"Okay, Square Enix, you got me. After refusing to refer to Super Nintendo classic Final Fantasy II as its chronologically accurate name Final Fantasy IV, I am finally giving in. With your constant re-releases of the Final Fantasy series, my stubbornness is just making everything too confusing. You win. Final Fantasy IV it is.
Even though the original Final Fantasy IV is still, to this day, one of my favorite role-playing games of all time, I wasn't all that excited when they announced this Nintendo DS remake. Why redo a beautiful piece of art when the original is just fine? To me, it's similar to someone like Miley Cyrus rerecording Etta James's "At Last". Sure, the kids might like it ... but what's the point?
Regardless of my reservations, I knew I was still going to play it. If anything, I was curious how some of my favorite videogame moments of all time would be recreated in fancy 3D (Palom and Porom's noble sacrifice!).
So what is the final verdict? Does Final Fantasy IV for the DS maintain the charm of the original, or does everything precious get lost in the technological translation? Hit the jump for the full review."
Gary Green said: We’re finding ourselves in a similar position with the Pixel Remaster edition of Final Fantasy IV as we were with Final Fantasy III since, once again, we’ve received a slightly upscaled, more vibrant port of the original game when there’s already an expanded 3D remake available. As such, we’re playing a game which, even after its long-awaited release, still lives very much in the shadow of its remake.
If only they didn't screw ps4 owners over with a physical release. I'd have ran through this in a heartbeat.
The first one I played, it was the one that made me fall in love with JRPGs and is still my favorite to this day. A masterpiece

A landmark RPG rich in personality, Final Fantasy IV took the series to the moon and back.
This was the game that got me to notice the series. 6 is the one that captured my heart and 7 was when it cemented it as one of my all-time favorite series. For me 4 - 9 are the best. 10... I can appreciate it and enjoy it, but it doesn't hold a candle to the classics. 12 is good too, but I can never finish it. 13... well, it's--it's a game. 15 starts off pretty strong, but then feels rushed and slapped together with duct tape and glue by the end.
I'm hoping 16 will blow away all expectations and really give us a game that rivals the classics. The trailers are doing a good job in making me think it can!
Yeah, I am similar. 4 and 6 are my favorites, with 7 and 10 next. Everything since 10 has gone downhill (not counting MMOs). I don't hold much hope for FFXVI, though it is very pretty.
Yea i'm with ya, there. Don't get me wrong, I think 7 Remake really restored my faith in Square Enix, but I miss the good ol' turn-based stuff.
@CrimsonWing69 Ah, FF7 Remake completely slipped my mind! I enjoyed that one, though I haven't touched Intergrade yet.
The theme of remorse & redemption still haunt me today. This game also introduced the famous Crystal Theme.
i just got to the sacrafice. so far it's an amazing game. who says a recreation of a great game couldn't make it greater?
