64's a crowd? Why you shouldn't worry about Titanfall's 12 player cap

OXM - OK, I can see where all this is coming from. Respawn has never outright described Titanfall as a big team shooter, but that's a fair deduction to make of the developer's E3 and Gamescom demonstrations, rife as they are with cloud-powered AI grunts that are easily confused with players at a glance. Moreover, the maps are pretty roomy - they're built to accommodate robots the size of buildings - and the premise is that you're fighting a full-blown interplanetary war, vividly communicated by the sight of enormous starfleets in the announcement video.

I'm starting to think 2014 may be the year of small-scale multiplayer. Evolve, Destiny (yes, I'm aware it has trad PvP), The Division (delayed?) and others are trying to make more intimate kinds of multiplayer experience rather than just throwing numbers at the wall.

Kingthrash3603914d ago

official xbox magazine article. nuff said.
so of corse they gunna downplay this. 6v6...man the game is too awsome for just 6v6. med sized maps with 12v12 is perfect for this game. it dont need 64 players but man 12 is a very shallow number.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3914d ago

First off, you have not played the game, nor have you seen the map sizes except a glimpse of the ONLY gameplay footage that is out which I only saw 4 titans the whole video (I think) and it still looked fast paced! so it is too early to knock this

Irishguy953914d ago

'Too awesome' for 6 v 6? Hmm, are games with 6 v6 or below not awesome? For Halo, 6 v 6 or 4 v 4 was the sweet spot, unless you were playing a vehicle gametype. Even then I preferred the smaller ones.

I'm just surprised is all, I really hope the Ai aren't literally just bots that are their instead of players, because if they are there is no reason to have them there instead of players. Although I suppose, star wars battlefront and BF2 played like that too and that game was amazing.

360ICE3914d ago

I feel like the developers know this better than anyone. The fact that they did scale it down to 6v6 because of balance instead of going with huge scale gimmicky battles like everyone wants makes me think this game might not be such a lame, unoriginal game after all.

Kingthrash3603914d ago

man yall can overreact.
look, titanfall will be a great game and it will sell well and have sequels and succeed. no one's denying that...
that said 6v6 just doesn't cut it...period. its essentially a 24 player game when u add bots...but this is a new generation peoples saying 4v4 was halo's sweet spot..yeah what 2 generations ago?
gtfo take them bots out and use the "cloud" power and 300,000+ servers and have 24 humans...denial hit hard...somebody tell me why bots are better than humans. are bots better? or are humans better? no bots on cod, bf, halo or kz...well kz has them but NOBODY uses them on kz. why because bots arent humans
man so much denial

Gazondaily3914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

The people who played this game know why 12 players is a complete non issue. Others will just speculate and wont listen to Respawn or anyone else.

More than 12 players were possible....it was done solely for gameplay concerns. Why do some kids struggle to understand that?

JaredH3914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

How do you know what's perfect for the game when you've only seen gameplay videos and read about it? Did you play it? I haven't seen anyone complaining about the player limit from those who's played it.

This whole "controversy", and other recent ones, seriously make me sad for the state of the gaming community. Instead of being informed about games people just jump to conclusions on numbers, if it's not "next-gen" enough for them, they crucify it. Games are about fun and the experience, they're only made with numbers.

You do know oxm isn't owned by MS right? It's just a magazine pertaining news about xbox

anyway you look at it 6 vs 6 is a very small scaled multiplayer experience, I play Killzone for the Vita and thats capped at 6 vs 6 aswell. Let me tell you its fun for what it is, a portable handheld game on the go. However Titanfall is supposed to be a full fledged online multiplayer experience, with a messily 12 players it means the maps will be small and the action wont be as frantic, even if you have 0 spawn time. Im sorry but its a huge turn off for me, I was somewhat interested in the game but now..... I dont know

ambientFLIER3914d ago

There are going to be more than 12 players in a game….some of them will simply be bots and titans.

Denton563914d ago

Honestly based on many of the comments I'm reading, I'm suddenly happy I'll be playing Titanfall with fewer people.

Gamer19823913d ago

While I think 64 is too much I do think at least on PC gamers should have had the option at least of more players. It's obvious to get this game on Xbox 360 and Xbox One the games been held back. I hate it when devs hold back there games for parity. Let a system show its strengths please! We pay extra on PC for the extra power. We get a console for ease of use. So let us use our systems correctly and stop tying our hands behind our back and making excuses to cover your ass.

oxm to the rescue:

"The Grunts aren't supposed to be a substitute for human beings: they're cannon fodder that can be farmed for easy XP, which helps ease greener players into the game."

Whatever happened to playing people better than you to get better? and also what happened to games with difficulty, skill, and a learning curve? I dont want games to hold my hand. Also at the end of the article they couldn't forget to damage control these parts of the game

"It also doesn't need to be 1080p. How's that for a segue? Oh, and here's a chat with Respawn about why there's no single player mode."

dirigiblebill3914d ago

"Whatever happened to playing people better than you to get better? and also what happened to games with difficulty, skill, and a learning curve?"

Titanfall offers all those things. I'm confused.

Kingthrash3603914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

bots...BOTS though..smh take the bots out...humans and the unpredictable way humans play are the meat of mp fps. bots can be too perfect or too imperfect and will be exploited for sure. green players gettin more kills from easy bots, smh backward.
that damages the learning curve and difficulty.
human reaction times and unpredictability can't be copied or imitated by ai. whats next micro-transactions? let's hope you dont have to pay for guns and accessories and xp, green noobs with money are dangerous.

UnHoly_One3914d ago

They aren't "bots" in the traditional sense. They are AI, yes, but they are meant to fill specific roles, not replace players.

GamersHeaven3914d ago

Denial with this one is strong.

JackISbacK3914d ago

you still cling to this shit, respawn haven't confirmed the resolution till the STFU,go play on your ps4 ,its agreat device i'am having it too and stop trolling ,stop your fanboy like comments. have fun man play games for what to play companies.

ichdich3914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

So, 6v6 with a huge robot each we get after our personal timers reach zero. You can decrease this timer with damage to titans, kills and objectives. You can have more than one in a single spawn (Call in another after your first is destroyed). The AI are soldiers. Grunts. Players are the highly skilled, highly valued pilots, scooting through the air high above. The AI soldiers move from spawn to objective (For the most part) allowing players to follow them there, or they'll follow a friendly pilot as they ride their titan to VICTORY!

Apparently the smaller robots can come in to help hold objectives once captured. Might help stop the boredom of reaching an objective behind enemy lines and sitting there quietly until it captures.

dont worry, the game will be epic for sure. and non-stop action.

lets_go_gunners3914d ago

How can the game not be 1080p it's source engine. My crappy radeon can do 1080p and it's not half the card the xbox has.

lets_go_gunners3914d ago

No one knows but if it was they would be bragging right?

Although the late 2000s Turok wasn't my favorite, I would love a new entry. Open world survival with shotguns and dinosaurs. Not sure how we'd get the fusion cannon, but that would be pretty sweet too.

MadLad747d ago

Lol

All of these games are pretty much universally praised. Outside of Timeshift I literally own all of these.

Venoxn4g747d ago (Edited 747d ago )

XIII, The Darkness 2, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Timesplitters: future perfect, Bulletstorm are awesome games

I played them all, they are all good in their own way
I used to be obsessed with FPS games

An ode to Titanfall: The last twitch shooter I'll probably ever enjoy

Windows Central: "Titanfall 1 is being sunset, taken off storefronts by EA. While the servers remain live for now, one has to wonder just how much time it has left. I look back and pay tribute to the last "twitch"-styled shooter I ever truly loved."

Physical media. Unfortunately the way games are going these days game servers will eventually be shut down and you can stare at the menu and wish you could play the game again.

littletad1028d ago

This is why reading is so important. Nothing to do with digital or physical media. The game, which is online only, is being delisted because of DDOS and other hacker attacks. The case got so bad that only six players in the world log on. For PC. Rather than fix it, they continued to sell the game, broken as it is, and only now just decided to call it quits. But please, go on thinking what you will.

Ethereal1026d ago

I'm aware of the DDOS attacks and that this case is not typical. This game would eventually have it's servers shutdown regardless of the current situation so that is a moot point. My comment was in a general sense and that there are instances in which games can be preserved physically when official support ends.

Let's recap your first sentence. I said, "the way GAMES are going these days" indicating a broader stroke than just this game. I agree, reading IS important. I was simply stating the obvious downsides of the digital marketplaces and online only trends in games these days. I could even make the argument that the online only offering which has allowed hacker manipulation has impacted the preservation of this great game. My comment is valid in the general sense and thank you for your permission to continue to think what I will.
