Character Arc Throwing: An exploration of organic narratives in XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within

“A text’s unity lies not in its origins but in its destination.” Apologies for getting all undergraduate literary theory on you all, but Roland Barthes’ famous essay The Death of the Author could well have been a precursor to good game design. Games mean a lot of different things to different people, but what I believe they do best is to provide the player with a space in which to create meaning.

I've been addicted to this game for the past month. All thanks to Playstation Plus. Instant Game Collection FTMFW!

Hows the multiplayer on the ps3 version? PC version has all kinds of wack ass bugs going on. Enemy within fixed a lot of things but still, they could release a patch for the original to make it playable.

This article is a great concept, and does very well exploring this game. Stories are character-driven, and while novels, films, and traditional RPGs largely craft the characters and subsequent plot for the consumer to merely enjoy, XCOM gives just enough circumstantial character information (capabilities, name, race, gender, and the like) to frame the player's own creation. XCOM isn't just a gaming experience - it's a creative experience.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.
