Evolve Review | IGN

Vince Ingenito: Where a lot of high-concept games start with big promises and end in scaled back disappointment, Evolve achieves exactly what it set out to do. Through an array of intelligent design choices, developer Turtle Rock Studios has created a smart, asymmetric, multiplayer monster-hunting game that plays unlike anything else. It’s tactically deep, bursting with character, and once you get past its mildly obtrusive progression system, it offers a level of nuance rarely found in multiplayer shooters.

-Foxtrot3733d ago

9? Really.

I've seen many good games getting shitty scores on IGN but ones which look average and have basic content where everything else is DLC get really high scores.

Really it flabbergasts me

DarkOcelet3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

A 9 for this disgusting POS. I am telling you either those journalists are getting paid or just love taking it up their @sses.

They didnt even mention neither the dlc or microtransactions? Seriously WTF!

-Foxtrot3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

It's basically "DLC: The Video Game"

I know the developer came out and said "The game has enough content on it's own, we started making the DLC after the game went gold"....but lets be honest every bloody developer who gets caught out says that.

How can you do a review and not mention that.

A reviewer will mention the slightest things for some games yet if you take this with DLC or Assassins Creed Unity with how broken it was hardly no one says a word

DarkOcelet3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

@Foxtrot

Which seriously pisses me off my friend. People are paying 60$ for a full game. Now they are selling half the game as overpriced dlc.

They want to make dlc, it should be free. Many people have complained of this game being so light on content yet they go and make dlc and microtranstaction that should have been in the game for 180$. This is outrageous. Gamers should take a stance and say no to those greedy POS companies out there.

Forn3733d ago

It truly is sickening. I haven't wanted a game to flop so badly in recent memory as I do Evolve. Gamers should never support it.

HammadTheBeast3733d ago

They literally even said in an interview "We are making this game modulated so its easy to add dlc".

When a company literally shows you content they could've made for free or unlockable, and says *** you, this is DLC DAY ONE, YOU KNOW THEY DONT GIVE A SINGLE ****.

Army_of_Darkness3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

Let's all look for the evolve ads on the ign's website everyone! Gotta catch'em all! Greedymon!

BattleAxe3733d ago

This isn't much different than journalists saying that Advanced Warfare is a fresh new beginning for the Call of Duty series, when in reality, it's just more of the same. IGN have completely lost their objectivity.

Ballsack3733d ago

Hope ign enjoy the goodie bags they obviously recieved

This shows you how corrupt these gaming sites are

Ign need to do a eurogamer ...lets see how many goodie bags they would recieve if they abolished scores...

Disgusting

johndoe112113733d ago

This is why gamergate is so bloody important. Gaming journalism has been shot to $h!t and we are paying for it, LITERALLY.

ifistbrowni3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

There is no way this game is a 9. It's a 7, 7.5 at best.

The game is interesting at first, but good luck finding a Hunt match today where the monster actually attacks at all stages (stage 1, 2 and 3). Every monster just runs until they get to stage 3 and then just wreck house.

You play 10-15 minute matches in Hunt for 1-2 minutes of fun. The rest is spent running around the map trying to trap the monster, but if they're anything but the Goliath they're hard as hell to get them trapped in the Arena.

The Goliath monster seems like the only monster than has some balance. The Wraith and Kraken are way too OP for the Hunt game mode. They travel at a wicked speed which makes it near impossible to close the distance and get them trapped.

When people ready up as Wraith or Kraken it's almost gotten to the point where I hit "take a break" and let my bot play until the monster gets to stage 3 and finally attacks.

In Hunt you could literally get a full team of friends and sit at spawn the whole time with no intentions to kill the monster and 85% of the players using monsters wont even bother attacking you unless they're stage 3.

10-15 minutes of running around a pretty empty map. 2 minutes of fun. That is the summary of nearly every Hunt game.

You'd have to pay me to get me to say this game is anything better than a 7.

MasterCornholio3733d ago

I guess they forgot to mention that this title is a buy to pay game.

;)

Gazondaily3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

I don't get why you lot continue to be surprised by this or the antics of other mainstream gaming sites.

You proclaim to be well aware of what they do but when they do it, you flail your arms about in disbelief.

Are you genuinely surprised by their scores? These are the same guys that routinely rate God awful COD titles highly and have some of the most inconsistent review scores.

viperman2403732d ago (Edited 3732d ago )

If this was a free to play game I wouldn't mind all the DLC (not like I Was going to buy this game anyway). But when your charging FULL price AND throwing in DLC/microtransaction than you bloody jumped the shark.

I have no idea why devs have been getting so greedy with DLC. But I digress.

Why is it that when a game has so much stuff locked behind paid content most reviewers gloss over it or don't mention it at all. This is also another reason why review scores need to go.

@johndoe11211
But we all know what GG is really about, its about harassing women out of the video game industry :^)

Psychotica3732d ago

My game seems to play just fine without buying anything extra..

freshslicepizza3732d ago

if we ignore the dlc money grab how is the game itself?

@ifistbrowni, these are the responses needed. i'm just wondering if this game much like most online games really depends on the people playing it. one could have a great experience playing the same game as someone else having a terrible experience and it's all because of who you play with.

but if the game doesn't have much depth then paying $60 is a hard pill to swallow even if we do ignore the ridiculous dlc pricing scheme.

TheRedButterfly3732d ago

To play devil's advocate, Turtlerock has been very transparent about their DLC intentions. Did they ever discuss the extent of the DLC content that would be made available? (Much less at launch?) No, and the amount /is/ surprising... but the fact that Day-One DLC is an option shouldn't come as a surprise.

I'm not interested in the game - I made that decision after the Big Alpha - but the dev. team /was/ pretty clear about their intentions... Just sayin'. :/

Sevir3732d ago

I really don't know how this game scored so high... But then again, they've been in love with this game since its first hands on.

Vaneriuz3732d ago

@ifistbrowni

According to you yeah. It's a 9 in my book.

Also, the reason you're running around looking for the monster is because your group isn't good enough at tracking (perhaps combined with a skilled monster player). When people start getting better at hunting it'll even out. I've had plenty of matches where we've caught the monster before stage 3, and even beaten stage 3 monsters several times.

I've also met some damn skilled players as monster, where I've really felt hunted..

Shoddy DLC decisions aside, the core game has alot of content and alot of unlockable stuff.

I know I'll get negged to hell for this. But I really like the game. I do however NOT like microtransactions etc. But I don't feel forced to buy anything in this game, at all.

The game truly is unique though.. And that counts for alot these days.

Love it :-)

DragonKnight3732d ago

IGN gives these high scores to maintain their ability to negotiate for exclusive first review rights with any publisher they want. Doesn't matter how bad the game is, IGN wants to be the first to review it and they'll pucker up to publisher behind any day of the week to do it. And you'd better damn well believe they will fiercely go after anyone who tries to post a review of the game before they do.

To give you an example, I don't know how many of you have heard of EpicNameBro on Youtube, but he's a Souls series fan and the main bulk of his channel's stuff is all Souls related. Well back when he was working on the guide for Dark Souls 2 he had the privilege of seeing the game before normal gamers or even most reviewers could see it, or at least in more finished aspects. He made a video talking about how he was working on the guide and the most he could say was that the game looked "good."

IGN flagged his video and he had to take it down. Why? Because they had negotiated first review rights with Namco Bandai and they considered him saying the game looked "good" to be a review of the game.

I hope I'm not the only one thinking "are you f***ing serious?"

IGN is one of the worst examples of publisher paid "journalism" and bought reviews, probably THE worst.

jcnba283732d ago

IGN did an "IGN First" on them a few months ago so it was probably in that their deal that they had to give the game a decent score for the early access content for IGN's website.

solid_snake36563732d ago

@DarkOcelet And this is why I'm afraid of a digital only future. With physical games, if you end up making a bad purchase you can end up selling it, and get some money back. With a digital only future you'll have only one place to buy games, and the developers will control the price point. We'll end seeing more content being left out and sold as dlc.

Eonjay3732d ago (Edited 3732d ago )

Nevermind...

GarrusVakarian3732d ago (Edited 3732d ago )

Guys, it's IGN. Anyone who is basing their decision on whether or not to buy a game from what IGN says is doing it completely wrong. They hand out 9's like they're nothing. They're a prime example of when a review/gaming news site cares more about gaming politics and maintaining positive relationships with devs and publishers, and less about fair, unbiased, reviews.

From the streams I've watched, this game looks like a six, at the most.

strauser3603732d ago

They really just dont care about the 'integrity' of journalism anymore. its better to just look up gameplay videos and judge for yourself, i stopped reading big game site reviews a while and a half ago.

gangsta_red3732d ago

Sooooo...has anyone played it for themselves to actually see if the game deserves a 9?

Because all I see are people crapping on the game for what they believe it will play like or how it appears to be light on content.

But I am not reading if anyone has actually played the game.

ifistbrowni3732d ago

@gangsta_red, yes I have played it. I wouldn't just make my post up.

I watched a friend stream it, the game only has 2 game modes and is soooo boring. I was like soooooo they have animals/creatures in the little jungle but they don't attack you just walk around except when you go near the water then some gator thing pops out... then you have that monster (the other player) it was soooooooo boring same stuff over and over and over no variation... like I said before only 2 game modes... this game is clearly overrated. I bet not see anything less than a 10 for The Order on 2/20 smh

Kane223733d ago

oh god, im expecting all kinds of bullshit nitpicking when the order reviews come out next week.

JimmyDM903733d ago

I predict a 7 point something from IGN for The Order and watch them bust The Order's balls in terms of story and voice acting while they praise Evolve for its handful of varied lines and AMAZING characters.

Ugh.

Gazondaily3733d ago

Aaaand we're back onto The Order somehow...

kstap333732d ago

You are setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect any game to get a 10.

remixx1163733d ago

Lol ign must be getting a fat cut of that dlc money.....

Kingdomcome2473733d ago

You can't spell ignoramus without IGN... to think that they trashed Alien:Isolation for difficulty and being too lengthy. I think IGN has an aversion to true value. Oh well. I knew after the Beta that this wasn't a game that I'd spend $60 on. #Devolve

thehitman13983732d ago

Well said. After I played the alpha n beta (just to see if anything changed) and felt like this was a game that should be for last gen. It does not at all justify the cost and tack on the whole dlc thing. Lol this game was sooooo pushed by the media but the sales figure will prove that gamers do not buy into that crap anymore.

ajax173733d ago

With all the DLC backlash this score just screams payoff from the publisher.

Rachel_Alucard3733d ago

This game was set to fail before it even got announced. Announcing pre-order bonuses before even a single screenshot or official announcement was even made was just the tip of the iceberg.

AngelicIceDiamond3733d ago

No IGN your not encouraging me to go out and get a Microtransaction game.

Its a fun game no doubt but a 9" for the type of game and model it encourages?

Not even close.

Bathyj3733d ago

That was the word that popped in my head the moment I saw the score. REALLY?

I havent really been following it, not my sort of game obviously, but I feel this is gonna bomb. People seem pissed, and I cant blame them.

UltraNova3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

I'm curious as to what will pop in your head when you see the sale figures for this "game" ranking in the millions...and then there's DLC sales...

There are a lot of gullible people out there.

Then maybe your head will literally pop when you see IGN's review score on The Order after picking it apart for anything they can find...

MyDietEqualsGames3732d ago

Haha. A damned 9 for a skeleton bones of a game. IGN. Ive been on your site since 2003, and now look at you, from cool to fool over a decade.

I think the red flag here is not mentioning the dlc at freaking all! As some people have pointed out. IGN stealth shilling? Stay tuned.

3732d ago
Scottyxboxoneandps43732d ago

@ Foxtrot
Yep 9 really. Fantastic game!!!

magiciandude3732d ago

Looks like more journalists are giving this game a high score. Perhaps Turtle Rock is using the proceedings from their DLC/microtransactions to pay for high scoring reviews.

XanderZane3732d ago

Seems the journalist have been paid. If you check Metacritics you'll see several top journalist sites like IGN, Game Informer and Gamespot giving the game great reviews. Now look at the User Scores for this game (4.8 & 4.3 for PC version). Obviously gamers aren't happy with the amount of content in the game and the overprice DLC. They would have been better off just including all the DLC into the $60 game and then adding an add on expansion 3-4 months later for $14.99. Add more monsters, hunters, locations and options like catching the monsters alive and maybe a 2 player co-op mode.

PhucSeeker3732d ago

Not really, user can post anything they want, they don't need to own the game or play through it, they just post whatever they want.

GordonKnight3732d ago

You won't see this happen on the Wii U.

@Foxtrot

What makes you more mad the Gamepad or 3rd party companies doing stuff like this?

Blaze9293732d ago

lol this game is no 9. Straight up malarkey going on here

Visiblemarc3732d ago

Part of the problem with a game like this, is reviewers play it in a bubble, with time pressure.

Play a game like this for a few weeks and enjoy it (I personally hated the alpha) and you might say "Wow, that's an 8 or 9!"

Yet...a lot of the value of a game like this comes from longevity. If people get bored of this by the time a month or two passes, then what good is IGN's 9 to a potential new buyer?

On the flipside, single player oriented experiences seem to suffer the opposite problem. Reviewers say "little replay value, 7/10."

Yet it makes no sense. If you pay $60 for a linear game now, or in 3 months, you get your money's worth assuming you like linear games.

However, if you buy a multiplayer game for $60 and no one is playing it anymore (or have moved on to expensive DLC) can you say you got a good value?..or even what you paid for?

kstap333732d ago

Similar to titanfall, I'm sure the price will steadily drop over a few months so more and more new people pick it up, keeping the population at an acceptable level months after release.

Gamer19823732d ago

IGN have been paid for reviews for a long time and lost there integrity why do you think most of there big name staff have left recently?? They have had enough of not actually letting there thoughts heard and say what they want and they have said so since they left which translates to IGN makes the reviews not the reviewers. The reviews bought and paid for simple as that. Just like nearly every COD review.

thehitman13983732d ago

Just down right disgusting, first with the game and second with these so-called "journalist"

d4v03333732d ago

hahaha it is funny nowadays journalists give shitty scores to good games and good scores to shitty games

vallencer3732d ago

Because of all the hate for the dlc this game is getting I'm gonna buy it. It's all costumes!! Jesus christ oh and some monsters and a few hunters. ALL maps will be free which is the important part and if you don't buy any of the monsters or hunters you can still play with people who did. Sounds like a good dlc model to me. The amount of hate this game is getting will make the joy of buying it even better :).

N4g_null3732d ago

Im curious... I stayed away from this for a reason. I've played hunt games like this since the mods in quake. They only ever rock if you have a crew for good vs bad.

The question is where was the out cry before release? If you didn't think it was good enough for a 9 why not tell some one early. Devs really need more feed back also. Hey but wait they sneakED this in there! REALLY?

I believe Evolve was one of the 3rd parties every one was screaming about? Now it is a DLC mess. How long are you guys willing to put up with this? It's like they think you are all big box phone gamers that love to buy things in game.

You guys pretty much ignore good games it would seem. Some real bad games got crazy sales the last couple of years.

You may complain about the review but watch the sales of this game. Maybe people want a dlc microtransaction arena hunting game.

skratchy3732d ago

It reminds me of a reoccurring minigame from Mario Party, except they are somehow tricking bros into spending $60+ on it.

SharnOfTheDEAD3732d ago

I get reviews are opinions, but there's a point where you gotta look at things objectively, but I guess that's hard to do though when 2K Games drop a cheque through your door huh?

Bennibop3732d ago

I have bought evolve on ps4 and absolutely hate it And not because of the dlc as it does not stop you playing the game or lock you out of any aspect plus all new maps will be free. My issue is with the fact it just does not work on consoles, nobody using mics and loads of lone wolves going off on their own make 90% of games unwinnable it's just not fun. Will be trading for dying light or the order next week.

Makroyale3732d ago

Game is so fun. Biggest complaint, graphics could be better..

DLC doesn't bother me... I'm mean jesus, people are bitching about skins!

If you want to play the new characters when they get released, purchase the season pass.

But to be clear here... There's nothing besides the core game you can buy now besides the skins, so if you think you're going to be missing out on day 1/2/3 (today), then a lot of these bitching people have fooled you.

SonyPS3603732d ago (Edited 3732d ago )

It's almost as if you've played the game yourselves.

Muzikguy3732d ago (Edited 3732d ago )

IGN sucks. If it weren't for them having all their video walkthroughs I'd never go there. I agree Foxtrot. I thought Alien Isolation was possibly the best game last year. What was their review of that?! And Evolve gets a 9. Yeah, there's no agenda being pushed there

@Dark
Yes. That kind of review method needs to end now. People should be informed about everything to do with the game in a review. Selectively hiding things should be red flags for everyone! I hope this game falls flat on it's face. The DLC is a joke! IGN is a joke!

Pintheshadows3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

The bots aren't very good either. I want to like it more than I do but it is so dull and uneventful for long periods of time.

The Honest Trailer for it is very accurate.

WellyUK3732d ago

Yet you will buy a Linear single player only game that lasts 5 hours long? People on this site lol... This game is good without the dlc so wtf is with all the crying... Deal with it. Yes the DLC is BS but by god moaning about dlc in todays age is laughably moronic as your fighting a losing battle.

Muzikguy3732d ago

@Welly
Go buy the game and have fun playing it. You can't sit there and tell everyone to deal with it and stop complaining about the DLC. It's people like you that allow these things to continue. We don't have to deal with anything we don't agree with! Just because one company says it's good for us doesn't make it so

ginsunuva3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

That can't be right; 8 means good.

3732d ago
True_Samurai3733d ago

Meh, I liked the game but it's full of microtransactions. If I buy the season pass I shouldn't have to pay $130 of dlc just for skins

Fireseed3733d ago

Wait, they force you upon popping the game in to buy 130$ of DLC before you're allowed to play the game?!? O_O

Bathyj3733d ago

No they just flaunt in your face how much work they did on this game, that doesnt come with the game.

Making games is just like any other job, be it cooking pizzas, mowing lawns or building a brick wall. Its a product of labour, time, and resources.

If you spend all your time digging in the sand pit, you just cant put as many bricks in that wall in the same amount of time allocated and it wont be as high.

I'd love to see devs concentrating on the game at hand, the product theyre releasing and promoting at retail, and then and ONLY then, making extra content to get a bit of extra scratch.

Fireseed3733d ago

@Bathy

And just like those jobs extra costs more. Want pepperoni on that pizza? .50$. Want Dri-Wall over that brick? That'll be extra.

Like numerous devs have said and even from my limited experience a game goes gold usually 2 months before the game ships... so then you still have all that time to do what? You still have artists revved up about design these things so just let them go to town on designing new skins and crap.

Bathyj3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

A game does not go gold 2 months before release. It used to be 2 weeks but lately its been a bit longer but generally a couple weeks to a month.

Regardless of the actual figure, its not important, I would have thought they would start working on their Day 1 patches in that time, since every game has them now.

And I really dont think they are waiting till the game goes Gold and then starting DLC. Thats my point. They are working on it side by side, and then just cherry picking what goes on the disc and what doesnt.

Im not against DLC as a concept. Like I said, Id love them to make more content and extend a games lifecycle after it release. But this showing you the carrot and then hiding it for later is getting ridiculous. A certain amount is excepted in the initial price. What if your pizza turned up with no cheese?

Games used to have unlockables that you could actually work to get but playing the game. Remember completing Tekken with every character just to see their cinematic? Now you just buy them on the store.

Thats just an example, but like I said, its a slippery slope, and every year we accept a little bit more, a little bit more until we just take anything they dish out and say thank you sir, may I have another.

Whats is gonna actually take before we say screw that, enough's enough? probably another games crash like the 80's.

Kryptix3732d ago

@Fireseed

Evolve went gold on January 8 so the 2 months of much free time to create so many pieces of DLC is invalid. I highly doubt a total of 44 pieces of DLC worth $130/€114 were quickly made in just one month.

If you rebuttal what I said and say that the designs were already ready before it went gold then what you're saying is that the game was never finished and people are buying an incomplete game right now.

Then there's the other thing where one can say content was actually cut from the game if the "DLC" was cut to be sold separately as packs.

And when you said that extras cost more, you don't even remember when those "extras" were actually pieces of the whole package and were unlockables in-game. Instead now, extras are now separated into DLC for you to buy day one to try and milk your wallet.

There's more arguments to be made with this game, for example... A monster that is priced at 15 bucks. 15. You can buy a game at that price and one fact is that this piece was announced a long time ago, basically, you're going to be paying $75 for the full game if you didn't preorder.

Too many malpractices with DLC; preorder DLC, day one DLC, overpriced DLC... So my question is, why are you defending them? Are you trying to justify your purchase or are you really that guillable that you can't see that they're following every wrong that surfaced from the past generation...

On gaming websites evolve is doing good review wise. But customer reviews are pretty bad......

YodaCracker3733d ago

That seems to happen with a lot of big games. Sometimes it's considered "cool" to hate on popular games. User reviews are never to be trusted because a large portion of them are from angry people who never played the game.

Forn3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

Wrong. Paid off "professionals" are not to be trusted. Gamers need to make their own decisions. Watch a Twitch stream or something and go off that if the game seems worth the price to you, although imo Evolve is one that everyone should stay far away from to teach the publisher a lesson about trying to screw us over.

HammadTheBeast3733d ago

But come on, IGN didn't mention the microtransactions or DLC a SINGLE TIME in that article.

Pintheshadows3733d ago

No surprise there Hammad. They would likely lose revenue if they did that. And that is why I choose to ignore all of these sites now. They are PR firms in disguise.

Rachel_Alucard3733d ago

Believe me nobody thinks this game was even cool to begin with. The game is not actually that popular and it may seem that way from the amount of marketing courtesy of 2K. It's actually considered "cool" to praise the game at this point, at least you'll get that troll status just like on the other end of the spectrum.

So much hate for cosmetic skin dlc. Its not like any game changing content is behind a paywall. If charging for cosmetic skins for a game is enough to boycott a game over, you missed the boat a long long time ago. The game is fun, which is why its reviewing well. The gameplay is very polarizing, and if you don't like competitive games, or don't have a group of friends to play with, this game isn't for you. But why should publishers be punished because they want to cater to one audience... Fighting games don't get this kind of flak. Single player games rarely get hated on by the community, but destiny, titanfall, and evolve get article after article written by angry gamers stating that the end of gaming is nigh.

Rachel_Alucard3733d ago

Oh it's fun with friends for about 2 hours. Then it just shoots down in interest almost immediately. Also the fun with friends phrase is cheap because everything is fun with friends no matter how terrible it is. Why do you think people get drunk with friends or party with friends?

XabiDaChosenOne3733d ago

This is why reviews from "professional sites" are BS.

dreamed3733d ago

I wonder why??,review sites are not to be taken seriously imo, they all basicaly take bribes, ign being the worst.

WellyUK3732d ago

‘Evolve: Stage 2’ is back from the dead as peer-to-peer servers come back online

From NME: "Evolve: Stage 2 had its multiplayer servers shut down back in 2018, but today players are once again able to matchmake and join peer-to-peer multiplayer games.

Several months ago, peer-to-peer functionality was lost for Evolve Legacy, which was the only way fans of the series could play with friends. Upon a multitude of players reaching out to publisher 2K, the issue was eventually fixed earlier in July. Great idea but poorly executed and destined to fail from the begging. Only thing I’m grateful towards this game is that it’s the one that convinced me to never buy a game blind again.

Shadowrun for the Xbox 360/PC would of been a better example of a great online game that launched At the wrong time.
