The video game industry certainly has its usual months when it releases many of the big games that debut each year.

Launching certain titles within the crowded holiday season can indeed hurt a game's chance at selling well. However I think that's the least of Scalebound's potential issues.

In the past Platinum's games and JRPGs haven't sold as well on Xbox consoles, and this game is both. It has a tough hill to climb to be a big success on Xbox One to the level of fellow RPG Fable previously was.

DarXyde3009d ago

That's definitely going to be a challenge. Even with advertising, it's going to be an uphill battle. Given the RPG/Japanese title offering relative to PlayStation, they're basically trying to appeal to that audience with one AAA JRPG. That's pretty optimistic.

In the end, Scalebound just might do well (and I really hope it does as it's the biggest of three reasons I picked up an Xbox One), but I can't imagine it moving Xbox One units. I'm feeling fairly certain the majority of people who will be buying it already own an Xbox One. Halo 5 sold pretty well among people who already owned an Xbox One and did provide a good boost to console sales at launch, but even I'm surprised that it didn't do "early Halo numbers". With that said, best of luck to them with Scalebound.

VoiceMale3009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

U cant imagine the game will move cobsoles yet u said u bought one out of 3 reasons to play this game?????😨....do u see the hypocrisy in ur comment???? Why does a game always have to be about sale sales sales and more sale...why isnt the conversation on i hope the game is good or would help if they added this to the game or so far so good.....

This generation really saddens to to be honest...i hope this isnt the last of consoles cause if it is this is a poor way to send off such a great form of entertainment

DarXyde3009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

I was specific in my wording. I said it was one of three reasons. I would never buy an Xbox One JUST for Scalebound. That is, there were other games I wanted beforehand. The other reasons I bought an Xbox One are Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive, one of which is already out.

I meant I can't see Scalebound being what gets people to buy it in droves. And I think you understood that and are simply being antagonistic.

EDIT: Sales is one of the side qualities. I said I hope it does well. If I'm highly anticipating Scalebound and I say "I hope it does well", it goes without saying I want it to be a great game AND sell well.

Do I really need to be that particular in any discussion with you?

VoiceMale3008d ago

Yea i got that part about one of 3 reasons...but u missed my point, its still a reason....i know u had other reasons like QB and SSO and i get that, but why are u simply ignoring u might be one among many who just needed a 3rd reason like u did and this might be tbat for them just as it was for u....so those needing more to get a console might be more inclined to do so.....am not playing devils advocate here i was just pointing out how subjective we can be...but again no harm done

DarXyde3008d ago (Edited 3008d ago )

VoiceMale,

Who says I'm "ignoring" that possibility? Simply stated, I suggested that "I can't imagine" that scenario. In other words, if it does happen, that woud be treated as an aberration. I'm also a big fan of eastern games and not many would be willing to go out of their way to buy a new console for Scalebound. This is a new IP and Halo 5 has underperformed if we're comparing it to previous entries. It's still done well, just not as well as everyone expected. Scalebound does not have the hype and marketing of Destiny and simply lacks the presence of established IPs because it's a new IP. So when I say I can't imagine a situation where Scalebound causes an Xbox One consumer boom, I mean just that. Justifiably so.

Action RPG fits the Scalebound bill more then JRPG.

The art style is very different to what Platinum games usually does. So is the overall gameplay.

Skyrim/Witcher/Fallout/Fable have all sold well on Xbox.

Yes Platinum Games is a Japanese dev and yes this is an RPG, but this is more an Action RPG... The same reason most people wouldn't call Dark Souls a JRPG. Yes it's a JRPG because they were made in Japan but the general public looks at them and just sees an Action RPG.

BecauseImBatman3009d ago

"Skyrim/Witcher/Fallout/F able"

Difference is there established franchises. I'm sure the game will do well if they release it in the Spring period but it's still a new IP and they always have trouble convincing people to buy at launch. I hope it does well, I'm very interested from what I've seen thus far.

FallenAngel19843009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

@ Opie

A JRPG can be an action RPG. Case in point franchises like Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, Tales of, Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Ni No Kuni, Ys, and Xenoblade are just a few examples of this fact. Even the massive upcoming JRPG FFXV can be classified as an action RPG.

Scalebound still seems to have an art style and gameplay that seems to be a mix between Monster Hunter and Devil May Cry more than anything else. This sounds like a very incredible concept, but those two franchises haven't sold particularly as well on Xbox 360.

Not to mention that since the game is being developed by PlatinumGames it's going to have plenty of Japanese quirks in the title. That's just the their own unique style that's been present in all of their non-licensed games, and this fortunately will never change. For example the main character Drew even has a lot in common with Nero from DMC4.

donthate3009d ago

Like anything, in order to attract people interested in certain genres, you have to deliver the games. If you build it, they will come....

That said, I think ScaleBound caused quite a stir and interest so I think it will be fine, especially since it was pushed and during that time frame the platform size would have grown too.

Cueil3009d ago

it's an Action RPG with a European style dragon... no I don't think that it'll be a hard sell

So MS is actively sharing dev info with outside studios?

And since when have Platinum made a JRPG? Action games with RPG elements is one thing, but a pure RPG?

NeoGamer2323009d ago

The first party console vendors always share dev info with outside studios. It is part of making sure devs have the tools to make the best games possible on their consoles. And it evangelizes the features of the particular console.

This is Platinum's first Action-RPG. But, given how solid their AAA games are I don't think anyone is too worried about it.

christocolus3009d ago

keeping an eye on Scalebound.

_-EDMIX-_3009d ago

Is worth keeping an eye on, one of the best Japanese developers in the industry!

SweatyFlorida3009d ago

Luckily you said "one of", was about to say how From Software is "the" best japanese dev that's currently relevant in the industry :p

_-EDMIX-_3009d ago

Any delay is good if it helps the overall final product. If they are still working on design stuff, I say the delay was worth it.

DarXyde3009d ago

I don't see where your disagrees are coming from. If a delay means the game will be better, I don't see the issue, especially if it's only one. Persona 5, Uncharted 4, and a few other heavily anticipated titles were delayed. Frankly, I don't think it's a bad thing if it means the game ships in a very playable condition.

Too often developers release games before they're ready. Sonic '06, Drive Club, The Master Chief Collection, and Fallout 4 are a few that come to mind. Don't enable this, guys. The Phantom Pain, despite its criticisms, was actually an incredibly smooth experience. I personally have never experienced any glitches outside of Metal Gear Online.

_-EDMIX-_3009d ago

Dummy accounts. Its 1 person disagreeing with my comments. aka a fan lolz

Agreed though, games are just very complex and if something can be done to make the over all product better, I'm all for it. Even if its my favorite series, especially if its my favorite series lol

Yes MGSV's launch was butter smooth, the wait was worth it, they put it an extremely polished product.

I personally don't even remember delays, once the game releases its just such a non-issue.

Khaotic3009d ago

Do people follow you around to disagree with you?

_-EDMIX-_3009d ago

lolz yes. My celebrity has that way with folks.

Someone made a series of new accounts just for the task. Must be hard for them.

like 1 post for me, several steps for them lolz

Khaotic3009d ago

You really pissed someone of lolz

Kribwalker3009d ago

I get the same problem, even if I post factual proof I'll get a tonne of disagrees, haters gonna hate lol

BecauseImBatman3009d ago (Edited 3009d ago )

I noticed you were getting like over 20 disagrees all at once during our conversation. WTF is wrong with people ? And I agree btw, delays are not a bad thing. It's more important for the game to work and it's to a standard quality at launch.

FlexLuger3009d ago

"WTF is wrong with people ?"

too much time on their hands and petty bitter feelings towards other members of N4G whom they dont even know in real life. This is why the agree/disagree tabs must go. It does nothing but takeaway from honest opinions, and dilutes the conversations, debates.

like, if you have more disagrees than somebody else you are somehow wrong. its disingenuous and N4G need to get rid of it.

_-EDMIX-_3009d ago

Agreed and agreed. The agree disagree buttons essentially no longer hold much weight. I could care less if somebody disagrees or agrees I respect more so someone that has great logic and reason behind them disagreeing with a comment.

Even if it disagrees with my own.

FlexLuger3009d ago

21 disagrees with EDMIX for speaking facts? c'mon guys this is getting silly now. To the Mods, please get rid of these aggree/disagree buttons. Im sure you guys would also encourage constructive debate as opposed to blind disagrees that serve no real purpose or anything of value to the discussions. If nothing else it forces people to talk and engage in the discussions. and that can only be a good thing, I reckon.

zerocarnage3009d ago

I don't think scalebound will have issues selling on Xbox. Yes in the past jrpg's have had problems but that's while the majority were still into battlefield, cod and halo. This gen has been a lot different and I think gamers are wanting more different titles on Xbox rather than seeing the same plain faces. Look at tomb raider for instance while it's an old franchise, it was put up against fallout 4, people automatically assumed it was a failure on Xbox one, yet they were wrong.

If there are any lessons to be learnt this generation of gaming, it's not to assume anything as that's your first mistake, secondly that gamers tastes seem to be shifting and thirdly there are millions of gamers on Xbox so at anytime any title can succeed or fail just as it can on any other platform..

I think that if anything mmo's, jrpg's will be widely popular this gen on Xbox one and already we've seen amazing results towards the genre on xb1. If not because of the genre, then deffo because many pc gamers have gone and got them selfs an Xbox one because of the unification Microsoft have done with Windows 10 across there devices and others. Simply the more friends you got to means that all this cross platform gaming that's coming into effect so quickly means that anyone can come sit round your house and you can all jump into fog games together and have fun..

There is a lot going for mmorpg games on Xbox one, the future is lovely to see this at last when for a while last gen it was uncertain to see which developers would risk there franchises on the console. Now there are tons of developers lining up at Microsoft's doors with new and old ideas, with new and old franchises and certainly new and old experiences all bringing us better gaming, instead of seeing all the same few franchises win all the time ie cod, halo, battlefield, forsake, you get that stale picture.

Look at the division, I reckon last gen an alpha or beta would of had no where near the people playing it, people have pre-ordered through the roof and so far despite a lot of so called gamers thinking they have experience in the game, despite a very first alpha great review and now what looks to be an amazing beta. Basically it seems as though the haters have failed there mission towards Ubisoft and the division because whether they like it or not if just goes to show if a game is marketed rite and it has been done rite then it will succeed..

Gamers just need to start changing theretastes a bit more, which by looks of it, seems to be happening on Xbox one.

Forget about Scalebound and Bayonetta 3, Platinum should be working on a Vanquish sequel

Why this criminally underrated shooter should share the spotlight with Platinum’s finest.

ZeekQuattro804d ago

They should be working to getting games out on a timely matter not adding more games to the pile. I used to be a big fan of Platinum but their game turn out rate is atrocious these days. The games I want are no where to be seen and what is releasing is retro looking games no one asked for. I'm all for retro style games but not at the cost of bigger games sitting on the back burner for years at a time.

MIDGETonSTILTS17804d ago

Obvs…. Vanquish is da bomb 🤙

Scalebound Deserves A Second Chance

PlatinumGames wants to bring Scalebound back, and Microsoft should listen.

“Excitement” and “interest” in Scalebound seemed to only occur after it was canceled… However, IO interactive is rumoured to be developing a game involving Dragons for Xbox Studios. So maybe IO Interactive’s title could be branded as Scalebound.

Bathyj804d ago

I agree. The game looked terrible. People only got upset because it's cancellation was a dig at Microsoft but I was with them on this one. Better to cancel a game then release a bad one. Then again someone might have liked it. I don't speak for everyone.

Kados804d ago (Edited 804d ago )

Personally was looking forward to it prior to cancellation. It looked a little rough/janky, but it was still very early in development, so i figured it would improve before launch.

Orpheo804d ago

I think the cancellation was a smart move. The main character looks cool, like Nero from "Devil May Cry 4," but the gameplay looked so boring I was yawning.

phoenixwing804d ago

I like platinum as a dev but let's be honest they were doing their low tier work on the game which they're notorious for. They'll either do S tier perfection work or they'll do whatever to just get by for the contract they have. Maybe that's changed but they were doing low tier for microsoft and microsoft called them out on it and cancelled the project. I don't blame microsoft one bit for doing that. It was basically a whatever project for platinum while they worked on the other game at the time, i forget which one it was but it was just miles better.

MadLad804d ago

Microsoft already owns the IP, has the design docs, and has a playable build. Hand the project off to an internal team or another 3rd party.
Why give a second chance to a team that phoned in development and filtered their funds into other projects?

I like Platinum, but their management can be really shady.

Bringing Scalebound to Xbox Series X Would Remedy One Big Xbox One Gen Mistake

PlatinumGames seems ready to finish Scalebound, and if Microsoft follows through with them, it would be a big boon for the Xbox Series X gen.

Makemit happen MS. You need a game like this as badly as you needed it last gen. Let’s see if they actually care enough to follow through.

Something other than Halo, Forza or Gears……..that’s what.

TravsVoid806d ago (Edited 806d ago )

You couldn't pay me to ever play another Halo, Forza or Gears. Those games were so uninteresting last gen for me I don't know if I will ever get another Xbox (sold my One X) even though I prefer their controller and console features over my PS5. I actually bought a Xbox One even though I already had a PS4 expecting Scalebound and Sea of Thieves to be amazing and we all know how that turned out.
