels and instead closely follows the far superior Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition.

anast96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

Mass Effect 4 should just make Mass Effect 1 but better with current tech. Fans would be happy. As far as romance, they should take notes from the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Ristul95d ago

Later Bioware games have to little build up. You can have a normal conversation and all of a sudden BAM! The character you talk to becomes super flirty.

TricksterArrow95d ago

Reminds me of Baldur’s Gate. I wanted to practice some magic and Gale made it super weird. Not even gonna mention Astarion.

gold_drake95d ago (Edited 95d ago )

iii dunno about that.

the only really great and funny dating partner, is that outlaw guy anyways haha he was funny as hell.

other than that, i found every character to be very annoying.

Shout out to Keri the Asari reporter. Current relationship status be damned as she's game either way. Anything for a good story. 🤣

Bro missing companions: Legion, Grunt, Samara/Morinth, Javik, EDI

anast137d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine137d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast137d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman137d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

anast136d ago

Liam lol I can't stand that dude.

BioWare Thinks Mass Effect Andromeda Was Better Game Than Reception Suggested

BioWare thinks Mass Effect: Andromeda was a better game than what reception suggested; taught the studio not to shoehorn open-world without any meaningful content in it.

I played it and it wasn't as bad as people said. Is it in the 8-10 range? No.

It's a 6-7, which means it's a solid game.

LordoftheCritics172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

Veilguard and Andromeda are of similar level to me.
6 to 6.5 ish

Though I think i enjoyed Andromeda's combat and sense of scale a little bit more.

XBManiac171d ago

Veilguard has better graphics.

neutralgamer1992172d ago

I agree with you It was a 6.5 type game. Gameplay was solid everything else was lacking. Playing at launch with all the issues was just absurd. EA could have let the developers keep patching and fix the game but they stopped just like they did with anthem. It’s crazy to think multi billion dollar publishers can’t afford to keeping patching their games get medium size developers can support the game for years

But when you have android wilson running the company what else can we expect.

OtterX172d ago

Except 6-7 doesn't translate as solid. 6 means a bit flimsy, but still good/enjoyable if you can look past the flaws. 7, a little less flimsy, and enjoyable. 8-10 would be "solid".

But I get your point. I skipped the game entirely, so I don't have an opinion on it.

H9172d ago

I played this game back when I wanted to give every game I bought a fair chance and finish it, it was the reason why I stopped doing so, god the game was bad

TheNamelessOne172d ago

I actually enjoyed Andromeda. It wasn't a 10/10, by any means, but I played it years after the fact, after a lot of patching, and I had a good time with it.

anast172d ago

Same, I enjoyed it too. I might even replay it soon.

TheNamelessOne171d ago

Might do the same, honestly. Went through the trilogy a couple months back.

raWfodog171d ago

I liked it as well, and also played it for the first time over a year after it was released. The original trilogy was a better story overall IMO but I still enjoyed Andromeda.

lellkay172d ago

The game is so unbelivably bad, it's laughable.

pwnmaster3000172d ago (Edited 172d ago )

It really wasn’t. Well for me nd I’m a big fan of the series.
Was it mass effect standard? No
But overall I thought it was a decent game.
6-7/10.

Armaggedon172d ago

You might want to try playing a truly bad game. Go boot up two worlds or gollum to get the perspective you need

MatrixxGT171d ago

Wow, two worlds…red ringed my 360.

Armaggedon171d ago

Lol. Its one of the only games that I have experienced buyers remorse with. The only one I can think of is riders Republic.

matt139172d ago

So delusional, the title was an embarrassment to the original trilogy. it’s the equivalent of 2042 to the battlefield franchise.

thorstein172d ago

2042 had a redemption arc and what exists now is a pretty good FPS.
