Bioware Right to Criticize Rumored Sony PS4K Console

Anthony Snellings of GamersFTW writes, "It’s going to be an interesting year in the console wars.

There are some big technological advances ready to shake things up for gamers and developers alike. Virtual reality, once a cheesy 90s movie concept inexpertly simulated in some of the crappiest consoles ever built, is looming over the horizon, and ultra high definition televisions are starting to catch on, offering consumers premium viewing experiences at a slightly less than premium cost. With Sony looking to stay ahead this generation, it’s no surprise that the internet has been rumbling with talk a new updated consoles."

PS4K a potential game-changer or end of Sony find out on the next episode of N4G!!!!

Erik73572936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

Can we just stop with this stupid ps4 4k crap?

Like it won't happen unless Sony comes out with a 1500+ dollar console and why would they do that when their VR can't even go past 1080p! This rumor is so stupid it's not even funny!

If we get a ps4 that can run better looking games it'll be $400 and the current ps4 will have a $100 price cut. If it's a big enough upgrade that it'll run games that run at 30fps on current ps4 to 60fps ( only a select few of games at that) and it'll be $500-$600 dollars then depending on what games it can run at 60! Of course in this scenario the current ps4 would of course get a $100 price cut and be $300 as well with the "60fps" ps4 being at $500-$600.

But of course all of this could be bullcrap but I could see Sony wanting to release atleast a slightly beefed up ps4 to compete with NX or be more powerful than it.

Microsoft probably won't do anything and it kinda just looks like there done with consoles and trying to make Windows 10 appeal to gamers and have its own xboxlive eco system.

_-EDMIX-_2936d ago

Fries- "Like it won't happen unless Sony comes out with a 1500+ dollar"

Not really. They could mean 4K upscaled, the could also mean 4K display, movies, but not games. Who knows.

Omegasyde2936d ago

I think its true.

All it is a ps4 with upscaler to 4k..... everything else will be the same. I dont own a 4k tv so its doesnt apply to me.

Mr Pumblechook2936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

Article headline is not quite honest. In the original Gamespot article, Greg Zeschuk is not talking specifically about PS4K, he is talking about any .5 console and gives an example using the Xbox DVD.

The fact that he is talking openly about it means he has not signed an NDA therefore Bioware haven't seen a .5 console! It doesn't mean they don't exist but this is interesting because it means one of the biggest RPG studios haven't seen it. Either 0.5 is not happening or is perhaps not so near.

SaveMeJebus2936d ago

My favorite color is chips.

uth112936d ago

I agree it's a stupid idea, but that doesn't mean it's not true though. Console history is littered with bad ideas that became products or misleading product marketing.

The Atari Jaguar comes to mind, marketed as the first "64-bit" system, yet only had one coprocessor with a 64-bit bus and wasn't truly 64-bit. The PS4K could be marketed as the first 4K console, even if it doesn't deliver a true 4K experience.

It could do this in several ways:
1) 4K upscaler (TVs can generally do this though)
2) Less demanding/Indie games play in 4K, AAA games not so much
3) Render games at 1440p and upscale to 4K. It could do this with the rumored 2X GPU power. This would look better than 1080 upscaled, and many people wouldn't notice the difference in all honesty.

Or it could just be 4K for media, but still have the rumored 2X GPU that can play enhanced PS4 games at 1080p.

Satou2936d ago

I think they need to go with 30-50% more power for 900p games to get patched to 1080p, or for VR games to get 90 fps. Add in 4k upscaler, 4k streaming, and SATA III, and you've got a PS4k. I'd buy one.

rainslacker2936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

The only current games that would likely benefit from a frame rate boost would be those that don't have locked frame rates(that sometimes see dips). Most games on console nowadays are designed around the frame buffer pipeline to run their subroutines, so a game would have to be encoded with new pipelines to accommodate more power. At best, you'd see more solid frame rate on games that get dips, but I'm not aware of PS4 having a lot of problems with such a thing.

Patches could of course be implemented with interpolate the frames to allow the subroutines to only hit every other frame though, but it's not quite the same effect.

I doubt either company is going to explore an upgrade path of this nature this gen, and next gen is still up in the air, and ultimately, probably still not worth it for the long term.

@Pumble

Very good point about the NDA's. However, at the same time, Sony may not have any real info to give out to devs yet which would warrant such a thing. But that does lend credence to the fact that this is likely a ways off and not for the immediate future if it is a thing.

nitus102936d ago

You should be aware that the 4K BluRay specifications were only ratified just on a year ago and it is only now that the three layer BluRay players are hitting the market.

It is quite possible that the so called PS4K will support the new 4K BluRay standard which would probably mean some minor performance improvements.

Also the costs between the PS4 and the PS4K would not be that great, with the PS4K probably costing about US$400 which would put it on par with many of the 4K BluRay players that are appearing on the market.

Even now all PS4's can play 4K content such as Files and certain BluRay's so with exception of adding a 4K BluRay player to the PS4 with the possibility of up-scaling PS4 games not allot will change.

Of course it must be realised that most 4K displays can up-scale as well so the PS4K may not even have a 4K up-scaler.

Assuming the PS4K will have the ability to play 4K games is just a pipe dream since it would increase the price of the PS4K too much not to mention the form factor such as requiring a higher rating power supply and better cooling.

Even now unless you own a PC with a fairly expensive graphics card or cards most so called high end PC's can barely do true 4K gaming.

Assuming the PS4K does play 4K games then Sony would effectively split it's users base which is not a smart business move.

Basically the bottom line is plenty of rumores and not enough facts.

DeadlyFire2936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

I agree Fries I agree.

PS4K/PS4.5 is one of two or three things.
- PS4 SKU with 4K upscaling or HDMI 2.0/HDMI 1.4 support.
- PS5 early test build. Based on Polaris, but in reality PS5 could be on AMD Vega or Navi when its released in 2018 or so. Its wise to test things early.
- PS VR specs. Has anyone actually checked the internal specs on that thing? Its possible it sports some custom modified AMD CPU/GPU tech. Because well its to render things up to 90/120 Hz or 90/120 fps at 1080p. Right?

Also well PSVR is to come with a 2ndary thing to help it display that resolution I do believe Sony said. Here is an exact quote from a site. Said to be the size of the Wii. I Personally believe it could be a small SOC containing AMD Polaris APU tech. As its been said recently at GDC that Polaris 11 ran VR buttery smooth. Therefore no PS4 game enhancements unless its a VR game that works on console and VR then the VR set gives it a boost to reach its minimum fps. Just a thought.
---------------
Although the PlayStation 4 is currently incapable of rendering games at such a high frame rate, Sony’s chief of PlayStation has stated that a software update will address this. It will also be aided by a small additional unit, roughly the size of a Nintendo Wii, which connects to the PS4 in order to convert the headset's visuals for display on a standard TV.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2936d ago

Agreed @Fries. This *expletive* is really getting old.

Unspoken2936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

Sony is going to get blasted if it isn't 4K resolution and they market their console as 4K. And if it is only for movies and media then they completely lost their focus on gamers yet again. First Vue and now this.

No wonder their game library is mediocre and doesn't hold a candle to the PS2 and 3.

Michiel19892936d ago

so everyone has to be quiet and you are the only one who can speak your opinion (and even try to pass it as fact)?

Im glad you got all the sony insights, are you Yoshida's secretary?

jrshankill2935d ago (Edited 2935d ago )

Has anyone really stepped back and thought...

"Would a 4k console really change how much I enjoy gaming?"

Honestly? I'm asking seriously, are people really desperate for 4K console gaming?

Sparta072935d ago

@ fries, I 100% agree with you on everything you said.

Randostar2935d ago

GrubsterBeater2936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

Then it would take 10 articles to slowly confirm or deny the rumor, and in that time period, a PlayStation gaming franchise dies and is then resurrected at least 3 times.

Lol

rainslacker2936d ago

Narrative needs to keep changing so websites can draw this whole rumor out for as many hits as possible.

I've become aware of this trend by watching the days of our N4Gies reruns...which are actually not reruns...but are because they lack any original thought process or meaningful discourse. I feel the gaming press is in a constant state of trying to reboot old stories no one cares about anymore.

EddieNX 2936d ago

Maybe it will just upscale to 4k and play 4k media. if it was massively more powerfull theyd have to ditch the Old Ps4 or make two versions of each game?? confusing

MAULxx2936d ago

My thoughts are that it will still be a PS4 with slightly upgraded hardware. I think it will also upscale to 4k.
Games will run on either machine, orig PS4 or PS4.5 it's just if you have the .5 you'll see some boost in performance. That is depending on how game developers handle it of course. You could see a better frame rate on the .5 or something similar.
The games would play on either system. No one will "need" to upgrade to the .5. It will just be an option to do so. I have no problems at all with that.
This is just my thoughts on this matter. Sony isn't talking about it yet so we'll just have to wait & see.

DeadlyFire2936d ago

Its just early PS5 test build that was leaked with 4K upscaling or another SKU of the PS4 itself. I don't expect we will see final product until 2018 or later if its PS5. Although NX is launching in 2017 so. It would be wise to have a potential next gen product ready to compete with it maybe. PS5 when it exists will likely run every PS4 game as its very likely x86 based and running off the same OS with new hardware under the shell when it comes.

PS4k, PS4.5 will NEVER release. PS4 SKU with some extra quirks for 4K upscaling media like HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 1.4 sure. Production cost might be higher than the norm, but the price will be the same as any PS4 SKU on the shelf. Just with added 4K support marked on the box.

esemce2936d ago

Yeah it will be just a refresh adding a 4k scaler etc, just like when the newer 360's got the HDMI output they were not more powerful but just had added functions.

Juiceid2936d ago

And that alone would be worth purchasing for some people. Anyone looking into getting a 4K blu ray player now would find this machine a tremendous value. And it's Sony movies that are the most available in the 4K market now, I believe.

EddieNX 2935d ago

Exactly! It would be a wise move for sony. Releasing a £500+ beast surely wouldn't be wise

fanboysmackdown2936d ago

Another stupid article on this subject. It's really simple......don't buy it if you can't afford it and if you're gonna be a whiny baby about someone having something better than you, grow up. It's not like your PS4 will all of a sudden be obsolete.

Aenea2936d ago

And here's another one who doesn't understand it's not just about consumers willing to buy a new PS4 model alone...

franwex2936d ago

What is it about then?

uth112936d ago (Edited 2936d ago )

If that's all it was about I wouldn't be upset. What upsets me is the likely possibility that the PS4 will get crappy scaled down ports of PS4k games instead of games specifically optimized for PS4, because Sony will want to entice us to upgrade.

This is what we see everywhere else.. Phones, PCs constantly pushed to upgrade.

It's only been 3 years, it takes more than 3 years for most big games to be developed. The PS4 hasn't been fully exploited yet.

esemce2936d ago

Not going to happen, no dev would dedicate resources on a game to add features that only a small minority of the console base can play.

uth112935d ago

So no developer will develop for PSVR then?

rainslacker2936d ago

For me, it's not about not having the funds, it's more that I don't want to see the console development paradigm shift to a continuous cross-gen port mentality.

While I'd likely get the upgraded console at some point, it's just bad for the consumers all around to be stuck in an endless upgrade cycle where neither pieces of kit have the chance to truly show what they are capable of before the next big advancement comes.

Not to mention that the people this would really benefit are a very very small minority at the present time, and won't even be 1/3 of the market come the time we'd likely see a PS5 announcement anyways.

So who exactly does this serve? The very small minority. Which only makes me believe that it's not a thing, because it makes no sense for Sony to alienate so many people with a devisive idea, spend loads of money to do so, and then just go on and do it all over again the next time around.

Way to many reason why this wouldn't be a good idea for the consumer, for Sony, or for the developers, compared to the one good thing that is served to less than 5% of the actual market that currently exists out there for TV's.

Movefasta19932936d ago

I don't want this to happen, just wait another two years 2018 and release a huge upgrade then.5 years is solid, and by then ps4 prob would reach 75 million or more even.

nitus102936d ago

If you are willing to wait two years why bother with 4K. The new 8K displays are hitting the market this year and while initially expensive will drop in price fairly rapidly to the point where 4K will be sidelined.

Actually it's a bit more complicated than that. When you view a screen your face should be far enough away from the screen such that you can not see or can hardly see the pixels. Not only that but to avoid eye-strain your eyes should be able to take the in the whole screen rather then flick from side to side. A curved screen does help in this situation.

As an example and assuming the appropriate content you would be really hard pressed to tell the difference between a 6 inch 1080p and a 4K screen although you can definitely tell the difference once you increase the screen sizes.

Now lets compare 70 inch screens all being fed with appropriate content. For your eyes to take in the screen comfortably you need to sit back a reasonable distance. Having a curved scree means you can be comfortably closer. Either way you can pick up the differences between 1080p, 4K and when you can look at one 8K, however those differences are not as significantly different when people compared 720p to standard definition.

See the following for more information on this: http://www.crutchfield.com/...

Movefasta19932936d ago

I don't even care about 4k to be honest with you,i just want all my games to run at a locked 60 and look great at 1080.

The problem with 4k is,if they do go that route, then it's back to 30fps again.

Maxor2936d ago

This is a day one for me. Anything over the current gen PS4 is much needed. The system is getting old fast.

EddieNX 2936d ago

In one what way? Gaming is about games not tech. The Ps4's graphics are great unless you're a PC elitist. Not everybody drives Bughatti's.

Maxor2936d ago

Not everybody drive Corrolas. Its not all about the graphics either, it's about the performance. Play The Uncharted Collection in 60 fps. Now go play any typical game in that garbage 30 fps which the PS4 struggles to maintain. The difference is brutal.

At this point I'll take any performance or upgrade over the current gen, even if all it does is to keep a stable 30 FPS.

superterabyte2936d ago

@Maxor 'Typical game' defined as what exactly? The truth of the matter is that the PS4 runs most games perfectly fine and the lack of power is greatly exaggerated. Also your analogy doesn't really work as a Corrolla is a perfectly capable car which'll get you where you need to go as easily as a Bugatti will.

esemce2936d ago

They are great unless you are also a PC gamer and have gotten used to the fluidity of a locked 60fps.

Germany72936d ago

Dumb comment, again, it's not a surprise anymore.

kraenk122936d ago

You're seriously using the Uncharted collection as an example?! Have you even seen the latest Uncharted 4 video?!

Bolts2936d ago

UC 4 is 30 FPS with 60 FPS multiplayer. In some games dat 60 FPS is a huge difference. It really makes you feel like you have a powerful system. I would take performance over scale and graphics over any day of the week. If the PS4k is real and if it does offer performance upgrades then I'm buying.

Just consider how much time you spend on your PS4. It's totally worth it. Plus I have badass 4K TV :)

BioWare Could be Working on More than Just Dragon Age Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4

Earlier this year, BioWare was hit with layoffs as part of a downsizing of parent company Electronic Arts, but fans have been reassured that the next Mass Effect game hasn’t been impacted. Likewise, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development is still churning along, with BioWare putting it at the forefront of its focus and rumors suggesting that it could launch sometime later this year. Fans might be getting another look at the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf at the Summer Game Fest in June.

If the recently posted job offering for a temporary development manager is any indication, BioWare could have yet another surprise up its sleeve for when Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf are nearing completion. This mystery BioWare video game could truly be anything, from another spin-off of its two major properties to something entirely new. All there is to go on at the moment is a vague mention in the job posting, and it might still be some time before BioWare is ready to confirm any new games in its pipeline.

So a studio that spent years on anthem then this dragon age thing is now also working on another ip along with mass effect,

You think they would be worried that there brand has been on 3 major screw ups

Dragon age 3 launched broken with the frostbite engine yes its a good game but you can see in the late game how rough it was

anthem......

Mass effect 4 well that dev team was fired so yeah.....

They should make sure this new dragon age is a goat instead of putting more work on the table

bababooiy24d ago

Bioware today is like 150 poeple i dont see how they are seemingly working on all these projects at the same time.

Michiel198924d ago

Inquisition wasn't broken, it just had some flaws and on the contrary it also had some strengths. If you call inquisition a major screw up then idk what to say.

That said with what happened to the study since then and now, I'm not really confident that their next game will be any good.

just_looken24d ago

If you played it fully to get plat like me back in its novemeber launch window you had that castle with empty area's endgame missions not there or working and a mp that was made around loot box grind like the mass effect mp.

Its hard to explain to those that played it years later after they tossed out the dlc/patch's

Michiel198923d ago

entitled much? I played it at launch too. Why you even platted it if it was a "major screw up"?
It was good enough for you to sink 100 hours in but also a complete fuckup at the same time, make up your mind.
So either you like shitty games or you're just talking out of your ass.

RaidenBlack24d ago

Well just wanna say, Archetype Entertainment is the new BioWare, composed of mainly ex-BioWare vets.
And they're developing Exodus (starring Matthew McConaughey), a new sci-fi RPG (spiritual successor to Mass Effect, dare I say?)

CantThinkOfAUsername24d ago

I hope it's a single player game with Anthem's gameplay mechanics.

Becuzisaid24d ago

They're owned by EA. What makes you think that they wouldn't publish for PS5? Shoot, if your fridge could connect to your bank account EA would try to release it for that if they could!

Double_O_Revan24d ago

How about they focus on those games and not over extend themselves? We don't need another Anthem.

Becuzisaid24d ago

Bioware died after Inquisition (some would even argue after ME3). They are no longer the same company.

New Mass Effect Game Teased for N7 Day, and It Shows a Mysterious Individual

Today is known as Mass Effect N7 Day, and BioWare has released what looks to be teasers for the new Mass Effect game.

Snookies12170d ago (Edited 170d ago )

We really need another solid Mass Effect entry. It's a real shame that such a legendary franchise was left off with such a blemish to its overall astounding track record. Andromeda was just not it, don't know what they were thinking there.

-Foxtrot170d ago

Surprised it got a subtitle

I thought after Andromeda they’d have kept to the numbers so people wouldn’t think “oh another spin off”

Unless Shepard returns

Obscure_Observer170d ago

"Unless Shepard returns"

After ME3, Shepard should f* off

Stanjara169d ago

Put a chick in it and make her gay.

Ethereal169d ago

Yes! One of my all time favorite trilogies. Hopefully they do ME justice. Andromeda was passable and had bones of a good game but just lacked the depth and intrigue that the originals had.
