I went into the article fully expecting the "jill, the master of unlocking" quote, and was not disappointed.

Honorable mention should go to Silent Hill.

There's something about that line delivery that's off and sounds cheesy.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the line “I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.” Idiots just found it funny and repeated it until we got sick of hearing it.

How about anything from Bulletstorm, a game written by 13 year olds trapped in adults' bodies?

Seriously, nothing wrong with the line? It's super cheesy and the game itself repeats that line to death.

That's a general fault of open world games' NPC chatter, not the line itself.

Did EVERY guard in Skyrim used to be an adventurer whose journeying days were cut short by knee-seeking arrows?

Actually, yes, because that's typically how it's programmed. Loads of open world games are like that.

But I'll agree that it's odd for one of the pieces of chatter to be a life story. All of the guards being former adventurers with knee injuries is pretty funny. But all constantly repeated lines that you hear take you out of the game whether the context is odd or not.

I just think there are MUCH worse lines than that, like 90% of the ones uttered in Bulletstorm. If it hadn't spawned a meme, we wouldn't even be talking about it.
