Evolve can be fun, but can't be worth full price | Launch Impressions

Dealspwn: "The 4 vs 1 idea was too brilliant to die with THQ, so at its best Evolve is capable of some truly exceptional multiplayer matches.

I just wish this happened more than 50% of the time. Half of the games I've played were an absolute blast, but more often than not it's frustrating, unsatisfying or worse boring.

Our full review will be coming later this week (even if some of our peers couldn't wait to slap on a score straight away), but after several days' play online and off, I have to report that Evolve is a tough sell at full price."

looks mega boring and clunky and when i played the alpha and beta it felt clunky and boring.

also people was slagging titanfall off at launch etc for online only,no this and that yet evolve is even worse imo.

Blues Cowboy3756d ago (Edited 3756d ago )

It's actually not clunky IMHO - the mechanics (traversal, aiming etc) have been really refined for the final release - but it is often pretty boring and repetitive depending on who you're matchmade with. At least for the amount they're charging!

Kinda wonder what might have happened if Turtle Rock had been able to buy their own IP back during the THQ sell off, rather than 2K squashing their bid and taking it for themselves. As a $20-30 dollar Steam download with a smaller amount of polished content, it might have been an underground smash.

It'll still be a hit, though. Just wonder if anyone will be playing the console versions after the summer.

EDIT: You can play Evolve offline/with bots though!

It is weird as it is quiet for ages and a bit dull, and then all hell breaks loose. If they could of just figured out a way to make hell breaking loose happen more often this would be a top title.

As it stands though, you do a lot of wandering. I do like it though. It just has a very odd pace to it.

It's a total shame, but the writing was on the wall for me. Videogamer.com has a review on YouTube if anyone is interested? I'm not endorsing the site, but I found their Evolve review pretty agreeable.

Apparently, (I'm not 100%) they blocked SharePlay functionality, but at least you can play offline ...Looking at you Destiny & The Crew!

UKmilitia3756d ago

destiny and the crew??there both online world games, like mmo games they have to be conncted to the servers

Blues Cowboy3756d ago

Pretty sure that's exactly what snookiegamer is saying. "Looking at you" is an accusation!

burza19823756d ago

Boring was expected, so I'm glad I did not buy this game.

TheImprobableMulk3756d ago

It's a shame that the full game won't change the opinion I formed from the Alpha, if this article is anything to go by. Finding the right balance of players who know what they're doing alongside a capable monster proved too inconsistent, especially at a AAA price point.

It might be something I consider once the price drops though, but I'm definitely steering clear for now.

Blues Cowboy3756d ago

"especially at a AAA price point."

I think that's the key really. Developing this as a AAA title rather than a more appropriate budget download supported with DLC would have surely been a better idea, but no, gotta grab that $60+.

From the article: "My review copy was provided by 2K, but unlike most other sites, we don't forget that games actually cost money." Not saying that all sites should factor RRP into reviews, but value has got to be a consideration here especially with the ridiculous amount of DLC/MTs.

"It might be something I consider once the price drops though,"

Yeah. Just be aware that console multiplayer shooters really don't retain their player bases for long if you're not considering the PC version.

So what games do use shareplay?,so far all i hear is how every other game is blocked.

Evolve or Die: The final days of the follow-up to Left 4 Dead

Back in 2016, Turtle Rock announced that support for its 4v1 monster-hunting shooter Evolve would end but fans wouldn't let it die.

‘Evolve: Stage 2’ is back from the dead as peer-to-peer servers come back online

From NME: "Evolve: Stage 2 had its multiplayer servers shut down back in 2018, but today players are once again able to matchmake and join peer-to-peer multiplayer games.

Several months ago, peer-to-peer functionality was lost for Evolve Legacy, which was the only way fans of the series could play with friends. Upon a multitude of players reaching out to publisher 2K, the issue was eventually fixed earlier in July. It seems 2K have gone a step further now, and reinstated peer-to-peer and matchmaking functionality for Evolve: Stage 2 after four years."

^^this, I have so many awesome skins on Xbox that I’d rather not lose

Germaximus1032d ago

Yes so far because it's just the servers alone coming on and the console version never had the free-to-play update.

I imagine if they find people playing the PC version and enough players are enjoying it then they'd probably reconsider opening console as well but I wouldn't count on it.

The game was epic as a monster. Hunters were really boring to play as to me.

LordoftheCritics1032d ago

I used to play this a bit.

Was kinda fun.

Great idea but poorly executed and destined to fail from the begging. Only thing I’m grateful towards this game is that it’s the one that convinced me to never buy a game blind again.

Shadowrun for the Xbox 360/PC would of been a better example of a great online game that launched At the wrong time.

Livingthedream1501d ago

Shadow Run was fantastic! Would probably do alot better now.

DaveZero1501d ago

Is this a new evolve game??
