Tomb Raider vs. Uncharted and Why PlayStation is the Best Place to Play

It is clear that both series have something to offer, and fans of this particular branch of the puzzle platforming genre should find something to enjoy in both. Fans have undoubtedly picked their favourite, but thankfully PlayStation owners aren't left out of either experience.

Tomb Raider is a lovely franchise and i've high hopes for Rise of Tomb Raider but man this tow games are on complete different levels, Naughty Dog and Uncharted are in another generation compared to competitors !

DarkOcelet3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

I enjoyed both games immensely but the difference between both games in my personal experience is that when i finish any Uncharted game, i immediately play it again.

But in Tomb Raider even though i finished it twice, i didn't immediately do that. I played it after a month later.

Tomb Raider simply doesn't have the amazing replay value
of Uncharted but its still an awesome game. I really hope Lara lighten up more in the future and we get the thousand backflipping double gun baddassery Lara with dinosaurs in the future.

DragonDDark3490d ago

Plus, Tomb raider doesn't really have lots of memorable characters like uncharted.

Concertoine3490d ago

Seriously about lara being boring. Its like they wanted to make the quintessential "strong female character". Which basically constitutes a screaming, panicking hot chick that ends up covered in dirt most the game.

The fact that Tomb Raider tried to reflect on the hundreds of men its protagonist mowed down was its biggest mistake over Uncharted, which has more or less the same gameplay but didn't make that mistake.

81BX3490d ago

Strongly disagree! Both will tell a story of epic proportions.

Godmars2903490d ago

No. Tomb Raider was a franchise that had about two decent games in the PS1 days, floundered for three more releases. Meandered and rebooted a couple of times until the latest reboot, where instead where Laura went from shooting wolves and T-rexes, then a super spy, then a mystic warrior, she's now a torture porn refugee borrowing from Drake's playbook as she becomes Batman. Bat-Laura.

Short version: *This* Laura has only had one game. By all sight is becoming on par with Uncharted as it's 4th entry marks the end of its main character, but its not there yet. Not until the second game in out.

Testfire3490d ago

Simply put, ROTR looks great, but U4 is a system seller.

Thatguy-3103490d ago

Uncharted 4 is going to drag this next installment of Tomb Raider. Quality and commercially. I'll eat crow if Uncharted doesn't outsell even though Rise of the tomb Raider will be in more than one platform.

Azzanation3490d ago

@Walker
Funny you say that when many UC fans claimed the Tomb Raider Reboot was actually better then UC1 and 3 even myself and my friends said the same thing. These games are a lot closer in terms of quality then you think. TR is definitely no push over and I'm looking forward to playing UC4 next year and finishing TR this year.

Ikki_Phoenix3490d ago

dude reboot tomb raider is a pure uncharted copy

naughty dog is simpy the better studio end of story

TwoForce3490d ago (Edited 3490d ago )

To be honest, UC 1 was the first ND game, so it kinda took a while to be popular. But when Uncharted 2 came out, it became a smash hit. It was one of the best PS3 game.

ColonelHugh3490d ago

@twoforce

Do you mean Uncharted 1 was the first Uncharted game?

Because Naughty Dog stretches back to Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation. Even that was a breakout hit, though their sequels each tend to iron out the kinks AND sell far better than the first iterations.

Then they have the obligatory fourth game feature driving elements.

"Sure, PS4 gamers will have to wait to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, but not only will we be getting the definitive version of the game when it’s released, alongside Xbox One owners, but we will also be getting Uncharted 4, and that’s a permanent exclusive on the PS4."

This part that I quoted from the article pretty much makes me wonder why PlayStation owners argue with Xbox owners about which franchise is better. Why even bother arguing with Xbox owners about which game or franchise is better? Us PlayStation owners will get to play both Rise of the Tomb Raider and Uncharted 4 so does it really matter? These Tomb Raider vs Uncharted debates remind me of the Infamous vs Prototype debates that took place last gen. As a PlayStation owner why does it matter which game or franchise is better when both are great and you can play both? As a PlayStation owner comparing Uncharted to Tomb Raider to me is almost like having 2 hot girlfriends at the same time. Who cares which girlfriend is hotter? Both chicks are hot as hell and you get to mess with both of them lol

DigitalRaptor3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

It's not the franchise though, it's the games. Tomb Raider is a classic series, but Uncharted has it beat even with its revised formula... This is not even about Xbox vs. PlayStation, I agree. I like both, but I simply enjoy Uncharted more than any Tomb Raider game of the past decade. So much more memorable and fun.

The arguments start though, when this Tomb Raider is put on "exclusive" lists, or when folks boast about it in their lineup. A bit redundant really, considering it's a multiplatform game. and it's almost like people think waiting for a certain game is a chore - not in 2016 buddy, not in 2016. I'll have far too many games to distract me from Lara Croft. Uncharted 4 being at the top of the list.

triple_c3490d ago (Edited 3490d ago )

I played all the original Tomb Raider's on the PS1 and you're definitely right about that. The new Tomb Raider formula is different from the original Tomb Raider's formula. The original Tomb Raider's were more explorative wheras the new ones have become more action orientated. I think the reason the formula changed was so Tomb Raider could appeal to a wider audience. Even the clothing has changed and Laura has become less revealing because of this whole feminist thing we have going on today. Tomb Raider basically changed and adapted a lot of it's formula to fit within today's standards of the industry and appeal to more people. It's funny too, because people say Uncharted copied Tomb Raider but I think Tomb Raider took a lot more from Uncharted than Uncharted took from Tomb Raider.

I also think it's stupid when people list Tomb Raider as an Xbox One exclusive even though it's coming to the PS4. That's like me listing Hitman as a PS4 exclusive since it's coming to PS4 first even though it's coming to the Xbox One.

Both Uncharted 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider will be great so I'm not worried about which will be better as I will be playing both on my PS4. I'm already putting money aside for 2016 and I have Uncharted 4 and Horizon: Zero Dawn pre-ordered on Amazon. I'm probably going to pre-order Tomb Raider next payday. Can't wait for 2016. My PS4 ain't gonna get any rest in 2016 lol

nitus103490d ago

I played and completed Tomb Raider 1 and 2 but sort of dropped TR 3 half way through and since then I just can't seem to get back into playing the later releases of TR even though I have tried.

@triplec

I definitely agree. The TR formula IMHO is different to the original.

As for Uncharted - Drake's Fortune that is the only game that I have played though three times, each time picking a higher difficulty.

PreAtaric3490d ago

"This part that I quoted from the article pretty much makes me wonder why PlayStation owners argue with Xbox owners about which franchise is better."

Because the games are more similar than they are different. If Tomb Raider was still like the old games I'd see your point and I'd actually favor Tomb Raider, but it's obviously emulating Uncharted these days.

Hroach6163490d ago

Both games were great. I'm playing the uncharted collection now.

In my opinion the tomb raider game just didn't have that "wow" factor. It was awesome to play and I really enjoyed it. But for some reason and I don't know why it didn't have the spectacle Uncharted has.

That's just me though.

VsAssassin3490d ago

I agree. TR reboot is a great game, yet it doesn't have that wow factor UC has because it tries to be a completely serious and dark game than UC.

To be fair, it's mostly the gaming media and not solely the sony gamers that stir arguments like this when there shouldn't be one.

Hroach6163490d ago

Click bait. They know a large portion of fans are die hard and will defend they're choice regardless of the others merits or faults.

The consensus here seems pretty straight forward though. Both were great games.

Play on

Spectre_StatusN73490d ago

Naughty Dog and Crystal Dynamics are not even in the same universe. Uncharted 4 will go out as THE BEST action/adventure game of all time.

StrawberryDiesel4203490d ago

Let's hope so, since druckmann and straley have their creative hands all over it. Still expecting Rise of the Tomb Raider to be a great game and receive critical acclaim.

GenuineGamer3490d ago

So playstation is the best place to play halo 5 and forza motorsport 6? Even Recore, Sea of Thieves, Rare Replay, Titanfall, Quantum Break, Gears of War and Scalebound? Even my old 360 games via bc and all the rest of microsofts exclusive lineup?

Wow thanks for telling me ill throw away my xbox no need for it anymore i can play EVERYTHING on playstation i dont need any other system thats so great

/s

Way of the fanboy needs to die. The best place to play is wherever you prefer and can enjoy the games you want to play. And no one system can claim that for everyone.

DragonDDark3490d ago

If you bring up Console exclusives with full exclusives, You know the ps4 will still win the argument .

GenuineGamer3490d ago

See that comment is whats wrong with the community. How can ps4 win exactly? Both systems have awesome exclusives already out and coming up that can only be played on their respective systems.

Games are games dude. Uncharted is amazing. Halo 5 looks to be the best one yet. Horizon looks awesome and so does quantum break.

Both companies are 'winning' as they are both making $$$

The only 'losers' are people who chose to limit themselves to one side like a its a cult thereby missing out on great games.

Sciurus_vulgaris3490d ago

I think people are getting tired of seeing lists of games. I don't see how all these games could apeal to one individual . You're likely listing many games you have no interest in .

On topic.
I personally had uncharted 2 as one of my games of the generation last gen. I personally liked Tomb Raider (2013) more than Uncharted 1 and 3. Both Uncharted 4 and Rise of The Tomb Raider look promising , but naughty dogs' upcoming game looks to be the more expansive of the two plus it will have multiplayer .

GenuineGamer3490d ago (Edited 3490d ago )

Thats a really big list of games!

How many fps and racer games are in there?

Seems lacking to me in that respect but damn it makes up for it in other genres!! PS4 has some sick games this gen but thats not gonna stop me from playing halo 5 an Forza M6 too!

Games are games and honestly i love both consoles equally for different reasons.

You can enjoy both you know!!!

Honestly i dont understand why some people cant just be happy with what they like. Why u gotta scream from the rooftops that its better than what someone else likes...

Everyone has different tastes anyway.

voodoogts3490d ago

Majority of these games you listed are crap with terrible ratings and most of those games are coming out when? 2 years from now? Remakes?

iain043490d ago

@ jon_snow
You have way to much time on your hands

nix3490d ago

Gamer,

That's the problem with you. You don't see shooter/racing games, you think it's not for you.

PS4 Has that many games - FACT.
Not your taste -OPINION.

I've never liked any of Xbox's exclusives except for Gears of War.. Guess what i can play that on PC now.

Wait until Scalebound comes out... I'm sure you won't be buying that bcoz it's a Japanese game.

The article is obviously saying that the PS is the best place to play for this particular kinds of action/adventure experiences & it says as much. Seems like you didn't read the article. This is simply saying that fans of this very specific kind of gaming experience shouldn't fret over not being able to play RotTR this year because they will be receiving that game in its best version post patching & dlc & they will also be receiving Uncharted. Halo & Forza have nothing to do with this particular subject because they are completely different experiences...it's safe to say fans of UC would be interested in TR but not at all sensible to say that fans of UC would be interested in a racing game....unless it's UnKarted.

StrawberryDiesel4203490d ago (Edited 3490d ago )

As a one who enjoys games in general, regardless of the platform, I never understand the dedication to one single company. I absolutely adore Bloodborne, it's by far my game of the year and probably generation. That doesn't mean I only play PS4 games though. I'm a fan of games, period. Not companies. Give me all the games I can afford on both systems, just make them fun and content that I enjoy. I'm getting both Uncharted 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider for my XBone, just like I have TR Definitive Edition and Uncharted Collection on PS4.

nitus103490d ago

Scalebound wont be out till late 2016 and it will have quite a bit of competition when it does.

As for Halo, Gears of War and Forza - rinse repeat! Of course if you like those games then fine but there are many people that don't really care for Shooters and Racing games.

Rare Replay - remaster of old Rare games. This is not to say that Rare games are bad but they are only new if you have not played them before. This is no different to remasters of other popular games.

Titanfall and Quantum Break - Basically First Person Shooters with QB not due out till 2016

Recore and Sea of Thieves - Both adventure games and not due out till 2016 with SoT being for MS Windows as well.

The Inconsistent Harmony: 5 Examples of Ludonarrative Dissonance in Video Games

VGChartz's Issa Maki: "I finally have a proper designation akin to what I've always referred to internally as 'the line that must be crossed' or 'The Line', for short – ludonarrative dissonance – the separation from a video game's story in relation to its gameplay. Why isn't PETA all up in Mario's grill for jumping on turtles and killing fish, or charging Samus Aran with the extinction of the Metroid species? Ever notice how fire has that habit of making bosses in Resident Evil stronger? Read on my friend, for I endeavor to imbue you with the ability to engage in basic queries concerning the concept."

UC 2, 4, 3 and 1. Great read and article

ABizzel11374d ago

No Golden Abyss -_-, otherwise I agree with the order.

UC2: Best overall
UC4: Best graphics, best gameplay, best locations, best environements
UC3: Best set pieces IMO (the boat and desert fights will always be amazing)
UC1: A rough Draft of what was to come
UCGA: Basically UC1 on Vita

Levii_921375d ago (Edited 1375d ago )

Great list and great article nicely writen and explained. Although for me personaly i would put Drakes Fortune above Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4 is absolutely my favourite of the franchise and number 1 for me.

Inverno1375d ago

U2 is the only game playable on crushing without causing a great amount of frustration. Not to mention just how much influence it had that they redid some of U2s set pieces like the caravan twice, and armored truck chase in U4.

DFresh1374d ago (Edited 1374d ago )

I'd rate it as the following.

1.) Uncharted 2
(Close to perfection of any game I've played in years. Single Player/Multiplayer/Co Op all amazing.)

2.) Uncharted 3
(On par with UC2 multiplayer/co op wise minus the kickbacks [aka killstreaks]. I really liked the Lawrence of Arabia story.)

3.) Uncharted 4
(Single player is amazing. Multiplayer was meh. Co Op had potential. Absolutely hated the health revive system it slowed down the game way too much. Always preferred the fast pace action of UC2/UC3. Made it way more fun that way. Recoil was too ridiculous that most people in lobbies would only do hip firing, using power weapons and using that OP grappling hook to melee people after dropping them. Nobody wanted to revive anyone.)

4.) Uncharted
(It's the first in the series so it's hard to judge. Though I loved the story.)

NecrumOddBoy1374d ago

I agree here but it’s also a series you can play from front to back and truly enjoy. Story-wise, they are all great and flow so well. I wish they threw both Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy on this list. Lost Legacy is the best mechanically in my opinion. You can see it’s stepping stone framework for TLOUS2.

Michiel19891374d ago

uncharted 2 is one of the few games that actually surpassed its pre-release hype.

medman1374d ago (Edited 1374d ago )

I am a single player gamer...I barely ever touch a multiplayer component. The only exceptions over the years have been the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, TLOU factions, and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. The Uncharted 2 multiplayer saw me spend more time playing it than all my other multiplayer experiences over the years combined. That game really was a masterpiece all around.

brando0081374d ago

I agree completely, those are all stellar MP experiences, coming from another SP gamer who only occasionally gives MP some time.

Gardenia1374d ago

Come to think of it, the step between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 is huge. It goes from the weakest in the series to one of the best games ever made.
I think I'm going to play all of them again soon.

Ninver1374d ago

Yeah all of a sudden I've got that Uncharted itch.

Michiel19891374d ago
