BioWare's Focus on Mass Effect & Dragon Age Will Be a Double-Edged Sword

BioWare's focus on what it does best is great news for fans, but it can't be at the expense of innovation and creativity when creating new IPs.

I think people forget how hard it is to start a new IP and how having two back-to-back successes with new IPs, let alone RPGs, is not normal.

I think people also forget that basically all if not entirely all the old talent at Bioware left between the Andromeda and Anthem debacles. It's basically in the best interest of those who are there now to try to figure out how to use the existing IPs the best they can to try to maintain any remaining trust in the studio.

chronoforce294d ago (Edited 294d ago )

Perhaps there is a tendency for people to over simplify making new ip but the likes of Baldurs Gate, Mass Effect, DA:Origins, Jade Empire, Kotor and Never winter nights all released in a 10 - 11 year window. The next 10 years saw Anthem as the only major new game.

It can be hard to accept that the smaller and less resourced they were the more able they were to make new ip. Bioware might not make make another new major ip for the next 10 years. We may end up waiting for a new ip only for Bioware to make something silly like they did with Anthem or like Rocksteady is doing with Suicide Squad.

I definitely think Anthem was a huge misstep for them and made them go away from MP/GaaS concepts and just focus on the IPs that they've had success with.

Duke19294d ago (Edited 294d ago )

It’s not like they are pumping these out like COD or Madden. I’ll gladly take another Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

Saying “Yeah but why don’t they do Mass Effect, Dragon Age AND more” is just a silly take

Rikuide294d ago

Jade Empire 2 after that, right? Right?!

Christopher294d ago

I wish, but I think with the resurgence of eastern combat-focused games, probably not. They'll probably focus on the two IPs that got them the most sales. Jade Empire was ahead of its time but also didn't sell that well, sadly.

Muigi294d ago

I don’t care how long it takes for Mass Effect 4.

ChiefofLoliPolice294d ago

I don't care how long it takes for the new ME and DA. Take the time and do it right. I don't want to see another "Anthem" situation.

The only PlayStation dev I care about tbh.

Cacabunga14h ago

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

Stopac6h ago

I too like to look for things in the wrong places.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

jjb198122h ago

Outriders was crap. They slapped that game together and threw in a loot system to get players' attention. This game was absolutely jank and the always online nonsense made it stutter like crazy. People Can't Optimize.

thorstein21h ago

I liked Outriders but I could see where the artistic vision was compromised. The way the industry is now, it wouldn't surprise me that upper management would scrap something that didn't pull in money via gaas, mts, or other means.

Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition Reneges on Promised Content Behind $250 Price Tag

The new Escape from Tarkov Unheard Edition has the community in an outrage after promising exclusive access to the new PvE mode for $250 USD.

Christopher1d 11h ago

$250? Do they not know all the other games that already exist or will be made in the future that can do similar?

SimpleDad1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

This is for the hardcore people that have 2500 h in the game. They basically play that one game the whole year.
Oh and those same people are mad as hell at this... what a way to reward fans of your game and annihilate newcomers.

Read a comment earlier calling it a "special monetization operation." I had to chuckle at that.
