The insane textures don't look all that great, not sure why 3gb of vram is required for it. Hope a DF article can expand on the tech they used.

There's just many textures used. It actually has a diverse amount of textures. Nearly every wall is different as opposed to many games that have the same assets throughout the level. That's the main reason. 3gb is not needed it just helps. Don't forget, optimization on PC os very different from console. A game can not look fantastic but can be demanding due to design choices.

Where are you getting 3GB of VRAM usage from??!! In Gamersnexus benchmarks they used Max Settings with Insane textures with a 1.5GB GTX 580!

The in game option to set textures to insane states at least 3gb of vram required. Here's an excerpt from the DF article:
