Next-Gen Face-Off: Titanfall

A lot rides on the success of Titanfall. For Respawn Entertainment it is the culmination of four years' hard work - the first project that many of the team has shipped since the release of Modern Warfare 2 in November 2009. For Electronic Arts, it's a chance to redeem something from its lacklustre EA Partners endeavour, while the game represents Microsoft's biggest hope in regaining momentum and catching up with the PlayStation juggernaut. In our opinion, Titanfall is a stand-out game that must be played - but Xbox One is perhaps not the best platform to play it on.

Got my copy yesterday, but with no X1 until next week, i had to play it at a friends house....and the framerate/screen is definitely a problem for me. Anyone who says it runs at a smooth 60fps is either oblivious to framerate droops or is plain lying. When there is a big battle going on with multiple titans it stutters a ton, just like it shows in the video, dips to 25.6.

I hope Respawn manage to smooth out the kinks in the upcoming patch. I know it's their main priority right now.

Apart from that, it's great. Had a lot of fun.

Sammy7773695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

Just brutal

"Well, we put some time into this and didn't spot any single-digit frame-rates, but this is clearly a great way to stress-test the game, and we can well imagine that if all 12 Titans were let loose in a confined space, frame-rates could plummet to a noticeably unacceptable level."

GarrusVakarian3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

Like you said below, i don't know why this "bad" looking game (it actually looks pretty good on certain amps) is having any problems running at locked or very near locked 60fps. I could understand slight dips below 60fps when multiple titans are on the screen or when things get really hectic, but dips below 30fps at the times when you need 60fps the most, are unacceptable.

It's still tons of fun, but Respawn said "framerate is king"....when it clearly isn't. And for me, it directly affects gameplay. Twitch responses are crucial for this sort of game.

"the Xbox One version simply cannot sustain the required 60fps. The consistency in performance just isn't there and so the gameplay often doesn't feel quite right"

"..obvious tearing that impacts visual consistency"

"So, just like the beta, we see Titanfall frame-rates on Xbox One dip into the mid-30s at its worst, and at those points the rock-solid consistency we saw in the early iterations of the Modern Warfare experience is gone, and with it - arguably - the essence of the "twitch" shooter"

It's ridiculous that Microsofts biggest game of the year is plagued by performance issues. How long until people get tired of it? I say its unacceptable. The game obviously needed a few more months in the oven.

Gazondaily3695d ago

You lot are chatting as if its unplayable. It is NO WHERE near as bad as you guys are making it out honestly. I played the whole.campaign and didn't clock any real slowdown that made the game unplayable.

It's fine. Honestly. Yeah the frame rate problems most likely exist but it is no where game breaking.

kenshiro1003694d ago

Um Septic, this is supposed to be NEXT GEN game. This doesn't scream next gen.

antz11043694d ago

Please Septic, don't post comments if you're not complaining!

UNACCEPTABLE!!!

s8anicslayer3694d ago

Next Gen is not Perfection, but it is an improvement over last Gen. People expecting flawless performance will spend thousands on top notch PC gear and won't think twice about it! Yes titanfall does dip in framer ate in intense titan battles but it is still playable and does not effect the game play experience.

Bennibop3695d ago

Have bought this for x1 and there are some frame rate issues when there is a lot of action plus it is not the best looking game in the world!

GearSkiN3695d ago

This game clearly not goin for graphics the art style of it is what they go for.

Flutterby3695d ago

It's clearly not going for frames per second either

devwan3695d ago

@GearSkiN If they weren't "going for graphics" why the weird 792P resolution instead of the much more straightforward to scale 720P to allow for better performance?

They were supposed to be going for performance: "frame-rate is king", yet they pushed the graphics further than they needed to and it suffers in terms of frame-rate.

I'd like to know who made these decisions and why given the slowdowns and tearing.

3695d ago
Concertoine3694d ago

@deyvan
Because people bitched and whined when they found out it was 720p. I think respawn shouldve stoof their ground on that one, tbh. Most of the people complaining had no interest in the game or the xbone in the first place.

for console warriors :

"So, just like the beta, we see Titanfall frame-rates on Xbox One dip into the mid-30s at its worst, and at those points the rock-solid consistency we saw in the early iterations of the Modern Warfare experience is gone, and with it - arguably - the essence of the "twitch" shooter."

"the Xbox One version simply cannot sustain the required 60fps. The consistency in performance just isn't there and so the gameplay often doesn't feel quite right. "

My person opinion is that this is happening because of unoptimized coding. A game like Titanfall, which just looks "bad" should have no problem running at 792p,60 fps on Xbone

Pandamobile3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

You realize that the Xbox One is basically a laptop from 2011 shoved into a console form factor, right?

Certain times during a match, my desktop even dips into the 40s if there's 4+ titans in small area, all firing rocket barrages, missiles, smoke screens, nuclear detonations, etc. I don't know how Respawn plans on fixing those Xbox One performance issues without removing chunks of gameplay. It's a lot more resource-hungry than you'd think if you haven't played it.

yewles13695d ago

Laptop? Try tablet for both consoles...

Utalkin2me3695d ago

@yewles1

Well my tablet graphics of Infamous SS, is the best looking game i have played. And i have a i7 and a gtx 780.

Pandamobile3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

You guys keep hyping up Infamous: Second Son as if it's going to be the next big graphical benchmark game lol.

It looks good, I give it that, but games like Crysis 2/3 and Metro: Last Light still edge it out in the graphics department, based on the screenshots I saw today.

Evilsnuggle3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

Pandamobile
No doubt that crysis 3 is the king of graphics. But the The Order 1886 has the best graphics on any platform PC or consoles I have seen. It has better graphics that crysis 3 now the caveat crysis 3 on pc has higher frame-rates and it's a open world game. Open world game take more GPU power and resources to run than Small area linear games . But The Order 1886 gameplay is CGI quality. I think that The Order 1886 when released will be the new king of graphics. The crysis 3 engine is a Beast it the best current Game engine hands down it still looks better than in unreal 4 demos I have seen.

This thing with 60fps on consoles and pc is stupid. All platforms have frame rate dips console And pc. You would need to lock the frame rate and that takes the game running way above 60fps like 75 -85fps.

BitbyDeath3694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

@Panda, inFamous looks better than Crysis 3 because C3 has loads of jaggies. inFamous has a much cleaner image.

C3 also has nothing like the particle effects you see in inFamous SS.

inFamous SS is the new graphics benchmark.

Pandamobile3694d ago

Lol, you realize that Crysis 3 on PC features several types of anti-aliasing, right?

BitbyDeath3694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

Yes but clearly not on the level of inFamous.

http://gamer.blorge.com/wp-...

Find me an image of Crysis that has the draw distance as good as this -

Or even just an ingame image (with gun) that looks as good as this -

or this

Crysis 3 has been surpassed and not just by a little.

How can you not see how much better this game is looking?

Pandamobile3694d ago (Edited 3694d ago )

Foliage is extremely difficult to render. We could get into a technical breakdown of all the things that Crysis 3 has that Infamous: Second Son does not, but I doubt that you're the proper audience for that.

But since I'm a nice guy, I'll fill you in on some of the details. If DualShockers is to be believed, I:SS uses 2x SMAA. The same SMAA that Crytek pioneered and used in Crysis 3 (and possibly 2, I can't remember). So your argument that I:SS has better anti-aliasing than Crysis 3 does is patently false, as Crysis 3 has a 4x SMAA implementation, as well as FXAA and MSAA (MSAA being the best anti-aliasing technique you can hope to realistically implement in a modern game).

To put this in perspective, Crytek are a technology company. Their bread and butter is making games that showcase the highest level of technical prowess that is possible with today's graphics hardware. I'm sure Sucker Punch have a great design team in their studio and are fully capable of making a good looking game - but if you think that they're going to take the mythical graphic crown from a company like Crytek, you're going to be a very disappointed boy.

BitbyDeath3694d ago

Well having better AA does not automatically make it the best looking game. Art, assets and particle effects are all clearly better in inFamous SS.

Please provide pics and details as to why you believe Crysis to be better looking.

Pandamobile3694d ago

I'm not arguing with you about whether Crysis 3 or Infamous: Second Son has better art direction and visual design, I'm just disproving your initial statement about Infamous being better looking because it has "better" anti-aliasing, when it in fact does not.

LordSane3694d ago

Fanboy says his game has best "something"

PC guy says that it's not actually the best "something"

Fanboy says that this "something" doesn't make a good game anyway.

Ahh, classic.

Man can't imagine how X360 will fair. It makes sense why it's 30fps if mort is to be believed.

I wonder would a drop to 720p make for a more consistent framerate/lower drop?

Pandamobile3695d ago

It likely wouldn't affect much. If I had to guess, I'd say the game is more CPU bound than GPU bound. Decreasing the resolution of the game only works if the GPU isn't starving for resources.

Kayant3695d ago

"say the game is more CPU bound than GPU bound" - Due to the heavy use of physics and the background stuff going on in the skybox? As the AI stuff is offloaded to the servers for rendering.

Pandamobile3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

Not necessarily - I don't imagine the background elements contribute that much to the game's performance.

The AI is offloaded to the servers so that all players receive consistent world states more than reduce local computational time. Having 20-30 AI in a level isn't a hard thing for modern computers/consoles to do.

No, I figure most of Titan Fall's performance issues come from the game being extremely chaotic towards the end of a match. Think about it. In situations where there's 10+ titans strolling about the map, all firing weapons using their core abilities, evasive countermeasures, etc - that's a lot of action happening all at once. On top of that chaos, you also have grunts shooting at titans, titans killing grunts, pilots shooting titans, titans shooting players, etc. Everything has effects associated with it that eat up CPU and GPU time which contributes to performance drops.

Getting Titan Fall to run at a solid 60 FPS on any console would be a huge challenge from a dev's point of view, because you can't do much to fix it besides remove important elements that add up to the overall Titan Fall experience.

Personally, I don't mind when games dip below 60 FPS because I know what it takes to make that happen. If you want a game to run at 60 FPS the ENTIRE time, you're going to have a pretty flat and boring game (unless of course you're running that game on a PC. In which case, you set your own performance goals and can tune the graphics to suit your desired performance level).

Kayant3695d ago

@Pandamobile

Makes sense when you put it like that. Thanks for the in depth explanation.

Very true from the footage i have watched there is always no stop action going on.

Utalkin2me3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

Actually pandamobile is right. The source engine is more CPU intensive then it is GPU intensive.

@Kayant
Non stop action? We haven't played the same game i believe.

GearSkiN3695d ago

360 rumored to be 30fps

Tempest3173695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

@Utalkin2me I play it on pc, action is truly non stop(or damn close). I was on the fence, so I just logged into my brothers Origin account and started playing, Ive put around 12-14 hours in it so far. Every match is near 100% action, especially after the first Titan drop, shit hits the fan. It's one of the fastest fps I have played in a very long time, very enjoyable.

Edit: I will say that im not entirely sure how x1 players handle it with a controller...the twitch response and accuracy necessary to actually hit a moving target after moving at full speed wallrun is crazy. I can imagine x1 gameplay being considerably slower.

This definitely goes against what I've heard so many swear against while playing TitanFall! It begs to ask the question of who to believe! Hmm....

The flagship titles of the Xbox1 version of TitanFall seems to not be as great as the majority of people are claiming it to be! Which also raises the question of what are these same people motivations or agendas!? All these high scores, yet the absence of or mention of these issues in the majority of their reviews!? It's quite puzzling to say the least.

Then there's Respawn at the backend saying these issues will be resolved, when in truth they shouldn't have been present to begin with, going by their own words! The Xbox1 power is really called into question above all else, becauese it pretty much nagates the majority of their claims both hardware and software focused alike.

All last gen sites like this were major focal point in the so called "Console Wars", let's see if that same focal point remains intact this gen! Or will it be conveniently dismissed due to tables being turned!?

One thing is for sure, it should make for some interesting entertainment.

Boody-Bandit3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

" It begs to ask the question of who to believe!"

What's there to believe? TitanFall dips below 30fps and has video tearing, period. I TF for the X1 and have logged about 8 hrs into it. It's no different than the beta was as far as frame rates and video tearing. It's definitely a fun game but the performance issues do take away from the overall enjoyment of the game a bit. At least it does for me.

I personally don't think TF will be a long lived experience. At least for me personally. Unless of course Respawn can find a way to make the game more stable overall.

But to be totally honest. I do have some friends that are not bothered the least by the performance issues. Some people just don't care. I think it effects more the hardcore gamer than mainstream and casual shooter fans.

I can notice the slightest tear and frame drop. I wish it wasn't so but I can / do.

stuna13695d ago

Truthfully I was being sarcastic, but I say that because through all the hype this game has received from day one, the majority of people have lost all objectively concerning it! The things that so many took blood oaths to stand by all last gen, are no longer their stances with this game! Thing considered game breaking, no issues.

I'm not saying TitanFall is a bad game! I'm saying it's not what people swore on their mothers it to be! So I actually agree with you.

Boody-Bandit3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

I knew you were being sarcastic and I agreed with you as well.

I am just being per my name sake and keeping it real.

TitanFall, like most big budget games, is over rated all things considered. If it was a more complete (more modes and content) and polished game I wouldn't say that but it isn't. There is no integrity left in gaming journalism and this game was driven by a huge PR and marketing campaign.

I am having fun with the game but it's not like one of those game I want to play every minute I can spare. That's why I rented it from GF with the option to keep. I'm not sure I'm going to keep it yet. Domination is the only mode I like so far. Definitely not a fan of Attrition (noob bot farming).

Tempest3173695d ago

@Brutallyhonest The biggest problem I have with the game is the lack of single player. I LOVE the movement in game...some matches all I do is see how long I can stay off the ground lol...I really just want to be able to do that in single player, where I can take my time and do things my way without worrying about other people slaughtering me while Im just trying to have fun.

RIP_Cell3695d ago (Edited 3695d ago )

so a great game with some "performance issues", like the article said it's a "stand-out game that must be played" . don't bash it because you can't play it

HeWhoWalks3695d ago

Who exactly is bashing it because they can't play it? This is a useful read with key info. Who cares what another person thinks, though? If you enjoy it, play it. Just don't expect everyone's opinion to mirror yours (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with people who have no interest in it, so long as they are reasonable about it).

Thus far, I've not seen an abundance of hate towards the game in here.

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad875d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal874d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
