Something In the Water: My Nightmare of ‘Ecco the Dolphin’

It's not the most likely candidate for scariest game ever, but SEGA's 1992 game didn't half f*ck some of its players up.

The atmosphere of that game was what really did it. I both loved and hated that game when I was younger, but it holds a very special place for me because of that.

Some of the best video game music of all time.

My kid was playing this on an Xbox 360 Sega game that hase like 20 or 30 titles on it. I seen Echo was on there and it brought back memories of me playing it at the retailer Hills. Does anyone remember Hills Department Store? LOL

KosherNostra3517d ago

Fun Fact! Hills Department Store was the first retail chain in America to stock the Nintendo Entertainment System!

Yeah, the one in Lafayette had a dope concession stand up front and some arcade games. Gimme a no salt soft pretzel and some double dragon please lol

Fluid, beautiful and incredibly frustrating at the same time. Ecco the Dolphin is a really unique game, given the scope and message it was trying to portray back on the Genesis. You really had to know what the hell to do though most of the time, or swim around in circles forever because you have no idea how to get past that crystal thing.

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

There’s a good article somewhere on the net showing some of the dev designer documents for this game. The level of detail they put into creating fish, coral, rocks etc was pretty amazing for its time.

Its a classic game that never gets old for. But seriously to hell with Welcome to the machine. That level and the one before it suck.

Definitely missed Giygas from Earhbound 2 on that list. That boss gave me nightmares when I was a kid. Finished the game way later as a grown up and holy cows, the boss still gave me the hebejebes 😂
