Gears of War Ultimate Edition Shows Us What a Remaster Should Look Like

Over the past few years, and more specifically the past few months if you've been watching this space, you will have already seen how "remasters" are taking over. What is really meant by this is that we are (supposedly) getting less triple A new IP's and instalments of games in favour of game developers "re-doing" older games with a bit better graphics and slight changes here and there. For the most part, it's seen as a bit of a shady practice and just a way of getting older games that people love onto the newer system, then charging them again to play the same game. This is mainly why I don't partake in these sorts of games. However, Epic look like they are set to redefine and hopefully push other developers into making these experiences feel fresh and, at times, even completely different. Let's get into why the Gears of War Ultimate Edition gives us what we want from a remaster.

MS are masters are remastering games!

They treat their IPs with respect and provide huge value to their customers. I cannot wait to play this!!!

Nitrowolf23609d ago (Edited 3609d ago )

Not to be that guy, but MCC says otherwise. And not just that, these are just two games they remastered unless you count RARE collection?

Regardless though, GoW:UE is looking awesome, and definitely being taken with care. I mean, this is beyond what remasters do nowadays, where they just up the res and FPS. They literally making new assets

XBLSkull3609d ago

I agree, Halo 1 and 2 anniversary are much more impressive remasters, but this Gears remaster is much better than some of the other stuff that has been remastered such as The Last of Us or God of War III.

@Nitrowolf2:

"Not to be that guy, but MCC says otherwise. And not just that, these are just two games they remastered unless you count RARE collection?"

Despite the mess-up of the online portion, the game itself was very respectfully done with the proper care it deserved. It provided huge value at 4-games and included multiplayer.

That is more than any other game that calls themselves a remaster. Which really are 1080p/60fps lazy bump and sell.

They are really ports!

"Regardless though, GoW:UE is looking awesome, and definitely being taken with care. I mean, this is beyond what remasters do nowadays, where they just up the res and FPS. They literally making new assets"

Gears has all new textures, all new sound recording for weapons, newly done cinematics, new motion capture, additional content, dedicated servers, and redone game mechanics. On to of that, it includes the entire Gears of War quadrilogy on BC for free!

@XBLSkull:

"I agree, Halo 1 and 2 anniversary are much more impressive remasters, but this Gears remaster is much better than some of the other stuff that has been remastered such as The Last of Us or God of War III."

I was desperate to find something for my PS4, and Last of Us was nice, but still a 1080p lazy bump and sell. Same with God of War 3. It is quite insulting really to call them remaster!

All aboard the Cole train baby

isa_scout3609d ago (Edited 3609d ago )

The article says Epic is developing this when in reality it's The Coalition. Just thought I'd point that out. I've been playing Gears of War using backward compatibility with preview program, and you don't really realize how bad it looks until you go back and play it. The Gears UE beta spoiled me. I can't wait for Gears UE. I'm really excited to see how they changed the cutscenes as well.

Kingdomcome2473608d ago

The one cutscene that I saw with General Raam stabbing the guy looked fantastic.

Paul853609d ago

Can't make my mind up if i want to get the digital CE or standard physical? Excited for Gears, never experienced the multi player in its 360 days. Started with GOW2.

spicelicka3609d ago

I've never really bought a full game digital, but I think I'm gonna go with digital on this. Just because im too lazy to get up and change discs, I can quickly start this game and have a few multiplayer matches. This is the perfect type of game for that.

DLConspiracy3609d ago

I was buying everything digital because I love the fact I can just say "Xbox go to _______" and not have to put a disc in. I have been telling myself to buy more discs so if I need I can trade it in. However, am I gonna trade this in? Probably not. It's a classic. Same with MCC.

modelgod3609d ago

@paul85, get the hard copy. Nothing beats the nostalgia of having a physical copy of a game. I'm not really a fan of digital downloads, maybe because I'm a collector.

Paul853609d ago

Yeah nostalgia wins:)

qu1ckset3609d ago

To each there own, I can't stand having a bunch of cases sitting around collecting dust, own all my X1 games digitally, and plan to keep it that way! But being a heavy PC gamer has made that switch easier!

LAWSON723609d ago (Edited 3609d ago )

I have that nostalgia with PS but I have always seen my Xbox as an online device. My 360 had live a month after I got it like 8-9 years ago going digital is kind of like the next step for MP games for me. My friend and I share game libraries, the only games I would buy physically are SP focused ones or ones that truly make the system special like QB and Rare Replay which are games I could always see myself coming back to eventually. There are some games I would love to put on a shelf and call a collection of great Xbox One games.

Digital I save half the money and it helps me decide what games are worthy of taking up space in my room. If they are worth it in a couple years when I see them games sub $20 I will get a physical copy

LA_Zeo3609d ago

Funny, I thought The Last Of Us Remastered showed us what a remastered game should look like.

AstroCyborg3609d ago

that was just a 1080p 60 fps upgrade nothing special just like the rest of sonys lazy remasters

Grap3609d ago

I loved The Last Of Us and i bought the last gen copy and ps4 copy, and you are right it was a lazy port nothing special except 60FPS.

AdaptAndOvercome3609d ago (Edited 3609d ago )

You dumb fools, gears of war remaster required new assets because it's a 10 year old game. The original is extremely dated. It would have looked like a piece of sh×× in comparison to relatively recent games.

The Last of Us wasn't a lazy remaster. It looks far better than tmcc and gow ue.

modelgod3609d ago

Yes... What it should " look like, literally. " what coalition is doing is giving us a refreshing experience. They totally revamped the entire game down to the physics and animations.

DLConspiracy3609d ago

This is an article about Gears Of War. Let's talk about that and keep the trolling out of it.

Tedakin3609d ago

The Last of Us remaster had zero effort put in. They upscaled. Gears and Halo 2 were completely remade from the ground up.

madcowzz3609d ago

Jesus, lots of trolls in this thread. In TLOU Remaster, no, there definitely was NOT zero effort put in. Saying that shows you know nothing about the effort that was put into the remaster. It isn't a simple transfer of the game from the PS3 architecture to the ps4's, so yes, a ton of effort was put into it.

Naughty Dog completely remade every cutscene from the ground up and revamped the entire game's graphics. The fact that it's a last gen game given a new coat of paint and still looks this good shows the amount of effort that was put into this game overall.

On topic: Gears UE is looking unreal. Definitely going to get this for my collection soon

franwex2037d ago (Edited 2037d ago )

Use a credit card if you are kinda leary. Not a debit card.
I have bought stuff from them and had no problems, so I guess it’s okay.

Thunder_G0d_Bane2037d ago

Are keys legit or will Sony unleash ban hammer

ElementX2036d ago

I've heard they're bought with stolen credit card numbers. The person gets the transactions reversed because it was stolen, but the "seller" gets the game codes to sell on CDKeys and other grey market sites.

2037d ago
paulust20022036d ago

The issue with these sites is that 'some people' buy keys in sales with stolen credit cards, then you buy the game from them...Then the company get the chargeback so it actually costs the game company money. I'm not convinced this is a vast majority though as pretty sure if it was a fraud site it woud just be closed down. Only issue I've had with an invalid key was for splinter cell blacklist for 38p. Pretty sure that is penny fraud. i.e. most people won't bother disputing as it's not worth it.
