Demon Souls was niche and look how that turned out. BLOODBORNE alone on one console sold more than 3 million at this point and all Souls games are popular now.

Demons was the best. When I first got that game there was no wiki or anything. We were guinea pigs with absolutely no direction. That game had the best community and the most enjoyable online for a long long time. It spawned a dynasty. Like the Tuck Rule game. Right, LexHazard79? 😆

until dawn was a niche kind of game that also saw great sales due to strong word of mouth. I never looked at the game much during it's production, because I thought it was just some sort of cheesy horror game in the vein of Silent Hill or similar games, which have never been a huge favorite of mine(although I accept they're popular among others), but word of mouth made me try it, and it's one of my favorite games this gen....in a genre I care very little about(horror).

It's funny how the only difference between niche and popular is simply a matter of discovery. Things like Angry Birds or Candy Crush could have bombed big time, while any number of other games with the same premise, or even the exact same game play, could have hit it big. The only difference, word of mouth, and social awareness that the game existed and may appeal to someone.

I will never forget the time my brother and his friend was talking about this game Demon Souls, an action RPG witch I never played a RPG before but the sound of the game was incredible. I never ended up beating Demon Souls but boy oh boy did I destroy Dark Soul 1 and later ones. It is just incredible what a game can do that no one expected, I just think about a modern day shooter or action adventure game that is similar to Dark Souls (not in setting but concept).

I think a lot of gamers nowadays are much more savvy when it comes to their purchases. Back in the day it wasn't unheard of for people to buy a game based on an advert they saw once, or the cool-looking box art. Today, gamers have such a breadth of information on the internet, and social media makes it easy for word of mouth to spread. This is exactly how Demon's Souls went from a dead-on-arrival oddity, destined to be forgotten, to spawning one of the most well known series in the gaming industry.

I don't think you can call Souls games or even Nioh Niche anymore. While it's not a game for casuals or all it's above what should be considered niche. I'd hate to go as far to call it mainstream but these games kind of are now.

As others have said, Demon's Souls was niche. So much so that a good portion of gamers who were interested actually ordered the English, Hong Kong version knowing that Sony would not publish it stateside. I did and I know many others did as well. Even with Atlus later announcing the rights to publish in the US it was somewhat niche to but over time Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, Bloodborne and games like it now, such as Nioh are no longer niche.

You remind me of every hack writer in the 90's that referred to every single First Person Shooter as a Doom Clone. Souls style of play is a sub genre in the RPG world. Not everything in that genre is a copy or I guess Saints Row is just a GTA rip off. Expect to see it more and more in the years to come.

1) Team Ninja (Creators of Nioh) have no access to From Software's (Creators of Demon souls, Ds and BB) Assets. if they had stolen their assets liek you claim they have. Sony wouldn't have published the game, wouldn't have ok'd the game to be released, and probably would be doing everyuthing in their power to make sure that Koei Tecmo never has a chance to steal another comapnies assets again.

2) Literally - in a literal manner or sense; exactly.

Learn to use words properly, and dont go claiming companies are stealing assets from other companies.

3) Assets =/= gameplay style
Assets = actualy objects aka swords, armors, characters. since when has Dark Souls, BB or Demon souls had a large Samurai area i didn't see

5)People didn't ask for them to make the game easier, it was an issue with the stamina bar from the alpha that would cause you to lock up for like 2-3 seconds. that has been tweaked.

This game really came out of nowhere for me. I had not been following it at all. And sadly I dont have time for it right now, my backlog is insane and Im sorry but everything will have to take a backseat to Horizon.

I think you would really like it. I know you're a big fan of the Tenchu games like I am and this game has some similarities. Obviously it's not a stealth game like Tenchu, but the atmosphere, setting and music definitely remind me of Tenchu quite a bit.

Definitely like the whole feudal Japan setting. I know what you mean, watching footage made me ache for Tenchu. I played Aragami which was pretty cool, a nice placeholder but it just makes me want Tenchu even more. But play it if you havent.

And the soundtrack in Tenchu was a hugh highlight, very well done.

Strangely Tales of Berseria was sold out when I bought it on Thurs of release week. Stock came quick though and it shipped Sat, Either way hope Nioh sold well, I am going to wait on it for a little while due to all the big releases and the alpha (maybe beta) just did not do much for me

In Ni-oh's case they most likely underestimated demand. That said it's safe to say Nioh will probably sell a couple of million.

I always buy physical when possible.
My download speeds are incredibly slow at my house. Say I bought a AAA game digitally on either my XB1 or PS4 I would literally have to wait a few days before I could play it, and that includes leaving it on downloading whilst I'm at work in the day. Same for a lot of people, the internet infrastructure is simply not good enough in many parts of the UK and USA.
Also digital AAA games are way too expensive, in the UK you could get a physical copy for about £10 less than the download price.
Also you can't trade in /sell digital copies or swap/share them with friends. I'm playing Yakuza 0 at the mo, once I complete it it's going straight to my local CEX for credit.

I usually get half way through the Souls games then move on to something else.

Ok guys here is the truth. Many game companies are shortening their supply of games for launch only. They want people to preorder their games instead of buying it without the preorder. So these games like Nioh will be in temporary short supply during launch. I think it's BS, but at least you can download the game though.
