Halo Is Our "Most Important IP", Says Microsoft - TV Show Won't Be "Filler"

The forthcoming Halo TV series from Microsoft's Los Angeles production studio isn't just a cynical knock-off, Studios boss Phil Spencer has promised - it'll be a meaningful contribution to a franchise that still has tonnes of potential, over a decade on from Halo: Combat Evolved

dirigiblebill3914d ago

I wonder if it'll form part of Halo Xbox One, like the live action bits in Quantum Break. Seems like Microsoft has a bit of a theme to pursue, there.

deepio3914d ago

I get the feeling the TV show won't tie into the next Halo game, in the same way as Quantum Break, but it could be a prelude to the game - that would certainly get the hype train going.

I'm interested to see what they come up with. I though Forward Unto Dawn was pretty cool.

kreate3914d ago

That halo movie that's on Netflix is pretty good.

Hopefully it improves on that and come out with a full blown TV series.

dirigiblebill3914d ago

Because nothing says "objective commentary" like a massive assertion on the strength of completely no evidence. Let's wait till they release a trailer, hey?

Gazondaily3914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

Nonsense. The Halo-lore is so deep its crying out for a proper movie tie-in.

In fact, part of the problem with Halo 4's campaign was that it made very little sense to the people who didn't read the brilliant books by Greg Bear, which set out the back story for the game. It really will take more than the game to really do the amazing story justice which spans a 1 billion year timeline.

This could finally solve that problem and finally do the Halo back story justice. It's so good that my mate, who, before Halo 4, hadn't even played a Halo game, was completely hooked on the books (Cryptum and Silentium iirc).

nategrigs3914d ago

I didn't play halo 4, but I've heard that the problem was with the multiplayer, the campaign was supposed to be pretty good.

What % of halo players care about the lore I wonder?

Gazondaily3914d ago

@nategrigs

The campaign was good but for people who didn't read the books, they would be missing out on a lot of the meanings in the story.

The MP was good but strayed a little too far into COD territory.

"What % of halo players care about the lore I wonder?"

I would say, quite a few.

KingDadXVI3914d ago

You are bang on there. I love science fiction and Greg Bear was one of the first Hard SF authors that I read. I have all of his books so I had to pick up his Halo trilogy and it was good. Not as good as some of his Hard Core SF but he did a great job at connecting the dots with Humanity (Reclaimers), the Forerunners, the Flood, the Precursors, and 343 Guilty Spark (who is actually the human Chakas downloaded into Guilty Spark).

It really helped the campaign make sense and it would have benefited the franchise to have had a TV miniseries or something to explain this before the game came out or bundled with it.

I personally thought the campaign was really good considering Bungie wasn't onboard anymore. The online was no where as good as Halo 2 or 3 though and I quickly lost interest in it. Compared to Halo 2 and 3 online which my son and I got at least 3 years out of.

I say if they can do a bit to connect the stories of each game it will certainly help with generating enthusiasm.

Please unCOD the online multiplayer though.

malokevi3914d ago

Milk away! Halo is awesome.

JackISbacK3914d ago

what do you think about next uncharted ,i hope they are not milking in your eyes

JasonKCK3914d ago

Amazing how some people say "milking" while ignoring their own cows.

Can't play mp a lick, but love sp and everything video based about the Halo franchise..

Walker3914d ago

I think their most important ip is crackdown ! :P

DanielGearSolid3914d ago

Now that I think about it, without Gears, they dont really have anything else

curtis923914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

Halo and Gears are/were their money makers. We saw how Alan Wake performed (despite being a cool game) and I figure Quantum Break will be similar. They have no Mass effect this time, they have no Gears, they have no Bioshock...etc, etc. Basically most of the reasons so many people got 360s are now irrelevant. Same can be said for Sony though... GTA, MGS, etc. The difference is Sony still has a plethora of studios and what-can-be great games down the pipeline. MS has Titanfall but we know all future titanfall games will be multiplat.

nategrigs3914d ago (Edited 3914d ago )

@curtis

I think that you are overlooking their ability to secure great 3rd party exclusives. You say that they dont have bioshock or mass effect, but titanfall is the exact same thing. Their deep pockets give them the opportunity to buy exclusive rights to 3rd party games that are looking good.....Worked for them last gen

Edit @curtis (again)

You didn't see MS doing much of anything after 2010.

curtis923914d ago

@nategrigs, very true. No denying that. But you really didn't see them doing that after 2010. And also I'm sure it was a lot more affordable last gen with 360 having such an early lead. I figure the cost would be astronomical right now to secure exclusivity after what we've seen with PS4 edging out Xb1 so far. Publishers won't want to give in to exclusivity as easily on the lesser selling console.

Nice! first bloodborne and now this

RaidenBlack16d ago

yep ... hope Fable II, Uncharted Trilogy and Gears Trilogy gets the same treatment

Chocoburger16d ago

Ooh, I always wanted to try Crimson Dragon, this has my interest.

crazyCoconuts16d ago

Isn't this the foundation for your next Xbox?
This is exactly what some of us have been talking about...a way to bridge existing console users into a Xbox branded PC

crazyCoconuts16d ago

I mean.... It would be the end of Xbox.
But at least you'll have a way to play the games you've paid for on new hardware

porkChop15d ago

How is this the foundation for the next Xbox?

Profchaos15d ago

It's been talked about by industry insiders that the next Xbox will not be a Xbox as we know it (traditional closed ecosystem) but more in line with the steamdeck and would allow multiple marketplaces and such as steam to run on it like how the ru has forced iOS to adopt outside marketplaces.

In short think of the nextbox to be more like a steamdeck and less like a xbox

neutralgamer199216d ago

I am just astonished that MS wants to make as much money as Xbox as possible yet so many of their older games aren’t on PC

Goodguy0116d ago

The only halo game I've never played lol. (Asides the wars games)

Software_Lover16d ago

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!

You definitely need to buy Halo MCC.

Elit3Nick16d ago

He said it's the only one he didn't play, so he played all the games that are on MCC

ChasterMies16d ago

Halo 5 is the only Halo game that is not worth playing.

HankHill16d ago

Man, you're on a roll with 💩 opinions.

PhillyDonJawn16d ago

Campaign was trash but the MP is arguably the best in the series. Refreshing combat while staying true to the Halo vibe.

Software_Lover15d ago

Obviously I needed a snicker as I can't read when I'm hungry lol. My apologies.

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub560d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91560d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris559d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer559d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

I mean, the deal is alright… Unfortunately for me the Serious S doesn’t have a disk drive and unfortunately for Gamestop a lot of those games are on or have been on Gamepass/PSNow.

Sgt_Slaughter801d ago

Given the nature of backwards compatibility on new systems, this is a great sale in case you missed out on some gems from last gen.

Mandingo2020801d ago

Most of the games on Xbox are on game pass. The Switch games in this sale are trash c'mon farming simulator that's laughable. The PS4 games should be cheaper. I can't wait for the GameStop going out of business liquidation sale.

neutralgamer1992801d ago

Seriously man I don't get the hate on GS and I guess you want even less options and give more control to the publishers

And you want thousands of people to lose their jobs because you don't like a company. One thing I have noticed is how most who hate on GS haven't shopped at the actual stores in years. Many who hate on GS have also done so listening to others negative stories or experiences. People on YT want clicks and hating on GS is the cool thing

SurgicalMenace800d ago

It's not people's hate that would lose people's jobs, it's the shady business practices of the company. So what you're saying is that because people work there individuals should just support what they don't want to? Sound advice; Hitler too had supporters, employees, and advocates but people go around hating him too. They only hate because of other people's bad stories or experiences; they only spoke bad about him because they wanted attention. It's been decades; lets give his way another go. With your logic anything could be made to sound good.🤷🏾‍♂️

neutralgamer1992800d ago

SurgicalMenace

Seriously you used Hitler as an example to say company has shady practices

You don't have to shop at GS there are many other retailers. I shop there and vast majority of my experiences have been positive and most of the employees are super nice

SurgicalMenace800d ago

Just having some fun, bro.🤣🤣

Mandingo2020800d ago

There are other places to work besides GS. Plus, their benefits are trash so why not work somewhere else?

REDGUM801d ago

And none of those game you speak of you actually own as they are digital not physical & would cost more than $20 as the subscription costs more than that.

Mandingo2020800d ago (Edited 800d ago )

You know you can get game pass ultimate codes for the low on cdkeys or g2a right? You don't need to have a subscription 😂. GS is trash and I'd rather support the mom and pop game store here instead.

BlackTar187800d ago

Why are you people so full of hate? GameStop gives people jobs and provides a physical appearance to see things in the flesh and not just some soulless online experience.

Mandingo2020800d ago

You can get physical at mom and pop game stores plus you can get it online. GS is trash

neutralgamer1992800d ago

Because Mom and Pop shops cost two to three times more for the same product Angie the answer

BlackTar187800d ago (Edited 800d ago )

Mom and pop stores cost more and have even harder time competing against the internet. Also lie to me and tell you have a couple mom and pop stores near you selling games then lie and tell me you shop there.

IanTH801d ago

These sales, while potentially great, really struggle to be valuable given you can't easily parse what games are in stock. You can't just say "only show what is online & what are in my nearby stores". Probably 60-75% of these games in these massive lists are out of stock for shipping, and out of stock locally. It makes it a chore to find anything you'd want, much less 4 of them, much less enough if you wanted to get to a free shipping tier. It's a bummer.
