Titanfall is a perfect example of why graphics don’t always matter

Titanfall isn't an amazing looking game but it doesn't matter, because just like a lot of video games, Titanfall's gameplay is key to what makes it so fun.

When it comes to this game, it's all about gameplay and not graphics.

iamnsuperman4139d ago (Edited 4139d ago )

Sure, gameplay is vital for a game to work (ultimately the first thing to get right) but you don't want to spend 60 bucks on something that looks like arse (just a note I am not saying Titanfall does. It was just a more general comment about games in general). Visually appealing is important (if that is realism or a nice art direction). I was hoping with this new generation we could move away from the grey/brown look which plagued the last generation

Gazondaily4139d ago

To be honest, the visuals are no where near what I would consider next-gen. In fact, they would be decidedly average by last-gen standards imo (apart from maybe some of the crazy stuff happening in the sky line).

But yeah, Titanfall has that addictive quality. It won those awards at E3 not because it looked next-gen but because the gameplay looked like fun and the next step-up from the COD formula that people expected but instead were lumbered with recycled annual affairs.

I love the gameplay. There is always so much going on. Look at this gameplay video and this is the kind of thing you can expect to happen in almost every game:

Eonjay4139d ago

There is this falsehood spreading that says that you can't have both. This is incorrect. Given the right time, engine and power, you CAN have good graphics and gameplay. Would Titanfall be rejected it it had good graphics and destructibility. I hope not. You can have both.

WildArmed4139d ago

Actually, I'm pretty fine with that.

Content and game play have always been the most important to me. I play RPGs alot, so visuals vary from amazing to psx-era. I am fine with that, the only thing I really care about is having stability. The game needs to run at a good stable FPS and not crash.

Anthotis4139d ago

It's also a perfect example of why having more than 12 players is important.

georgeenoob4139d ago (Edited 4139d ago )

Bu bu Titanfall looks like 360 game! *rolls eyes*

Respawn are the veterans and most talented of the multiplayer experience. Look at CoD4, that game changed multiplayer forever. Was CoD4 known for graphics? No. Gameplay is THE top priority.

Respawn will deliver yet again in revolutionizing multiplayer, too bad a good number of gamers won't experience it.

Boody-Bandit4139d ago (Edited 4139d ago )

Gameplay should always be priority one but graphics matter a lot to me as well. You can have and should be able have the best of both worlds. Especially on brand new hardware. The fact we are even discussing this I find to be a little disturbing and makes me wonder about the future of the X1.

Titanfall not only isn't a graphical juggernaut but it's barely running over 720p, meh textures, no single player campaign and only 6v6 online. That doesn't exactly add up to a very taxing game.

I am really interested to see how this game differs on the PC. A recent article posted here said it has crazy textures on the PC and you can run it at a lot higher resolutions as well. So maybe that version will be the best of both worlds.

@georgenoob

Quake, Unreal Tournament, Counterstrike and the original Battlefield changed multiplayer forever. Not COD4. You really need to have a tad more experience in gaming. IMO the best experience I ever had online was CS and I've played them all. Just my opinion of course.

Eonjay4139d ago

@georgenood

Yeah its a shame that this game wont reach its potential by skipping systems, but the lack of good graphics isn't exactly a badge of honor.

Anyway I think in the end it will work out for Respawn, because it helps them to build an audience on the Xbox One; because in reality most people probably would have gotten it on PS4 anyway. Now maybe they can help sell some Xbox Ones. When Titanfall 2 comes out, they will be an actual market on Xbox to sell it to in addition to the larger PS4 base.

Bigpappy4139d ago

@Eonjay: you are forgetting that the game will be on Xbox 360 and also. Your comments seem a bit fixated on X1 vs PS4. We all know PS4 is selling faster, but that does not tell which user base would buy more of any game.

BattleAxe4139d ago

I don't really think the graphics are bad at all. You would think that people are talking about a PS2 game the way the graphics are being judged.

UltimateMaster4139d ago

I can tell you a bunch of other games that game play is just better than graphics.

So basically, this means 'buy the Xbox 360 version'.

Rocky54139d ago

I guess it must just be me, but I like the graphics & they don't look last gen, there are high res textures & the models are detailed, I guess peeps are looking for CG graphics & anything less is classed as crap.

Also the gameplay is awesome so much fun & the wall running & stuff is well fun.

Ipunchbabiesforfun4139d ago

Um, CoD4 when it came out was cutting edge. I remember game informer and everyone else hyping the graphics so high. It came out in year 1-2 of xbox 360 and it set the standard. Go look it up, I know I'm right because I still have the issue talking about how awesome the lighting and everything was. Chernobyl was mind blowing for 2006-2007.

Sarcasm4139d ago

I'm with Eonjay. Is it really a crime to ask for BOTH? An amazing super high quality game should have everything, which means great gameplay, sound, netcode, and graphics.

pompombrum4139d ago

Gameplay is obviously the main priority but graphics should still be a secondary concern. I was impressed with the PC graphics seeing how it's running on source but still, another concern has to be how on Earth they can't get it running at a higher resolution on the Xbox One.. the game doesn't look that graphically demanding at all.

awi59514138d ago

Perfect example the portal games they dont look the best but was voted game of the year by alot of people anyway.

BallsEye4138d ago (Edited 4138d ago )

By looking at the screens on the net I thought it will be awful aliasing fest with crap graphics. I was never so wrong! Launched it yesterday and somehow there are no jaggies! It's very sharp and crisp, more than bf4. Particle effects are very pretty. Call me crazy but I actually liked it more than console version of bf4 at times. It's just very clean , simple, sharp and easy for the eye. And yes I do have a perfect TV settings with high sharpness. Maybe it's that recent xbox one update that makes it so smooth? I have no idea but you guys shouldn't believe these crappy screens on dualshockers. It looks NOTHING like it. Oh did I say the game is Fkin AMAZING?? And yes I hate COD.

Tell it to the PC gamers.

Also, wasn't this argument the common knee jerk response when defending Wii games back in the day?

Aura20014139d ago

And that argument pretty much still stands. Even on PC Titanfall really doesn't look that good.

Dynasty20214139d ago

Exactly.

Us PC crowd are getting an even higher graphics setting. "Insane" or something.

The game won't look much better as it already looks shit.

Graphics settings can't take away the last-gen features in this last-attempt from MS.

JustPlay44139d ago (Edited 4139d ago )

Isn't this why people hate COD, not everyone hate the way it plays just it graphics because of old engine I know gameplay has been the same for wail but this seem kinda dumb when other people bash games for this very reason
Yes I'm a cod fanboy, I'm also buying titanfall for PC because im cod fan

Clunkyd4139d ago

True, But why not have both Graphics and Gameplay?

hellzsupernova4139d ago

All games should be gameplay over graphics!

frostypants4139d ago

Sssoooo...just buy it for the 360?

Rimeskeem4139d ago

Yes that seems to be very self explanatory

andrewsqual4139d ago (Edited 4139d ago )

I know what the article is saying. Half Life 2 is on the exact same game engine and is the greatest game that was ever made. Titanfall is not and will never be in the top 500 though.
That said this game needs to come under other scrutiny that this articles fails to mention. We ALL know that gameplay is important about a game. But at least when a game like Warhawk, that was online-only in August 2007, and released on PSN it was only €29.99. What gives them a free pass to charge full retail for this? Oh because the gameplay is the most perfect thing in the world? Warhawk was the best game out there online back in the day with 32 players having it out on foot, vehicle or by air and looked great too and for a fair price.
People are talking about Titanfall like it isn't just a fps game where you point your gun and shoot.

misterbe34138d ago

BF2 back in the day on PC was multi player only, and they charged full price for it.

SuicideKing4138d ago

I am loving this game, the beta is a blast gameplay is so smooth!

kraenk124138d ago

while this is true the PC version looks considerably better...so why don't have both?!

medman4138d ago

You know who says graphics don't matter? Gamers whose system can't display high res graphics, that's who. This just in....a games look matters.

NeoTribe4138d ago

Not sure why we cant have both.... why make next gen games look like old gen games and say "its not about graphics". Why exactly do we invest in ne t gen machinery if were gonna let devs get away with this bs. Imagine this game with bf4 graphics.

Wingsfan244139d ago

The graphics are pretty good imo. There's a lot of little effects going on, and the Titan animations are really great to look at from the ground. Sound design is great too, everything booms, having a lot of fun with the beta right now aside from wanting the player count to be risen for human players.

SlavisH24139d ago

I think so too. I think its mostly trolls. I was thinking this game sucked and looked like crap. I got to play it today and its great and graphic are good.

Wingsfan244139d ago

I wouldn't say "trolls" really, just differing opinions. It's not as good looking as Battlefield 4 per say, but there's other games coming out soon that will show off graphics. Titanfall is fun and that's what matters to me.

pat_11_54139d ago

Yea, they certainly aren't bad, that's for sure. I just wish they had that next-gen sheen to them (I don't feel like the visuals do at all).

LexHazard794139d ago

I haven't play it nor do I own an Xbox One but the videos I watch on youtube the game looks pretty good. Also, arent the graphics getting a lil bump for final build or is this it. Also I want to hear from someone thats actually playing it on Xbox One and give me honest opinion! Is the game fun also how doew framerates hold up? Thanks!

hello124139d ago (Edited 4139d ago )

No frame rate drops on x box 1 unless someone jumps in with a crazy bad internet connection. They should block people from different countries jumping into servers they are not close to.

The graphics are not what you call next gen. But the gameplay and maps and titans work well, my only issue so far is the bots. You often end up with more kills against bots than people.

Galletto34139d ago

Its very fun so far. Framerate is steady even with the pure chaos from every side

PhantomT14124139d ago

Yeah graphics are pretty good. I had to turn all the settings to low (besides the resolution) because it wasn't running smoothly but I was too lazy to figure out the optimal parameters, and the game still looked good.

Tedakin4139d ago

I've started to get really irritated when every time a game comes out the first thing people do is count the lines of resolution, and that number dictates to them whether the game not only looks good, but is good overall. If there's that much of a difference in appearance, why do you even need to count? Can't you just look and see how apparently bad it looks? Nope. Titanfall is sharp and crisp as hell. Is it a Killzone caliber game in appearance, nah, but it's still beautiful in its own right and the most fun I've had with any game in a long time.

WildArmed4139d ago

More importantly, TitanFall has an art style.

I am so glad to see more shooters with an art style than the generic realistic look.

Games need art style, not high res textures.

Some games will look bland at 4k as well, because they don't have artistic direction. While other will look great at 720p.

yezz4138d ago

You're right that aesthetics are more important. But Titanfall still looks bland to me. I wouldn't say that it looks bad but looking at Shadow fall or BF4 I'm expecting better from a next gen title, considering that the maps are not huge and don't have destructive environment.

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

MadLad1011d ago

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g1010d ago (Edited 1010d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

I played them all, they are all good in their own way

An ode to Titanfall: The last twitch shooter I'll probably ever enjoy

Windows Central: "Titanfall 1 is being sunset, taken off storefronts by EA. While the servers remain live for now, one has to wonder just how much time it has left. I look back and pay tribute to the last "twitch"-styled shooter I ever truly loved."
