“A text’s unity lies not in its origins but in its destination.” Apologies for getting all undergraduate literary theory on you all, but Roland Barthes’ famous essay The Death of the Author could well have been a precursor to good game design. This article is a great concept, and does very well exploring this game. Stories are character-driven, and while novels, films, and traditional RPGs largely craft the characters and subsequent plot for the consumer to merely enjoy, XCOM gives just enough circumstantial character information (capabilities, name, race, gender, and the like) to frame the player's own creation. XCOM isn't just a gaming experience - it's a creative experience.
