Why does Mass Effect: Andromeda´s female characters look so ugly?

I (Robin Ek, TGG) couldn´t help to notice that the female characters in Bioware´s upcoming action/RPG game "Mass Effect: Andromeda" looks absolutely terrible. So here´s my take on the matter.

You want to create a world were people don't look like real people and everything is a fantasy but you think SJW need to get a grip on reality. it's also like that in Dragon Age: Inquisition too, all the female romance choice is either masculine, dominating, or ugly af, almost all key characters are woman, and all the dumbs and comedic characters are male.

Bioware's character design division is controlled by SJW, if you don't believe me check back here after ME:A released. Hell, you can already see it in the trailer, the commander is a woman.

In DA:I, it did bother me to see so many female characters in powerful positions despite the fact the setting is supposed to be medieval European where racial and gender prejudice is supposed to be the norm.

It makes more sense to see more equality in Mass Effect series because this takes place in the future where we usually assume that there is much less racial and gender discrimination. The only problem is Speciesism.

Regarding romance options, I do agree that it did feel pretty limited for the straight male human protagonist. The choices were either Cassandra or Josephine. Clearly most would prefer Josephine but her model is just as weird shaped as this female Andromeda protagonist.

I agree with you completely. EA is a multi-million dollar company that releases more titles throughout the year as opposed to some of the smaller publishers. This in turn, puts them in a more subjective position with media coverage. If they appeal to a broader audience by including characters that relate to all sorts of different people of shapes, colors, and forms they're less subjective to anti-feminism or SJW criticism. This in turn puts them in a position to profit off of a broader audience.

I just hate when they start trying too hard and make characters that are no longer believable in the subject matter. Their latest Need For Speed comes to mind for me. While the game technically played okay I had a hard time feeling immersed because I was forced to watch unskippable live action scenes every ten minutes with people that I couldn't stand, let alone consider believable characters for that type of setting and subject matter.

Did you read the article? Yes, there are ugly people and good looking people, and in between etc. But Bioware seems to have no issue getting the modeling right for male characters, and had no problem with Miranda beforehand. Now, it's as if it is being done on purpose and this article brings in a lot of evidence to prove the point.

These are video game and I take no issue with representing all types of people. I'm not that great looking either. But it's also a product that we buy! This isn't a comparative journal piece or something that is going to change societal norms. It's a product being made to sell to consumers for money!

They did that with Shepard in the original trilogy too. Was painfully obvious when femshep was walking down the hallway at the beginning on the way to her trial in ME3. She walked just like the male counterpart, and the gate was extremely masculine.

ME is a game rich in lore, with solid game play, but the animations were never one of it's strong suits.

I think it's rather juvenile to judge part of a game based on the attractiveness of a character. How does that affect gameplay? And if the main reason you're playing a game is cause you think one of the characters is hot, that's sad to me. Every game is art, all art is different and unique and not everyone classifies the same exact design and look as "attractive". To call these character designs "ugly" is an insult to the artists behind such a great franchise.

If Bioware indeed chose to make the characters more like the average looking person that is their artistic license ofcourse, but it could affect the game's appeal for some. Thats why most main characters in big movies and games are attractive, it helps with sales.

I believe it is down to the culture at Bioware rather than the skill of the artists, so it is more of a creative choice to give every female character a man jaw. They even made Miranda in ME2 look more like Michael Jackson than Yvonne Strahovski.
Video games are meant to be an escape from reality, where gamers can save the world and get the girl (or boy), and usually the characters are meant to be an idealised version of beauty. So the potential love interest should be the woman, or man of your dreams. Looking at the women in Mass Effect Andromeda, I'd like to quote Tom Hardy's character Eames from Inception "You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling."

I've restarted the game before after several hours of game play just because what looks good in the character creation screen looks bad in the actual game with different lighting or due to some of the animations. Finally settled on a really good femshep, then they screwed it up between ME2 and ME3.

My maleshep play through was pretty much the original character model though. Think I just changed the hair, because all the other options looked absolutely rediculous. The lack of options, and weird way they handle the facial structure has always been a hallmark of Bioware games.

Which makes me wonder why there's an article complaining about it.

Well "Ugly" is a very subjective term. Just because the final computer model doesn't look exactly like a super model, does that make them "Ugly?" Because Bioware games all have materials and rendering effects that look really ugly on human skin. A vast array of factors including lighting, materials, shadows, the mesh, the textures, the maps, the individual abilities of the person who cleaned up the scan/sculpted the character, the notes that person was given from superiors, and the individual preferences of the person looking at it can affect how a 3d character looks.

Oh wait no I guess it's the sinister SJW conspiracy that's... doing something. There is no nuance nor complexity in the world, everything is determined only by political leanings and twitter.
