id Software: Async Compute will be a major factor in all engines across all platforms

John from DSOGaming writes: "A lot has already been said about Async Compute. And after everything we’ve seen so far from NVIDIA’s side (including its latest GPUs), it appears that AMD will triumph in all games supporting it. Not only that, but it appears that more and more engines will support this specific feature of DX12 and Vulkan."

AMD is innovating in a way with features but Nvidia has better design and quality.

i hope to see more people utilize this, because doom imo looks and plays amazing. especially on the consoles.

Razzer2859d ago

I'm running Doom on high settings (1080p) with a frame-rate hovering around 100 on a less than average R9 280x. I've never seen performance like this on any of my games. A bit mind-blowing.

Kleptic2859d ago

Completely agree. I'm pretty cpu bound most of the time for any game. Still using an A10 6800k w/ igpu disabled, but OC'd to 4.8ghz. I can get by, could still hold a little over 60fps in BF4 multiplayer...but, I expected Doom to hurt more on the gpu side...

I'm using a 280x, too. 1150/1600 clocks and Doom was completely playable and find with ogl. mins around 55 on high settings, other than some really bizarre spots in certain levels where it would dip into the 40's. With vulkan, I'm averaging over 100...On ultra, averages in the low 70's even with full shadow detail (the big killer as far as settings go it seems like). I've left it on Ultra for everything else, but bumped that down to medium, as now it never mins below 60. Very happy with the bump, as I'll be upgrading a cpu before gpu and was hoping that the card still had some life in it...definitely does.

What a dumb article. It doesn't even explain what Async is. Am I just supposed to know?

Deano19882859d ago (Edited 2859d ago )

Why would they detract from what they are trying to put forward by wasting a load of time exlplaining something you can read up somewhere else if not on their own site.

bulletskillutwo2859d ago (Edited 2859d ago )

Asynchronous compute allows all GPUs based on AMD’s GCN architecture to perform graphics and compute workloads simultaneously.

joeorc2859d ago (Edited 2859d ago )

@bulletskillutwo
Exactly.

Now also there is something even more significant added in there many also are overlooking about this ..do you know what : " Big LiTTle Technology" is being deployment now not only in smartphone, tablets and smart TV's , but also our current game consoles like the Xbox one and PS4 use such , but you cannot access the little satalite processors in the Little configuration.. But next few years there will be accessible on other future systems..

This is going to be very important, because compute clustering is now going standard moving forward..Small cluster compute systems inside a much larger compute system, but the little compute clusters can run in background or compute its very own compute and graphics compute workloads separate or in tandem with the much larger big system.

Key point being , right now many smartphone QuadCore or OctoCore or Deca Core chipset already are Big LiTTle configured Systems, and now these same systems are being included into the Desktop, tower and game console systems we are playing on now..right now it's being dedicated to just security..a very small isolated compute cluster..but soon more robust ones will be included, and not just one or two but more than 4 , or Even 8 of these small LiTTle compute cluster chips mounted directly onto the mobo.

Here is the information if you and others are interested:
https://community.arm.com/g...

Since they are going also into servers configuration systems itself..it makes for advantages to now combine pin to pin x86 & ARM Soc's to such a configuration.. Hell AMD was going to do such with its Puma, but global foundries made it cost prohibitive.. But other companies are looking to add in..

One of reasons many, but take a look at this..

https://youtu.be/ei9uVskwPN...

Very robust compute server for power efficient and low costs to setup.

dcbronco2859d ago

It also makes them more efficient by having all CPU cores communicate with the GPU to keep the GPU fed constant work. GPUs can have a lot of idle cores because the CPU can't feed it assignments because only one core was talking to the GPU in the past.

AMD ftw!

LostDjinn2859d ago (Edited 2859d ago )

"this specific feature of DX12 and Vulkan"...?! WTF?
What's OpenCL? What's the PS4 running on? Apple run what again? Hell, do you even know what the hell you're talking about?

Async compute is api and hardware dependent. There are many APIs and many versions of different hardware that are capable. What you've written (excluding id software's input) is little more than chin poo.

Edit: @OpenGL. Yeah it is good.

OpenGL2859d ago

Glad to see AMD's design and work with the consoles is finally paying off on PC.

MyDietEqualsGames2859d ago

I've missed the informative posts you and VulcanProject would post, such as the ones posted over the years on this site.

I hope to see you guys more on topics such as this.

OpenGL2859d ago

Fire Strike doesn't use async and it's a synthetic benchmark supported by Nvidia, it's hardly more credible than actual game benchmarks.

I'm really curious to see what he's going to do. It seems like a GTA-style game, but I wonder how it'll differentiate itself.

Goodguy011h ago(Edited 1h ago)

A new studio making a AAA game. Yea, that'll go well. I still think new studios should only make small games for a few years to build up teamwork and trust within.

shinoff21832m ago

That's a good point but if they have the talent it may not be needed

Hypercharge Unboxed Dev Saddened By Claims It'll Be 'Dead' Without Xbox Game Pass

One of the big Xbox releases heading our way in May 2024 is the long-awaited Hypercharge Unboxed, which is finally bringing its "first and third-person shooter action figure game" to Xbox consoles on Friday, May 31st.

Sadly, ahead of launch, the game's official Twitter (or "X") account has been highlighting the "trolls" who are claiming that because it's not launching on Game Pass, Hypercharge Unboxed is already set up for failure on Xbox.

helicoptergirl1d 5h ago

It's horrible what people will say, but the truth might be harsh. There is a good chance it might not do well on Xbox if it's not on GamePass. There is a strong possibility that is the case. We'll see.

When it launches on Playstation in the future you can rest assured it will sell much better. The devs have confirmed it's coming to Playstation in the future.

"It is built in the Unreal Engine 4. The game was released on the Nintendo eShop on January 31, 2020 and on Steam on April 27, 2020. The development of Hypercharge: Unboxed for the Xbox platform was officially announced on July 16, 2022, with the developers also confirming future support for the PlayStation."

ZeekQuattro1d 4h ago

I remember having this on my radar years ago for the Switch but never pulled the trigger on it. Crazy it's still not on PlayStation yet.

northpaws19h ago

And that's the problem of GamePass.

JEECE19h ago

Unfortunately once people are conditioned to expect to get something as part of a subscription they already pay for, they are unlikely to buy it a la carte. Some games, including this one, now look like "Gamepass Games" to a huge chunk of the Xbox audience. Maybe this game will buck that trend, and I wish them luck, but I'd imagine they'll have a rough go trying to sell this game on Xbox.

shinoff218318h ago

Hopefully their game not selling on Xbox doesn't stop them from bringing it to ps. I can't imagine why a developer would go Xbox first if their not on gamepass. Good luck to them though.

JEECE18h ago

Yeah I can't figure that out either. I mean I understand why you go there first if you get a Gamepass payday, but if you are just trying to sell copies it doesn't make sense. Fewer users overall, and a smaller percentage of those users are willing to buy indie games a la carte.

Jingsing16h ago

Yeah, I can't understand it either unless there is some deep routed fan-boyism from the developer, which isn't very clever if you are trying to make a living. Fatshark is a perfect example of a developer sending their games to die on Xbox and they kept doing it.

Jingsing16h ago

British guy saying Xbox is his dream console doesn't really sit right does it. 5 generations of PlayStation in the UK and you haven't figured out what console is going to make you the most money. That is the mistake you've made.

JEECE7h ago

I wonder how old he is and when he got into gaming. For a certain segment of gamers, it can be difficult to overstate how influential the Xbox 360 was.

Jingsing2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Fair, but by the end part of the 360 it was a pretty much a damp squid and then they've had two terrible generations of consoles after the 360 and still sticking with Microsoft and calling it your dream console at this point is for the birds. His game launched on Switch first now Xbox. It seems he has some preference for all platforms before PlayStation regardless of financial outcome. That isn't to say they won't do a PlayStation release. Also the UK was pretty much instrumental in launching PlayStation from a software perspective.

Epic Games Faces $1.2 Million Fine Over "Unfair Practices," Plans to Fight Back

Epic Games is facing a $1.2 million fine by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets over "unfair practices" in the Fortnite shop.

Sciurus_vulgaris1d 12h ago

It might be cheaper to simply pay the fine. Fighting said fine could cost millions due to court and lawyer fees. Fortnite generates well over a 100 million in each month, so Epic has plenty of cash.

franwex1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

But if they did pay it, then they are basically admitting that they did something they weren’t supposed to be doing. If they fight it, they may win and continue to have a sense of urgency for their micro transactions thus making more money long term.

Goodguy0120h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Meaning more suits to follow from others if they don't fight as well.

Not a fan of Epic nor fortnite and their micro transactions. But the game is heavily supported and is free to play, all store items are completely cosmetic.

1d 2h ago
Furesis23h ago

I'd fight back too. These are kinda meaningless reasons to fine someone like really for THAT. It's like they just wanted to make money or something.

Sephiroushin13h ago

There is a law for something, but even if its stupid follow it because if you break it you pay for it; if they knew they cant place a “buy now” in NL then just dont do it!
