Wii U Exclusive Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Got a Change of Clothes to Hide the Heroine's Cleavage

In the latest Nintendo Direct, Bill Trinen from Nintendo Treehouse and Satoru Shibata from Nintendo Europe (depending on which version you watched) talked about Atlus’ Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (formerly Genei Ibun Roku #FE) mentioned that “the game is based in Japan, so we’re keeping its original voice over track.”

Unfortunately, there is something that isn’t being kept like the original, and that’s the clothes of the characters.

I see a lot of criticisms over clothing censorship. Yeah, it is a stupid change but overall I am not going to boycott a game due to clothing censorship. But if censorship changes the content of a game (such as Fire Emblem Fates' removal of the touching minigame, or Bravely Second's sidequest outcomes being removed), I get very agitated.

Abriael3386d ago

I'll buy it too, because I'm a sucker and the Wii U is region locked. But censoring this kind of stuff (while leaving exactly the same stuff in other parts of the game) is ludicrous.

PeaSFor3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

i can see her naked wrists, thats an outrage!!

quick, lets put a burka on that abomination.

....seriously, this crazy censorship is getting out of control.

Stealth20k3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

Who cares. A non issue. The game was winning awards in Japan. A games quality is not going to change because of one or two costume changes that most people would not even miss.

And considering this was the original devs who changed it, not even the localization team, it is not even really censorship. They just wanted to change it.

Abriael3386d ago

You mean it won the "Debut with 23k copies on Christmas while the Wii U was selling like hotcakes" award?

According to your usual logic, if it sells all is ok, but this really did rather badly.

Of course, that logic is flawed to begin with, so...

Not surprised to see you spring to the defense of censorship as usual (as long as it's Nintendo doing it). Welcome back :D

Stealth20k3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

Won Dengeki's best RPG award. Since when do sales decide what the quality is? I never said it sold well. Fire Emblem sold well and was a review darling and early GOTY contender. This is different from the sales standpoint.

All publishers make changes to Japanese games. I just focus on what we are getting vs the very minor things we are not.

But, you know my stance. Not going round and round again.

Abriael3386d ago

And it'll be interesting to know what one magazine giving it an award in the face of a very mild reaction from actual gamers has anything to do with whether censorship is ok.

Stealth20k3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

The game is going to sell much better in the West than it did in japan. That is for 100% certainty. Change a costume or two in the West is actually less than what usually happens. It just does not matter. There are real things happening in the gaming industry worth getting upset over. Not this.

Abriael3386d ago

The fun thing is that we don't know the extent of the changes. If there's one, it's pretty safe to assume that there will be more.

Considering Treehouse is doing the localization, and the voices will remain in Japanese, I fully expect unprecedented levels of voice/subtitles dissonance.

Philface3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

@Abriael: What should they change in the subtitles compared to the vioces? That is rather a very unlikely assumption as the text in writen an spoken linguage does not show anything that must be taken out.

the problem isn't on WHAT is being censored, its that its being censored. If you wait until its something that you care about thats censored, it will be too late. One of the games they already cut an entire dialog section. Not sure if its by accident or not. In this case, let art, be art... imagine the art world today if we never got to see works by certain renowned artists because of censorship. A shame.

Stealth20k3386d ago

This is not even censorship. These are normal localization changes that happen to 99.999% of JRPG localizations. A few costumes? Nah, still really looking forward to this game. Do not focus on one tree and ignore the forest.

wonderfulmonkeyman3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

"the problem isn't on WHAT is being censored, its that its being censored."

Ignoring context when deciding what's right and wrong, is like saying a father is a murderer who deserves to go to jail, when he shoots his daughter's ex, who invades the father's home with a knife with the intent of harming said daughter.

Yes, it's a bit of censoring, but if you're going to give a fair criticism of it, then you NEED to take what's being censored, and to what extent it affects the rest of the game, into account.

The circumstances, the details, need to be taken into account when passing fair judgement in most issues, and that includes censorship.

Otherwise it's no better than throwing a blanket accusation across the whole thing, and that's a disservice to the game and its producers that ends up lowering sales over a very trivial part of the overall experience.

gamer78043386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

@wonderfulmonkeyman, @Stealth20k

of course always looking at it in context makes sense to a certain extent, it needs to remain legal obviously. It's also well with in nintendo's right as publisher to edit any dialogue, costumes, content of any kind. However that doesn't mean we have to agree to settle and not voice our opinions, which is what some of us our doing. If it doesn't bother you in this instance thats totally fine, i'm just saying be weary of what might come next.

gamer78043382d ago

Bravely sequel for 3ds got an entire class changed and threw out several quests that characters could die in. this is the slippery slope.

MegaRay3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

Again with 99% of games get censorship? Atlus dont censor Persona games. Bamco dont censor Tales or their licensed games. I can keep going, but first I wanna ask, how much is this 1% in your calculator?

Unlees that number is about Nintendo games, then I can see it being true

Stealth20k3386d ago (Edited 3386d ago )

Atlus has made changes in Persona 1-4. Shows how little you know.
In fact, they are famous for how they changed Persona 2. When Persona 3 and 4 were released on PS2 they changed dialogue.

Every tales game has been changed at least in one small aspect.

It is not censorship.

MegaRay3386d ago

They change dialogue to be more natural, they dont censor words, clothes etc. There's a difference between changing dialogue while the meaning is still accurate, and censorning words etc.

Besides, you gave examples of ps2 Era games. I means P4 and its spinoffs since thats the only new Persona released.

Stealth20k3386d ago

Atlus censors words, clothes and plenty of other things. All Publishers do for different regions. That is the way it goes.

You clearly do not know Atlus. The only reason why we got Persona 2 in america at all is because they changed things.

Kalebninja3386d ago

I dont get this one, it wasnt anywhere near as bad as Lin in XCX and the alteration is so minor I dont see what the point was lol.

Hoffmann3386d ago

wtf is wrong with nintendo usa? Is reggie a puritan?

LOL_WUT3386d ago

They have that family friendly image to protect and they know damn well people won't question it. ;)

jholden32493386d ago

I get the whole censorship complaint thing, I do, but at the same time this is getting a little ridiculous.

Soon we'll have petitions and boycotts over a shirt changing colors.

rainslacker3386d ago

Safer to change the color of a characters skin nowadays than their clothing.

'Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE' Lacks Fire Emblem

While Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE is easily recognized as a Shin Megami Tensei spinoff, it fails to present itself as the crossover it is meant to be.

It was way too much idol culture which idk why they thought itd be a great idea for an smt/fe crossover. I honestly wish they just made it to be a highschool/academy style of game like persona. So much potential it had but its whatever. The game was just ok.

CrimsonWing691149d ago

The problem is when this was first announced it was literally Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. All they needed to do was keep the Fire Emblem strategy gameplay and incorporate Shin Megami Tensei elements and aesthetics. Or hell, somehow collide the universes together with Fire Emblem gameplay.

What we got was really out of left field with such a mashup. I think that’s why it’s disappointing for those expecting Fire Emblem in this game.

TheColbertinator1149d ago

I liked TMS but yeah it missed some charm that both series carry in spades

What do you need to know about Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is coming back! In 2020, Nintendo is bringing its collaboration with Atlus to the Switch. As is common with these Wii U ports, a little something extra is being added in for the encore performance. But what should someone expect in general, in the event they missed the RPG the first time around? Well, it is something that is a lot more like Persona than either Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei.

Dang it I thought I was all clever and clicked on the comments to write that.

Well played, sir!

Forgot the whole 'RE5 is racist" because you have a white character killing black zombies in a country mostly populated by black people.

BlackDoomAx2173d ago

Omg, that was really a thing? I played it at the time and it didn't ring my bell at all xD

Chocoburger2173d ago

Unfortunately, yes.
https://www.livescience.com...

Its important to take story context into perspective here. The Umbrella Corporation is taking advantage of the impoverished people of Africa, by performing experiments on them, far away from the eyes of 24/7 newscasters.

Given the context, the game makes sense.

BlackDoomAx2173d ago

Oh yeah, I remember now. There was a movement called 'black zombies lives matter'.

SinkingSage2173d ago

Not on the article because this writer would clearly have agreed with the stance that RE5 is racist, it's pretty obvious by the choice of controversies / words.

DeadlyAzuril2173d ago

The very first example just shoes how retarded the author is.

2pacalypsenow2173d ago

Yeah I looked at the authors picture, and that says everything I need to know about him.

AK912173d ago

This is sadly now a requirement for being a game journo these days.

GOODKylePS2173d ago

Calls people retarded for having an opinion and confuses shoes for shows 🙄

Juusterey2173d ago

It's called a misspelling

DeadlyAzuril2169d ago

What's the problem Kyle, got some sand in your vagina?

corpsemaker2173d ago (Edited 2173d ago )

For me it’s Battlefield 5’s women. Is it really that big of a deal to have both genders represented in a game AND are not forced to play as a female

Iberius2173d ago

I’m not sure it was simply being able to play as a woman per say, but rather (or at least also) the historical revisionism in the story mode, going a bit overboard with the charter design, censoring words and phrases in chat based on race and historical groups.

Oh and that whole don’t like it don’t buy it fiasco. Actually, you could probably find at least ten controversies just with Battlefield 5 : P

AK912173d ago

Ugh multi page article no thanks

zeal0us2173d ago

Jax ending in MK11 was one of the dumbest controversies. People were mad over a non-canon ending.

Silly gameAr2173d ago

Yeah, I was wondering what kind of person would get so triggered over that.

So stupid.
