EGM:
Silly though it may be to parade around pre-release awards as some kind of indicative acclaim, all those laurel wreaths on the back of Evolve‘s box and in its trailers are there for a reason. Rather than upholding the multiplayer status quo, Turtle Rock Studios’ first big game in nearly seven years sought to bring a fresh perspective to shooters, with an asymmetrical showdown between four hunters and a lone monster on a remote and dangerous sci-fi world. The concept was immediately appealing—that’s where those awards come in—but the main concern was whether or not Evolve could deliver a complete and engaging game around it.
In an effort to give all five reviewers a chance to fully discuss their opinions, we’ve put together a special Review Crew podcast that touches on every aspect of Evolve at length. Beneath that, you’ll find each editor’s detailed conclusions on their own class and how the experience impacted their opinion of the game as a whole.
Back in 2016, Turtle Rock announced that support for its 4v1 monster-hunting shooter Evolve would end but fans wouldn't let it die.
From NME: "Evolve: Stage 2 had its multiplayer servers shut down back in 2018, but today players are once again able to matchmake and join peer-to-peer multiplayer games.
Several months ago, peer-to-peer functionality was lost for Evolve Legacy, which was the only way fans of the series could play with friends. Upon a multitude of players reaching out to publisher 2K, the issue was eventually fixed earlier in July. It seems 2K have gone a step further now, and reinstated peer-to-peer and matchmaking functionality for Evolve: Stage 2 after four years."
Evolve is an asymmetrical multiplayer experience born at the tail-end of the wrong era, in the multiplayer world.
Great idea but poorly executed and destined to fail from the begging. Only thing I’m grateful towards this game is that it’s the one that convinced me to never buy a game blind again.
Shadowrun for the Xbox 360/PC would of been a better example of a great online game that launched At the wrong time.
Why do you guys cherry picks only the low scoring reviews for Evolve, there was already a handful of them but the only ones that surfaced on here are the ones below 7/10
A monstrous hype machine. It was a "me too!" title at E3 and it still is. Evolve my butt.
I would give this a 4.0 tops based on the microtransactions alone. How much longer will game journalists accept this? Oh right, they already have been giving cheap corporate greed the free pass for 7+ whopping years.
This game with medieval setting and dragons instead of monsters.
