Titanfall: Respawn Denies Rumors on Resolution Drop to 720p on Xbox One

About an hour ago “insider” Crazy Buttocks on a Train (AKA CBOAT) dropped a rumor, stating that Titanfall’s resolution would be dropped at launch from 792p of the beta to 720p, also saying that he’s “sticking to his guns about texture resolution at launch being the same of the alpha.

DualShockers reached out to Respawn for a clarification, and Community Manager Abbie Heppe firmly denied the rumor.

It's curious to see people react to this. Maybe the final build will have worse textures. Maybe it'll be the same or better..

The thing is, we've already had multiple games on X1 that fell short of the pre-release footage and screenshots. Dead Rising 3 had juttery framerate and pop-in. Forza 5 had significant downgrades in the lighting and textures compared to the pre-release demos they were showing off (especially considering the whole "Forza 5 running on PCs, not X1" controversy). Multiplats run significantly worse on X1.

And then there was Resolutiongate regarding CoD Ghosts.

Is it such a stretch that this game might be all that the devs are saying it is, graphically speaking? People argue "but but why would they do that? They wouldn't do that. It would just hurt them in the end".

Would it? Lying about game performance hasn't exactly killed the X1 in the first 3 months since it launched. Why would it kill THE BIGGEST VIDEOGAME OF THE YEAR(tm)!!??!

729p, 720p, alpha textures, beta textures... in all cases the game simply does not look that impressive, and for the bone to be struggling with it is quite indicative of how weak of a system it is. 2D fighters, ports of last gen games, and next gen games that don't look all that great all get downgrades in some form on the bone.

I was in the Alpha and the Beta and the Beta was light years better looking. The textures in the Alpha looked like they were from DOOM. When I booted up the Beta I was immediately struck by how much better the guns and everything looked.

Well, when you comparing PC insane settings @1080p vs. Xbone version, Titanfall on Xbone looks like alpha or like crap. I'm pretty sure that CBOAT has right. I don't see such big improvements in textures on Xbone. Minor improvements probably.

According to Digital Foundry, Titanfall beta on Xbone has framedrops from 60 to 35 fps. If CBOAT has right, possible scenarios :

- Framerate remain the same from 35 to 60
- Resolution donwgrade from 792p to 720p, framerate jump to 45-60 fps
- 2xMSAA goes out and FXAA goes in, framerate jump to 50-60 fps
- Texture downgrades ( well, i can't see downgrades because textures are bad enough on Xbone )

i got a pc a ps4 a ps3 and a 360..half of my platforms can plat titanfall and the pc version would be the best tf released. but after an hour i was truly bored with it. i was seeing the lack of polish the lack of details that even oo7 pulled off like bullet damage and better ai.

look i've said this before tf is a very fun game and will be great forpc/360/x1 owners but it is in no way "revolutionary" nor is it better than the fps games we have today...jetpacks? shadowrun on 360 had them...mechs...well ps4 has them had the since launch with blacklight a free game. so the overblown hype is just annoying i guess...absolutely nothing we havent seen in a fps online mp game...now if that were actually fighing the monsters that are in the background then we would be talking.

That would be great, Ryse and Bf4 (on PS4) look pretty nice at 900p, they must be using some really good AA.

But i just hope they can get that framerate locked down to 60fps...or very near to it. I think we should be hoping for that, over a bump in res. If they can't maintain a locked 60fps at 792p, then increasing the res to 900p (which would need around 33% more power) seems a little risky to me. Unless they have some godly optimization skills, then i don't see 900p @ locked 60fps happening.

The main reason all this doom and gloom exists is nowadays is because the platforms are ridiculously similar to each other. This is great from the publishers point of view as they can release on multiple platforms now and more people can play the game, but having more than one console is a bit redundant now given that both consoles get practically every third party game.

It was more fun when you could compare DIFFERENT games on different consoles rather than the SAME game on different consoles.

I know this is conspiracy theory crazy but I had a thought.

The CBOAT reputation has been ruined by many believing that he is really an umbrella account for several people at NeoGaf used to spread FUD with the odd rumor that is so vague and easy to guess that it had some credibility. Now that many feel the account has been exposed as a ruse I wonder if they aren't killing the account and setting up FamousMortimer as the next guy to have all the credibility.

He did immediately jump all over this as soon as it was out stating he did not believe most of it and that his sources denied CBOATS claim. Maybe he is just taking advantage to build credibility for himself.

It was also very fishy that CBOAT decided to spread this FUD on a UK thread that was getting hype for the TitanFall/Xbox One bundle and the price drop. Coincidence or damage control?

that said, FamousMortimer (Pete Dodd) actually to me seems to be pretty legit. He has his preferences but I don't find him to be a Sony Schill at all. This is coming from a guy who has an Xbox One and enjoys it.

I do think the CBOAT account could be just an access account for multiple users. And its use, timing and types of rumor leaks has become increasingly anti MS which is odd given how it started out being much more even handed.

Also, if you look at the leaks of CBOAT and other GAF people then look at the sites on here that are constantly reporting on them like they are first on the scene (cough***Dualshockers***cough) you start to see a pattern of big NeoGaf Rumors turning instantly into Articles pushed on to N4G. Either they only find news on GAF or maybe (putting on my tinfoil hat) they are creating this "news".

To be honest, if you look at the CBOAT predictions outside of the crazy writing code often they feel like they are indeed written by different people. I wouldn't be shocked if CBOAT really was just an account that multiple "leakers" accessed. For the longest time his leaks seemed to have an even handed approach but the last year or so it seems most if not all felt much more targeted and timed to try and disrupt MS.

The problem with Thuway, Cboat and Pete Dowd they've got the big stuff wrong and the small stuff right.

Resolution gate was obvious if you looked at the specifications of both consoles before launch. Microsoft wasn't ready for next gen like Sony was. Sony announced earlier than expected. Microsoft software tools for developers wasn't ready and its only getting to them now.

Pete Dowd before launch. x box live was broken, party chat and the snap features were broken. Proven not right.

Who knows what is right or not regarding the game. Cboat has been both right and wrong. Anyone that dismisses what he says, is a fool. Anyone who banks on what he says, is also a fool.

What we know is, if it remains 792p and the game still dips into the 30's, and some have said into even the 20's when multiple mechs are around, then they should have made some changes like CBoat 'leaked'.

Sure some improvements can be made, but to go from 25 or 35-60 FPS at 792p to 900p/60 in a couple of weeks is also a far fetched claim.

Right now I don't know who to believe, because both sides sound pretty ludicrous.

But we'll see. One thing is for sure, if they release it as people have complained about the beta framerate on XB1, it will be noticed and digital foundry and others will write many articles about it.

Afterall this is a source game, modified yes, just like Ureal 3 engine was modified from hell to back in a million games...the games still all had the same Ureal 3 engine flavor to it.

Just like this game looks like a source game. Except it's 2014 not 2004, and the source engine is really dated.

The PC had a higher OPTION of textures, so even the XB1 will be using lesser textures then what is possible on PC. XB1 is not using INSANE textures like the PC version.

So 792p/regular PC textures and 25 or 35-60 FPS would definitely be noticed and would look pretty bad for the XB1 given how old the Source engine is.

When you announce information of a games shortcomings so early, the devs know exactly what to concentrate on fixing, if the game has shortcomings elsewhere after release because they've had to fix that specific thing, everybody will be too busy concentrating on the leak to notice.
& when the res/texture's all fine and dandy, but other parts of the game took a hit to fix it, people will only see the fixed part, rather than the broken parts.
