Xbox One vs PS4 - both cost £329, which should you buy?

It was always going to be a hard-fought battle for supremacy in the next-gen console war, but with the Xbox One and PS4, Microsoft and Sony have gone all-out to make sure that their console dominates. Since they launched last year, Sony has taken an early lead with the PS4 outselling the Xbox One by around 50 per cent. However, there's a good argument that a lot of that has to do with the Xbox One's high launch price, because it shipped with Kinect. Now you don't need Kinect and both consoles cost just £329 it's not so easy to pick which one you should buy.

and yes i own a xbone,ps4,wii u, pc and the one that gets no attention is ps4 because its garbage

xHeavYx3877d ago

I'd say your poor attempt at trolling is garbage

joel_c173877d ago

Lol 2006 called - it wants its complaints back.

TheSaint3877d ago

Still trotting out that same old garbage, PSN works fine. Always has done.

Funantic13877d ago

The X1 has more to offer right now and this year. Also the X1 has the better security online and more frequent updates. I don't have time for servers being down or hacked. And I'm not impressed with the indies. The X1 has higher rated games too. Easy choice...Xbox One. So easy a cave man can do it.

bazinga_913877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

"Xbox has higher rated games"

Nope!

"I am not impressed by indies"

But I bet you are impressed by Cuphead and Below.

As for people that set some standard for next gen console gaming, they won't stoop low to play games in 720p in 2014. Lol!
So yeah, choice was easy for people. Ps4 hasn't got the lead of 5million for nothing.

DanzoSAMA3877d ago

u forget a lot of games mate.
Scale Bound
Dragons Age (with timed exclusive content)
Phantom Dust
Evolve (with exclusive content)
Fifa (with exclusive legendary players)

maybe I forget some games..

of course we don't add indie games in the list. lol

ITPython3877d ago

The PS4 is the obvious choice for anybody without a bias. It makes the most sense to buy a PS4 first, and the XB1 second. Why?

Well the PS4 has the better performing and looking multiplats. And you also get a bonus helping of exclusives as well. Whereas with the XB1, the only reason to buy one is for the exclusives. Nobody in their right mind buys an XB1 for the lesser performing multiplats. And it would be even more of a stretch to buy the XB1 just for the handful of lackluster exclusives it has so far.

So while the XB1 builds it's exclusive library, you play the best looking and performing version of multiplats (on consoles) and also enjoy all of the amazing exclusives from Sony. Then 3-5 years down the road when the XB1 finally has amassed a decent mix of exclusives, you buy it as well.

IMO it is common sense.

RedstonerMC3877d ago

Shit i had a bias towards microsoft and xbox and i still bought a ps4. It's just the logical decision.

WilDRangeRfc3877d ago

Why dismiss other factors such as 1.Do you want to play with your friends? 2. The superior online network 3. Way better quality voice chat PS4 quality is bad 4. The better controller that stays in one piece and battery lasts way longer
I have both consoles but it comes down to way more than just 1080p vs 900p my friend they are both high quality consoles and both have pro,s and cons

Christopher3877d ago

@WilDRangeRfc: I'll leave everything alone with your comment other than one item: quality of voice chat. It's damn clear and easy to use on PSN as far as I'm concerned. Been using it a ton in Destiny and haven't had any problems at all other than a handful of people who have crappy mics that pic up a ton of noise.

tinynuggins3877d ago

I'd say go for Xbox one for 2014 and 2015 while saving for a ps4 for late 2015.

AngelicIceDiamond3877d ago

Which one should you buy? Whatever console you like the games on and online service suits you.

The power of the preference and opinion are beautiful.

DOMination-3877d ago

Had both since launch but Horizon 2 will be the first game I buy for xb1. At the same price its a no brainer for me. Ps4 has better multiplats and a good range of games coming out.

Manic20143877d ago

Both, but for single console purchase, the one which has the most suitable games of your choice. Eventually though both console will provide more diverse library than there is currently.

NukaCola3877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

WoW 329 British Pounds is over $530 US bucks. That's too rich for me. So for that, you want to get the most value for your money, and I'd go with the tried and true company who has delivered GOTY winners and ground breaking gaming revolution/experiences since 1995.

hkgamer3877d ago

which is why when people from uk see US people complain about prices, it kinda pisses us off because we pay a lot more.

FarEastOrient3877d ago

I dont base my console purchase on the games that come out in the first year. MS always was good at foreplay, but lack long term stamina.

Fatal-Aim3877d ago

I could not have said it any better. i have been saying this from the start. people seem to have a brain relapse every single time Sony launches a new console. they always start off with a small selection, and after about a year and onward, they start blowing the doors off.

That was then, this is now.

Bathyj3877d ago (Edited 3877d ago )

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

Fool me thrice, well you need to just have a good hard look at your decision making process.

2 previous generations have shown once MS realises they cant win, they dump their customers like a used something gross. What happens now that they know that in the first year?

tinynuggins3877d ago

Then buy it when Sony starts to blow the doors off. Until then go with xbox one.

GodGinrai3876d ago

"2 previous generations have shown once MS realises they cant win, they dump their customers like a used something gross."

the first Xbox life got cut short because of a sour deal with Nvidia. The second Xbox has seen titanfall, forza horizon and few F2P games, this year. All things considered I would have to dissagree with you about dumping thier customers. In the first instance they had no choice. In the second instance, the xbox 360 is in its ninth year and still has some descent games coming out. Even though that lack of 1st party studios started to catch up on them in these last few years. But they seem to be taking notes these days. which is good. Some great XB1 exclusive this fall..Next E3 will be an interesting spectacle.

all said And done. I enjoy My XB1 and have not regretted it. I say that as somebody who acknowledges their misteps in the later life of the X360 and the poor choices made in the initial XB1 unveiling. It will take a little while to shake off the remains of Matrick's ghost but, they are getting there, slowly.

They retired Ken Kutaragi, moved away from overly expensive custom hardware, and went with more traditional hardware available to the market and listened to developer needs.

Profchaos1d 4h ago

It's true but also PlayStation publicly came out and stated third party wasn't important to them.

ironic that what worked for them the previous generation caused them significant pain in the subsequent one.

The PS2 was actually a significant challenge to develop for far worse than the PS1 ever was but the competition at the time was struggling so much they couldn't make up the ground Dreamcast had a stigma of being a last gen console by the time the PS2 came around and looked inferior compared to games like grab Turismo 3, the GameCube and Xbox were still a ways away and PlayStation had the reputation as being the place to play it was a perfect storm for them and the GTA games not coming to Dreamcast and Sony's embrace really helped.

Third party basically drove PlayStation yi success over more capable consoles Xbox may have looked better at the time but it didn't have GTA 3, vc, Sa or the stories games the mainline entries didn't hit the Xbox until many years after being on PlayStation.

Then the PS3 with it's cell architecture ramped it up again and just hurt Devs they didn't focus on the GPU as much as they should have and they didn't realise their deals they made with IBM could have resulted in the cell architecture being shared with Microsoft which it was and it did help them develop the 360

But really the 90s and 2000s were a wild time for game consoles now it's a little boring it's all off the shelf components and everything is mostly the same

gunnerforlife1d 6h ago

After losing so many 3rd party exclusives, they buckled down and concentrated on amazing first party games! God of war 3, Killzone 2, resistance, uncharted, the last of us, MgS4, little big planet, demon souls and so many more games!! They won the gamers back by playing smart! Even though the media and all big gaming websites from ign, gamespot, kotaku etc were all against it!! I had fun with ps2, but it's ps3 where I really grew up and had the time of my life.

BlackCountryBob20h ago

It’s weird to look back on how even today the games media narrative was stuck in 2006 to say it was overpriced and had no games which was outsold by 360 (all incorrect).

In many ways, it’s similar to how the Xbox One was never really able to move past the launch even though after a year or so it was an entirely different proposition (but Microsoft didn’t do nearly as good a job as Sony did to recover IMO).

gunnerforlife3h ago

I'm glad it received the hate from western media! It humbled them quite a lot and forced them to buckle down and concentrate where it mattered most! Games games games!! And they learned a lot from their mistakes with ps3 and they made one of the greatest consoles ever in ps4!!

So true! Where Sony realised their mistakes and corrected everything, MS were either too arrogant to change course or just didn't have the tools/capabilities to correct course and get back to basics! Games games games! Which is sad because with no rival, Sony this generation has stagnated a lot!! This generation is a write off in my books!!!

OhReginald16h ago

I was committed to that whole generation. What turned Ps3 around from being a failure to a success was in 2009 with the releases of the first ps3 slim model with a cheaper price tag, the kevin butler marketing campaign, and a ton of 1st party AAA games that were critically acclaimed and loved by the fans like Uncharted 2 (this was a bigger deal than the first game), Killzone 2 (91 on metacritic), inFamous, LittleBigPlanet (a serious threat to mario at the time), Demon's Souls( it was very niche but the word of mouth and gamespots goty award helped it and helped ps3). The big game everyone that bought a ps3 was waiting for was mgs4 in 2008 and GT5 in 2010. Anyways I think the ps3 was way ahead of its time with the games I mentioned above and breakout hits like the last of us.

Microsoft wins FTC appeal challenging $69 billion Activision Blizzard deal

May 7 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected a legal challenge by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to Microsoft's (MSFT.O), opens new tab $69 billion purchase of “Call of Duty” maker Activision Blizzard.
The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower judge's order that said the FTC was not entitled to a preliminary injunction blocking the deal, which closed in 2023.

Final nail in FTC´s coffin!

It was a lost cause from the start and a waste of taxpayers money!

Reaper22_5d ago

Indeed. When sony got exposed with some of their deals it was pretty much game over.

Christopher5d ago

That's not at all how this works. Sony made deals Microsoft, the trillion dollar company couldn't? You think that's what won them this case?

This wasn't seen as a act of attempting to monopolize the industry. Plain and simple.

Obscure_Observer5d ago

"Indeed. When sony got exposed with some of their deals it was pretty much game over."

And now that MS is releasing all of its Xbox games for all platforms, Phil is free to buy whatever studio or publisher he wants and FTC won´t have a case to say sh!t.

Like I said; It´s final nail in their coffin!

-Foxtrot5d ago

S2Killinit4d ago

@Reaper22
What? Exposed? Deals? Stop talking gibberish.

On topic:
Hope MS’s xbox continues to go down the drain for this. I love how this deal was the nail in xbox’s coffin when some of the corporation worshippers here were hoping MS would deprive others from games that otherwise everyone would be able to play. Instead, MS was forced to put its own games on other platforms to pay for the billions they spent on this mergers/acquisitions. Hope they choke on it.

It was a lost cause once ms went multiplat, they cant be anti competitive if they release on everything......

DodoDojo5d ago

No bud this is an appeal, they already failed the first go and the FTC seeked to block the deal way before MS showed any signs of making their games multiplatform. Like most of the courts rulings, it just wasn't seen as the monopoly.

Reaper22_5d ago

Right. And they stated from the beginning that their intent was not to keep games off of plastation. Microsoft served subpoenas on Sony to produce documents and testimony related to the lawsuit, and the FTC ordered Sony to disclose information about its third-party exclusivity deals. And it exposed their dealings with other publishers to keep games off xbox and Gamepass. That is what helped them most in securing the deal.

PhillyDonJawn5d ago

Right, however 10 years from now (gen after next) ms could very well reverse that and get away with it. They'd already have made their money back from the purchase, any contract deal they signed would've be honored and finally expired

__y2jb4d ago

Let’s not rewrite history though. They only went multi platform because they were forced to. They failed to compete so badly it was that or close Xbox completely.

Wait... they were still not done with this deal?

Christopher5d ago

No. FTC has multiple appeals since then. It was very unlikely they would win any, but they still had them. People claiming it was over with the first judge ruling don't understand how the law works and what avenues the FTC had available to them even though appeals are quite normal.

1Victor4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

It goes like this in the USA first trial the court of appeals it can be a partial court of judges if so after you got another appeal to the full court then after goes the supreme with a non full court after it’s another appeal to the full court when the full court decide on it then it’s over till then anything can happen.
Edit I forgot to say that this is a simplified version of things it can take multiple years to get through all the appeals on both sides

JEECE5d ago

This FTC case provided fascinating insight into gamers' views on economics/politics. It's very common for gamers to blame capitalism for many of the negative trends in the industry, but as soon as the U.S. government started exercising one of the most recognized limitations on capitalism (monopoly regulation), most gamers turned into libertarians and starting spouting Republican talking points (or at least pre-Trump era Republican talking points, lol) on "government staying out of the way of private businesses."

red2tango4d ago

They weren't told how to think on this topic so it let them use their brains without being told what to think about a topic. They ended up being reasonable and rational.

Traecy5d ago

I remember when certain people here were saying they weren't going third party, guessing to recoup that 69 billion they are doing just that.

Reaper22_5d ago

They said the same about sony. Now you can play Playstation games on PC/ xbox.

TriniOutsider5d ago

What PlayStation is game is Xbox?

JEECE5d ago

@TriniOutsider

MLB The Show. But arguably that is a special case. The seemingly accepted story behind that is that MLB told Sony they had to start making the game multiplatform to keep the MLB license. I haven't ever read definitive proof that happened, but assuming that (or something like it) is true, that isn't really indicative of a multiplatform trend in the same way that MS's recent launches on PS5 are.

Traecy5d ago

The only PlayStation owned games on XB is Destiny 2 which was already multiplatform & MLB The Show & that's because it's licensed by the MLB & wanted the game multiplatform. XB first party legendary exclusives are going multiplatform as well as the new games that were supposed to be exclusive to the XB gaming console. It looks though the XB gaming console will have minimal timed exclusives to no exclusives at all.

InUrFoxHole5d ago

@TriniOutsider
Get those gloves ready my boy. Gonna need em to move those goal posts. Think with your brain not your gamer heart. You think sony sees ms making all this money and says.. ok get that without us. Help me out here my guy! Sony charged you for psn, then they put their games on pc. What do you think is going to happen next?

PanicMechanic5d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Well said, hahahaha that’s so smart and intelligent and not gaslighty my man. you can now definitely play a lot of Ps games on Xbox. That’s the argument. That’s the point. Well done. PS is going third party. Wow, congratulations, no one realised it. Emphasis again on: it’s PlayStation making the moves to put games on Xbox AND PC. I can’t think of another publisher that’s actually doing that…. Mmmmmmm…. Anyway. Only Sony is doing that and not anyone else, not at all.

Kekewei5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

To be honest as a long time ps gamer, this deal initially made me panic.

but if I had known that it make MS u-turn on exclusive strategy, I would have happily joined xbox fans supporting the acquisition.

Reaper22_5d ago

They never made a u-turn. Initially Microsoft offered sony a 10 year deal but they turned it down but eventually they agreed. They've always said they wouldn't keep games away from playstation. But that is something Sony was doing to them.

sinspirit5d ago

That's the thing. They said they did not aim to take games away from the competition with the acquisitions and that they weren't taking games away from PlayStation. But then they try to get Sony to sign a 10 year deal just to show to a court that they aren't keeping games away. Sony saw this as a tactic to make their acquisitions look like good faith but in reality they don't need to sign that 10 year contract. They just gotta keep developing games for the console. Then they still excluded games from Sony anyways which is what they wanted while saying they didn't. They are only now going third party because they couldn't monopolize the hardware side of things and they ruined their software sales by trying to make everything a service and now we see them continuously bumping the price and changing policies to stop losing money.

Kekewei5d ago

Yes they did. I mean I was worried about Elder Scrolls series leaving playstation those days, but now I can play Forza horizon and Gears of War on ps5… this is a crazy turn of events

InUrFoxHole5d ago

@Reaper22
You are 💯 correct however we also have to consider these companies lie all the time. Or make plans and change them

I'm kind of hoping they drop most hardware support here with a 'good enough console' next generation and focus more on being a publisher. Obviously that is doing well for them and they can still push cloud gaming since it's going to tons of smart TVS and devices. They're now the largest video game publisher in the world, if they aren't doing the most sales and pre-orders, then they would be in trouble. They aren't.

Lightning7711d ago

They're gonna try again with a new gen console. If they want to compete they need to actually be competive. Say games like Halo, Blade Elder Scrolls or whatever big game it is. Needs to only be on Xbox and PC. If those games go multiplat it needs to be after a few years or at least a year later definitely not 6 months as a good portion of ppl will wait. Knowing MS they'll probably try and compete, then when things don't go there way they pivot and change the metrics again.

crazyCoconuts11d ago

I don't think you're reading the tea leaves here. Leadership hasn't used the word "exclusive" in quite a while, and they're now boasting about PS sales. They're probably done with consoles and exclusive at this point.

DodoDojo11d ago

I don't think they'll try. They have been beating a dead horse for so long now and they have finally realized it isn't going nowhere.

Fearmonkey11d ago

MS is going to drop being hardware exclusive, they are going publisher and subscription. You will be able to buy a Xbox, but you will be able to play on any platform, that's their new goal. After the hit with Oblivion remastered and major sales on PS5, no more Xbox/PC exclusives long term..

rlow111d ago

I think with the latest price hike on their console, they’re well on their way to axing hardware.

Christopher11d ago

Hardware axing entirely is bad news. They've sold most of their hardware on the Series S this generation. I think if they capture a lower hardware market that can still buy games (especially on sale), they'll actually hit a good market considering how the economy is going. Especially in the U.S. People are going to want to keep gaming and streaming isn't that good for online gaming at all.

Lightning7711d ago

@crazy they've stated multiple times they're going another gen. The next gen Controller even got leaked.

Tired of repeating myself whenever it comes to this subject of Xbox having another gen.

IRetrouk11d ago

Xbox consoles are done, all we gonna get is some branded 3rd party shite at best, ms aint interested in being a console manufacturer no more, this much is obvious.

hiawa2311d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Microsoft has too much money for that. They are rumored to release a PC/console hybrid in 2026. They will push all you hope as a publisher while having new hardware next year, so the games will appear on their platform and every other platform which is good to me if the goal is to sell software. If that is where the money is why would anyone fault MS for that? The prices are going to be insane for the next PlayStation and console from Microsoft, though, but it is what they voted for, so this is what we got.

Profchaos10d ago

I think they have to at this point I'm sure they are developing new hardware because they still have to team on payroll but it's absolutely a hail mary play.

They want to try and shift the console to be more like a PC so development costs are drastically reduced you don't need your trams to develop a Xbox version if the PC version will already run jon your console ust have it preconfigured with the graphical settings to make it seem less PC like and job done using uwp apps.

I can see it working for a few years but eventually there will be problems like with the series s as pc hardware typically ages out faster than console hardware I guess the jury's out on how it goes when your console is forced architecture will it still be a development target 5 years later will it slow PC hardware growth if games have to account for such weak hardware 7 years on

Never said it was Microsoft´s master plan all along. But it is REALLY working for us, as the fact that you´ll be able to enjoy Xbox gamers isn´t killing us. Rather the contrary, we are happy that everybody is funding our games on Gamepass.

Specially now with the imminent new $80 price tag for Xbox first party games.

It is what it is.

IAMRealHooman10d ago

So xbox division can't afford to fund new xbox games on GP subscribers alone?
ooooh your in trouble imma tell papa phil and he's gonna take away your xbox card

IAMRealHooman11d ago

how about that massive price hike?

Relientk7711d ago

He loves it. Now he gets to support the trillion dollar company even more by giving them more of his money.

Reaper22_11d ago

I agree.. great news for Microsoft and tbe xbox brand. Your Playstation is now a xbox. Microsoft wasn't kidding around when they said xbox will be everywhere. Now they are laughing all the way to the bank. Imo sony needs to do similar things. They're putting their biggest titles on PC. Might as well bring them over to other consoles too. They aren't making much on console sales.

IAMRealHooman11d ago

Of course MS wants PlayStation owners, their is literally twice as many of them.

andy8511d ago

Theres been one game in the last few years that's been good. Indy. Long way to go before you start talking about their games and their quality

Bathyj11d ago

Xbox gamers really are the strangest demographic. Not so long ago you are all saying PlayStation isn't the competition Amazon is because Phil said so. You love to parrot what your corporate talking say. That wasn't actually true Xbox and PlayStation were in direct competition but because Xbox was losing so badly Phil had to act like they weren't.

Cut to present day and Xbox and PlayStation aren't competition because Xbox has no hardware presence it's zero. In fact Microsoft is now a third party publisher and they need PlayStation they don't need Xbox or Xbox gamers they need PlayStation gamers and PC gamers and mobile phone gamers and switch gamers.

You're here cheering for the fact you've become irrelevant because you think it's important that your uncle Phil is making money. You think PlayStation gamers are upset if Microsoft releases more good games in a year than sony does. when Microsoft makes a good game you shout take that playstation!

PlayStation gamers simply say thank you I will third party publisher that makes me games

Reaper22_11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

I think you're confused. Microsoft never saw Sony as their biggest competitor. They've reiterated it for years. Sony is doing the same thing by putting their biggest franchises on PC, which is OK with Microsoft. Their will be more playstaion games coming to Microsoft ecosystems. Maybe not to xbox consoles but playstation won't be the only place you can play their games. Kind of how it is now. I would bet that they are making plans to do just that but they probably fear the backlash from their fanbase which is silly because noone is gonna stop playing games just because it's on on another platform.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

"Cut to present day and Xbox and PlayStation aren't competition because Xbox has no hardware presence it's zero."

If that was remotely true you wouldn´t be so mad about Xbox gamers getting day one games on Gamepass that you have to pay full price for.

"PlayStation gamers simply say thank you I will third party publisher that makes me games"

And we´re thankful for Playstation gamers supporting Xbox games funding our day one games on Gamepass.

Like I said: Everybody wins.

We brought two of the biggest publishers in the world, cost thousands of people their livelihoods and consolidated a huge part of the industry, look how successful we are at gaming!

Top Secret Strategy for How to Become the Biggest Publisher in the World:
1. Buy everybody

The3faces11d ago

And this has been standard business practice in every industry. Don't hate the player hate the game! lol

Reaper22_11d ago

Buy everybody....if you can.

Obscure_Observer11d ago

I have no doubt that the vast majority of developers and studios will be looking at Microsoft as far job security is a concern.

Microsoft will allow its studios to release their games to every single platform, which means more investment on new games, more money, more jobs positions, better payment, benefits and recognition among gamers worldwide.

You though MS would crash and burn

You want MS to leave gaming forever but GAMERS clearly wants otherwise.

You said MS doesn´t know how to make great games but Xbox games dominating sales on Playstation clearly says otherwise.

Now you also have Playstation gamers to blame for helping the rich to get richer.

I warned you. You were on a fool´s errand all the time.

Now all you can do is watch as MS and Xbox gaming grows bigger and better than ever and release games for everyone!

crazyCoconuts11d ago

At the end of this road, Bethesda, Activision, etc, will still be releasing games for everyone and Xbox consoles will be no more.

If that's what you claim to have foreseen, then congratulations, you win.

MrDead11d ago

You think three major publishers no longer competing and thousands fired to feed the piggies at MS is a good thing, I don't.

More and more owned by fewer and fewer is what you're cheering for, all that leads to is $80 first party games kid.

When you have to say that something was a success, it means it wasn't
