I have Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive in my PS4!

Really easy to install and my PS4 boot and loading times are pretty fast too! Highly recommend going with a Hybrid SSD.

hollabox3945d ago (Edited 3945d ago )

I wonder if WD Black Dual 1TB hybrid will work in my PS4. Otherwise I'm looking at Crucial M500 960GB SSD for around $400. I probably wouldn't go much faster than that or more expensive. PS4 Sata is only 2 or 3GBps so buying Samsung 830-850Pro is out of the question. I currently have Crucial M500 480GB connected to my XB1, will buy another SSD come July 21st (Samsung 850 Pro 512 GB), and upgrade my PS4 next month to Crucial M500 960GB. I guess the M550 1TB is not too much more.

madjedi3944d ago (Edited 3944d ago )

The wd hybrid really isn't worth the cost and going with a ssd is kinda overkill. The time difference between a ssd and a hybrid drive isn't anything worth the premium on the ps4.

I wish seagate would release a 2 or 3 tb hybrid labtop drive, then i would upgrade.

It's your money, but the ssd will always be held back by the ps4's sata 2 interface.

That is the HD I put in mine excellent choice

hiawa233945d ago

I have the same, and I agree with everything you said..

I've been wanting that harddrive in my laptop for ages. Just haven't had a job for a while to save up for anything. Stock laptop drives are typically so slow. >.<

I'm going with a 1TB Toshiba hard drive. Just ordered one last week. Used a Toshiba drive to upgrade my 1st ps3 3 years ago and it deals with the build up of heat pretty well, so I expect similar performance on my PS4.

loopygames3945d ago

Sony reps have been instructed to not recommend SSD or Hybrid SSD for use with the PS4.

"Let me tell you that the PS4 does support Solid State Drives and Hybrid Drives. However we do not recommend to install those kinds of HDD to a PS4 because of the frequency the PS4 read/write on the HDD. The PS4 is constantly reading and writing on the HDD so a Solid State Drive will last less time than a normal HDD. That is the reason why we do not recommend to install those kind of HDD to the PS4."

There's a lot of dispute about this.

Supposedly for modern SSDs, this isn't an issue. At least not an issue for the practical lifetime of the drive

MRMagoo1233945d ago

As far as I am aware and have been telling customers such at my pc shop, is that ssds just dont have as much read write as hdds, I can imagine its fine for pcs if you use it as a gaming drive or something but using one for the main drive including OS will kill it a lot faster than hdd. I have had a bunch of the older ssds come into the shop now completely dead and i would guess its probably about 85% that have been used for OS and not just storage.

The newest drives havent been out long enough at the mo to get a proper idea.

uth113945d ago

yeah, I've heard both sides. Seems like more people say it isn't a concern.

But I still haven't taken the SSD plunge in my own PC, partly due to this issue and partly bc they aren't cost-effective enough yet

GameSpawn3945d ago

It really depends on if the PS4 (and PS3) support something similar to TRIM to hold off writes until a full block can be written.

Regardless, modern SSDs have been manufactured to fail at such a slow rate you can easily get 4-5 years of use with constant reads and writes (it's the writes that do more damage) before too many blocks die causing total drive failure.

I imagine Hybrid Drives have fail-safes that just do not use the cache as much if the SSD degrades, however Hybrid drives are still prone to the same failures as conventional hard drives if too many of the sectors fail to retain data causing uncorrectable errors.

What am I getting to? Every hard drive, conventional, hybrid, SSD, or otherwise, is going to fail. What matters is manufacturing quality and mean time between failures (MTF).

Seagate's professional line of drives have treated me well over the years. Working in a service center that does warranty replacements, I cannot speak highly of Toshiba, Hitachi, HGST (also Hitachi spun off Western Digital), and Western Digital (Blue drives specifically) as these drives have been the MOST replaced drives due to failures. Seagate's enterprise models and Western Digital's Black and Red drives have fared the best in my experience as I rarely see systems come back when these drives are used to replace the aforementioned models.

Destiny10803945d ago

ps4 doesn't support trim so your ssd will slow down over time, as for the reliability of ssd I wouldn't worry about it they will last longer then your ps4, the 840 evo comes with a 3 year guarantee and the new 850 pro comes with a 10 year guarantee

Danousek3945d ago

I definitely would go for Toshiba.Never Seagate!

KinjoTakemura3945d ago

Seagate has been known to freeze up during OS installs and extended gameplay, probably because of the build up of heat, especially when people have used them with PS3s.

Beastforlifenoob3945d ago

Never, EVER buy seagate. They are renowned for their extremely low reliability. Go with samsung, toshiba or WD.

MRMagoo1233945d ago

The most returned hard drive company in my store so far is WD but then again they are probably the most bought HD too. I am pretty sure seagate makes samsung hdds so telling ppl to avoid seagate and get samsung seems kinda odd right ?

I got a samsung 500GB ssd, games load very fast with this expensive fella

This means they will likely be more open-ended decisions; speed runners may be in for a treat.

Christopher6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I'll believe it when I see it. I also don't feel Bethesda games are stat intensive as it is, though. It seems pretty basic.

jznrpg3h ago

Bleh I want more stats not less. So lame going for casuals

isarai2h ago

Aren't RPGs SUPPOSED to be stat heavy? So are they leaning even more away from being an RPG? Ugh ☹️

Destiny already has the pretty hyper 'raid' fixation and then they added legendary raid dungeons. Hyperfixating in PvEvP wouldn't work as well because you need a lot more than 2% of the userbase to keep that going unlike raids that are propped up by streamers who make running them their whole job. Most players don't play all the raids let alone run them over and over. And most who play PvP don't want structured PvE elements.
