Halo 5 Guardians is Going to Make Fans Angry

Drew from GuG writes: I just spent the latter half of my day playing Halo 5 Guardians Multiplayer Beta on Xbox One. I was invited into the beta early because I am an Xbox Dashboard preview user.

I fired up Halo 5 and jumped right into a 4 v 4 Slayer match and that is when I stopped playing all I know as Halo. Sure all of the Halo familiarities are there. The look and feel for the most part is what we have all come to love about Halo, even the reboots. The problem is that this game plays like a combination of Halo and Call of Duty with a little bit of Titanfall mixed in. If Halo 5 is anything like a Halo game in the franchise, it would be most similar to Halo: Reach.

While i believe fans will be pissed but the change is needed to keep things fresh but then again what made Halo unique was its different gameplay from your usual fps and am not really sure ADS should be in the game because it feels the game is now just another fps.

voodoochild3463563d ago

Change is needed to make fans find another franchise that's willing to stay unique and not chase an audience that wants cod and that's it. People who want to play halo want to play halo.

Naga3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

Look, I just fundamentally disagree with the author's conclusions. The game feels, at its core, like the Halo we have known and loved. However, it is slightly more evolved and slightly more advanced in the right way. ADS is cosmetic, and I hardly use it. Sprinting's drawbacks make it a tactical decision rather than the go-to. Clambering is a fantastic addition that really makes maneuvering around the map less of a jumblef**k by eliminating the weird crouch-jumping we've been used to. The weapons are sublime, the two maps are excellent, and the reduction of aim-assist really separates the men from the boys.

Even my wife, as she watched me play, was downright impressed. She went so far as to say, "It's like they took the soul of Halo 2 and put it in a new body."

I've been playing it all evening, and I think it's bloody fantastic.

Gazondaily3563d ago

The game does a GREAT job of sticking faithfully to the old formula whilst also bringing change.

If.people are going to moan about how different this is then these people want nothing more than a reskin of the old games.

4Sh0w3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

Naga and Septic you both nailed it...and I don't see many long time Halo fans who are actually in the early Beta access complaining. Actually if they didn't implement changes that really help to evolve Halo's gameplay then the naysayers would swear it's the same old Halo, nothing new. I'm all for games maintaining their identity but when you're on the 5th main iteration of a huge franchise you should be trying to completely outdo what's come before in more ways than just "1080p sharper graphics!" Who wants devs to just play it safe and make a next gen Halo with just like last gen Halo's with a different skin???....I've been playing the Halo5 Beta with small breaks since yesterday and it feels like Halo but it also feels fresh, its got a new raw edge to it and it seems the vast majority who have actually **played it**, think it's alot of fun= ultimately that's what counts.

Lol, the forums are blowing up with fans praising the game...where is this "anger"?, aside from a few trolls who always have something negative to say about anything xbox related I see almost universal praise, article sounds like stealth trolling masked behind "concern".

redwin3563d ago

I've been playing it and it feels great, other than the match making issues and time between matches (that is why we have a beta, so they can fix it) I think it's a hit. I can not wait for the story mode so I can get familiar with all the new features. To be honest, I'm wishing for an open world but that would upset people even more. Wouldn't it?

DeadlyOreo3563d ago

This Halo has clearly been Cod-ified. It looks nothing like Halo, people who state otherwise need their eyes checked. It's silly to blindly love this just because it's Halo, when they've changed the formula for the worse.

pompombrum3563d ago

After watching a few twitch streams of the beta, when my friend asked me (long time halo fan)what I thought, I told him I'm downloading and installing CS:GO. I wanted a halo game, something different from the other shooters out there and the streams just made me think I'm better off throwing in the towel and going back to CS.

After playing 9 matches in the beta though, my opinion changed dramatically. The game is a lot of fun and still fundamentally feels like halo. Maybe I'm still in the honeymoon period with it but ultimately I think most halo fans can see the potential in it. Still having said that, I still think sprint needs to go, the size of the maps and the nerfs they done to sprint makes it almost pointless being in the game, remove that and up the base movement speed and we'll have a fantastic halo game.

xtremeimport3563d ago

yup.
I want my Halo to feel and play like Halo.No change is needed.

FriedGoat3563d ago

I'm thinking the same as Aibreeze.

My favourite halo is Halo 3, I played the multiplayer a hell of a lot. Now I haven't played halo 5 beta, i've only seen it, but to me it looks faster paced and it SOUNDS like COD.

I've watched a few hours and its actually quite worrying for the future of the franchise. I want Halo, not COD:Space Warefare.

Gaming1013563d ago

This is just ridiculous. Halo didn't have aiming down sights and neither did most other FPS games of the time.

Times changed, Call of Duty became super popular, and ADS is in everything now. We all love it and it feels archaic like Counterstrike when an FPS doesn't have it. It ads realism and immersion, makes guns vary in accuracy, ads depth, I mean what's not to like? It's what you're doing in the game that must differ from other games to be original. The story, the mission design, the art direction. Complaining that the game isn't archaic with out of date gameplay is stupid.

Ah, as always....every time positive XO news appear, few hours later n4g gets flooded with articles saying how that particular things sucks.

Blaze9293563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

im a halo fan and I was far from angry. Only thing that got me angry is the fact the game is still a year away

in fact, i actually read this article to see why the author thinks this. sounds like a bunch of nothing

LoneWolf0193563d ago

dont like ads? dont use it simple as that. Its not going to help someone if they are going up against a seasoned halo vet 1v1. I played about 4 matches and I rarely touch ads just like the past. Dont need it in Halo, plus its just a reskin of what it has always been.

ChronoJoe3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

I think change was needed in terms of new weapons, maps, dynamics... etc... but not fundamentally to the gameplay mechanics / controls. They underpin the experience so fundamentally, that any significant modification risks spoiling what made Halo brilliant in the first place.

Plus, if you're going to incorporate changes, for the love god don't just copy them from other games (dashing mechanic).

otherZinc3563d ago (Edited 3563d ago )

LMAO!

That Halo 5 Beta was fantastic. There's no problem here. I played the game exactly as I did years ago, except for new weapons & running.

Maybe if the PlayStation Experience offered a beta of Unchated 4, this author wouldn't need to troll so hard.

Thanks M$, you're "for the gamer". Can't wait to play the other maps soon.

ziggurcat3562d ago

"Maybe if the PlayStation Experience offered a beta of Unchated 4..."

uncharted 4 was shown in its pre-alpha development stage. a beta doesn't exist yet. perhaps if you knew the difference between pre-alpha and beta, you wouldn't need to troll so hard.

"That Halo 5 Beta was fantastic. There's no problem here."

that's your opinion, and the author's opinion begged to differ. and that difference of opinion, which is based on actual experience, not some blind hatred for a system you don't even, is not trolling in any sense of the word.

DLConspiracy3563d ago

I think some people forget that Halo had jump packs before COD or Titanfall. The beta is nothing extraordinarily new. Its minor tweaks. At no point did I feel like I was playing anything else. ADS is completely optional and if you get hit while using it you cannot aim. Mantle seems to be the only drastic change and it felt like it worked well.

I don't get the COD comparison. Even if it was so similar as some say.. Do you just want a reskinned HALO? If they did that people would complain its nothing new and that rag on it for being unoriginal and boring.

ChronoJoe3563d ago

Halo didn't have air dashing, before COD or Titanfall though. It might have had jump or jetpacks, but not airdashing.

I'm not saying it's necessary a terrible implementation, but I think it is intentionally following recent trends in the multiplayer space. FPS lately have had a focus on mobility, and Halo is following suit. I don't think there's anything wrong with that so long as they make sure the game stays true to its roots at the same time.

DLConspiracy3563d ago

@chrono

I definitely think they stayed with its roots. It feels the same with a few optional perks. It at least keeps it fresh. The way I feel I have been playing halo long enough that a freshener is most welcomed. If people don't like it then they can play the master chief collection till the end of time. I just feel the game needs to grow and the changes thus far do not feel intrusive on its roots. Otherwise its just a reskinned copy of a copy of a copy...

Halo fanboys will forever live in the past. Don't like the changes? Then go play the MCC. Sprint,ADS,etc have all been the standards for over a decade now. Going back and playing the HALO 2 anniversary was nice and nostalgic and all, but it was very outdated. Personally, I think Halo is done multiplayer wise. The story will still be fun I'm sure, but the online is on life alert. This game doesn't look too different than Halo 4 and we all know what happened with that games population. Halo needs a major overhaul if it wants to compete with the big guns like Call of Duty,Battlefield, etc.

Monstar3563d ago

you mean it needs the variety of COD/BF games...the added perks, weapons, upgrades and all the extra modification, etc. I fully agree with Halo's MP being pretty much dated.

But keep in mind Halo 5 plays like COD now...just needs more to it as i've mentioned.

Kavorklestein3563d ago

Battlefield isn't a bigger gun than Halo.
Sure, it's multi-plat, but that doesn't really mean it's better or bigger, no matter if it sells a lot.
Call of Duty is a big gun, but it gets hate too.. everything gets hated on at some point I suppose.

On topic: This article is stupid.
Most people who were ready to complain about ADS got that out of their system weeks ago when the beta was shown for the first time. I think most people will welcome the change as long as it still FEELS like Halo, which, MOST people say it DOES.

FanboyKilla3563d ago

lol im a fan, and it made me happy. sooooooo..... nice try. halo is comeing, and as it stands now its awesome. hopefully it continues to get better. at least we are playing it, helping shape the game. instead of watching vids and reading articles about it. no hype just game. game on.

No_Limit3563d ago

Stop whining...the beta has been getting great feesback so far and I am sick of people wanting to stick with the old gameplay 100% to the tee and not let developers try new things and advance the series forward.

I compare this to music. If I want to listen to the old metallica, I'll listen to Master of Puppets or Injustice for all...or in this case Halo 1,2,3 from the MCC that was just released. If I am still a fan of Metallica, I'll give their new record, Death Magnetic, a chance. It may not be the same as previous Metallica albums, but is it any good and still represent the spirit of the band that I love? The answer is yes! It is not like they had released a country album but it is still "in your face" hardrock heavy metal even if it is not the same music arrangement as the old songs.

For Halo and any other games for that matter, changes sometimes is good and rejuvenate a franchise. Zelda, for example, went through many gameplay changes over the years and the series keep on reinventing itself and the next game should also do the same for the series. If you want Halo 2 or 3 MP, MS gave you that with the relase of MCC that is out now, and if you want a new chapter of Halo, that is what Halo 5 is.

People need to put that in perspective and not cry about anything that is added to the game as a negative all the time. I am playing the preview of the game for the past couple of days and the smoothness, speed, and the new play mechanic are really tight and I can't imagine ever goong back to the Halo 2 MP after this. It still has the same Halo spirit and people calling it a COD clone don't know what they are talking about until they try both games and see for themselves.

souldestroyer143563d ago

Omg don't compare any halo game to St. Anger lol

Isn't this the foundation for your next Xbox?
This is exactly what some of us have been talking about...a way to bridge existing console users into a Xbox branded PC

crazyCoconuts12d ago

I mean.... It would be the end of Xbox.
But at least you'll have a way to play the games you've paid for on new hardware

porkChop12d ago

How is this the foundation for the next Xbox?

Profchaos12d ago

It's been talked about by industry insiders that the next Xbox will not be a Xbox as we know it (traditional closed ecosystem) but more in line with the steamdeck and would allow multiple marketplaces and such as steam to run on it like how the ru has forced iOS to adopt outside marketplaces.

In short think of the nextbox to be more like a steamdeck and less like a xbox

neutralgamer199213d ago

I am just astonished that MS wants to make as much money as Xbox as possible yet so many of their older games aren’t on PC

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

kingnick557d ago

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub556d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91556d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris556d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer556d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

I mean, the deal is alright… Unfortunately for me the Serious S doesn’t have a disk drive and unfortunately for Gamestop a lot of those games are on or have been on Gamepass/PSNow.

Sgt_Slaughter798d ago

Given the nature of backwards compatibility on new systems, this is a great sale in case you missed out on some gems from last gen.

Mandingo2020798d ago

Most of the games on Xbox are on game pass. The Switch games in this sale are trash c'mon farming simulator that's laughable. The PS4 games should be cheaper. I can't wait for the GameStop going out of business liquidation sale.

neutralgamer1992797d ago

Seriously man I don't get the hate on GS and I guess you want even less options and give more control to the publishers

And you want thousands of people to lose their jobs because you don't like a company. One thing I have noticed is how most who hate on GS haven't shopped at the actual stores in years. Many who hate on GS have also done so listening to others negative stories or experiences. People on YT want clicks and hating on GS is the cool thing

SurgicalMenace797d ago

It's not people's hate that would lose people's jobs, it's the shady business practices of the company. So what you're saying is that because people work there individuals should just support what they don't want to? Sound advice; Hitler too had supporters, employees, and advocates but people go around hating him too. They only hate because of other people's bad stories or experiences; they only spoke bad about him because they wanted attention. It's been decades; lets give his way another go. With your logic anything could be made to sound good.🤷🏾‍♂️

neutralgamer1992797d ago

SurgicalMenace

Seriously you used Hitler as an example to say company has shady practices

You don't have to shop at GS there are many other retailers. I shop there and vast majority of my experiences have been positive and most of the employees are super nice

And none of those game you speak of you actually own as they are digital not physical & would cost more than $20 as the subscription costs more than that.

Mandingo2020797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

You know you can get game pass ultimate codes for the low on cdkeys or g2a right? You don't need to have a subscription 😂. GS is trash and I'd rather support the mom and pop game store here instead.

BlackTar187797d ago

Why are you people so full of hate? GameStop gives people jobs and provides a physical appearance to see things in the flesh and not just some soulless online experience.

Mandingo2020797d ago

You can get physical at mom and pop game stores plus you can get it online. GS is trash

neutralgamer1992797d ago

Because Mom and Pop shops cost two to three times more for the same product Angie the answer

BlackTar187797d ago (Edited 797d ago )

Mom and pop stores cost more and have even harder time competing against the internet. Also lie to me and tell you have a couple mom and pop stores near you selling games then lie and tell me you shop there.

IanTH797d ago

These sales, while potentially great, really struggle to be valuable given you can't easily parse what games are in stock. You can't just say "only show what is online & what are in my nearby stores". Probably 60-75% of these games in these massive lists are out of stock for shipping, and out of stock locally. It makes it a chore to find anything you'd want, much less 4 of them, much less enough if you wanted to get to a free shipping tier. It's a bummer.
