Which Console is Doing Better: Wii U or Xbox One?

Gamer Headlines: A recent editorial made some comparisons between the Xbox One and the Wii U. Several commenters to that editorial on Gamer Headlines and elsewhere challenged the comparison, even claiming that it is actually doing worse than the Wii U. So which is doing better: Wii U or Xbox One? This article looks at the numbers.

XB1 has some nice exclusives but Nintendo's look more interesting to me. Third party support is a win for Xbox, but I think most people will go for a PS4 or PC for those. Based on that I'm gonna have to go Wii U. But that's only after PS4 IMO.

Nintendo's biggest strength is their stable of characters. Unfortunately, that's about all they have in this generation. I will probably buy a Wii U when the new Zelda game comes out (not Hyrule Warriors) because by then there will be enough games on the system to make it worth the investment.

That's a pretty good way to go about it. There might be another price drop by then as well. I got mine right around when Mario Kart came out and got a heck of a deal on it too. I wanted it mainly for Mario Kart and Smash Bros., but I also want to get Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors. For me there's enough and hopefully I can even get a PS4 by next year. I'm basically good for the generation after that. :)

how do we determine which console is best?

By the amount of sales generated, or by the quality of the games?

Well, since this is gaming we are dealing with,the determental factor that reveals who is best when it comes to (gaming), is obviously going to be the quality of the games, not how much a games sells lol.

Does XB1 or PS4 have a game more challenging than DK Tropical Freeze for wiiU?

Does XB1 or PS4 have a higher quality, more imaginative game than Super Mario 3D World? A game praised by game designers world wide ? Already being called game of this generation.

Did XB1 or PS4 change gaming like the wiiU did with the gaming pad? no more split screen?

Does XB1 or PS4 have a more imaginative, better looking, more Adult game than Bayonetta 2 for wiiU?

Yeah. I feel the same way except with the PS4. I usually buy a Sony console at the end of a generation for the exclusives.

I'd say the fanbase held them accountable for a lot of their screw-ups, and that they EARNED their climb back up to the positive state of slow recovery they are currently in.
Their future is looking brighter by the day, and they've earned it through a lot of changing how they did things.

Well said. I remember a comment war a year or so ago when people were saying nintendo fans would buy a system with no momentum like the Wii U and i was like "Have you seen these sales? Nintendo fans ain't buying crap."

If people ate up the Wii U like they did the Wii, i doubt the system would be half as appealing to hardcore fans. They'd just sit on their asses and count money like they did most of 7th gen. Now they have to prove themselves to fans, and that's good for us.

No, just smart enough to realise when Nintendo has made up for some of their screw ups and to give them what they've earned.
Fans waited until the console had more to it to deserve sales.
If Nintendo makes the same mistakes next gen(God forbid), you can count on those same players holding them accountable once more

If by that you mean the same miniscule amount of early adopters and few others, then possible, but not likely.
But they'll have fewer than before if the pull the same stunts again, and that's something I'd put money on.

Does the Wii U have as much trouble pushing 1080p rez like the Bone? The Wii U has a nice sales lead on it. But it came out a year or two b4.

Please, dond all act like 1080p is a must have or games are not good. People who only talk about 1080p really dont have any idea about graphics. I bet so many games actually look worse, because Devs try to feed people with 1080p 60fps and for that actually they lower stuff like Shadows, Anti Aliasing and filtering.

Wii U came a year before by the way. But this is actually no argument, because consoles tend to start to sell, when its competitors are out. Before you only had third party exclusives, which were mostly bad ports of games from old gen, so why wouldve anyone bought a Wii U back then? Now is a different story.

Consoles are about the games, if graphics are so important, then get a PC.

Xbox ONE isn't even a year old yet and it's done over 5 mill..

yet we are asking this question...

Without third party support, it's near impossible to do great numbers by the end of a generation.

I dont get why you people have to lie about the numbers? It has been out 1 year longer, not 1 month more or less. So why do you guys say 2 years? And 3rd Parties are the reason, why nintendo is in this mess right now. They started their console, only with 3rd party games, because they wanted to make a good third party maschine and it didnt sell well. If nintendo had a Zelda game, a Mario Kart or something of that caliber out during release, it wouldve been a totally different story.

Absolutely right, it's been one year. But in the 9 months they've both been on sale, XOne has come within striking distance of Wii U's numbers *despite* Wii U's one year lead.

And I agree somewhat about the third party. Nintendo was stupid not to launch with either Super Mario title, a Zelda title, or (probably smartest) Mario Kart 8. I think a lot of people would have bought in early if Kart had been there from launch.

Here's the thing, though; Nintendo didn't do anything with that one year lead.
Nor did the third parties who lied so badly about showing proper support for the console.

Both let the console flounder; all it got was the normal boost from early adopters, and that was it up until recently.

So saying that the xbone has come close *despite* that year holds little to no value. The wii u might as well have launched a year later, for all the good that first year did it.

Wow an actual article without any sort of fanboyism or obvious bias? Never thought I'd see the day. Although I do have to nitpick one thing: Smash Bros. is not a Mario game. Even if you are the type to lump Mario Kart and Mario Golf etc. into the "Mario game" genre, you cannot call SSB the same. It would be like calling Playstation Allstars a God of War game or an Uncharted game just because it has those characters in it.

At this point I have a PC not very powerful (only to play emulations and other games) PS4, PS3, PSvita, 3DS and all the previous major consoles.
My next buy is going to be a WiiU.

Regardless of what is selling best at the moment if you think that the Xbox One is going to have sold less than the WiiU by the end of the generation you're being blinded by the sales of the original Wii.

The WiiU now has the kind of tech that the original Wii could have done with. The WiiU is paying for the overblown success of the Wii. Many people were Wii'd out a long time ago. It's not necessarily fair with its upcoming line up
but once Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break come out you've got Insomniac and Remedy fans who might buy an Xbox One for just one game- plus the ability to play more of the types of multiformat games that they might want to play than will be available on the WiiU. Like Dying Light for instance.
And ZombiU might be nice but it's doing something a little more old school in that genre.

Nintendo have themselves partly to blame for allowing all the shovelware on the Wii. As I always think - not every N64 owner owned a Gamecube and, in turn, not every Gamecube owner owned a Wii. As the core from those earlier days diminishes from buying your products you either rely on the loyalty of your new fans or a steady supply of new fans. And, after you were flavour of the season for a bit with the Wii, both are probably sadly spending longer playing mobile phone games and on Facebook.

But Nintendo are now doing it right with the likes of Splatoon and Toad Treasure Trackers. They rely on cute, quirky, novelties masterfully executed in abundance to get people to buy their consoles.
