Can Reaper of Souls Save Diablo 3? | Game Front

The first of two planned expansions, Reaper of Souls, was revealed at Gamescom last week. While many former fans of the series have written the third installment off long ago, those who stuck with it over the past year know that Blizzard has been actively working to improve the game. The Diablo 3 of today is a better game than on release day, but if it is to have the longevity of Diablo 2, a lot more work needs to be done.

Over 12 million in sales and a million users a day says that Diablo 3 doesn't need saving. After the releases on the home consoles and the expansion comes out it'll be one of the most successful games in a decade. Like it or not.

Don't worry Dan, the title of the article is just a cry for attention and web traffic. I just got the game 3 months ago and played so much it damn near put my job in jeopardy (I'm 31). Knowing full well I had to be at the office in the morning, I would play till 4 or 5 am on weeknights. Can't wait for the expansion....

heck on xbox360 black ops is the best selling non bundled game and it only did 12 million

Sales doesn't = Quality. Diablo 3 is a far cry from what the previous game accomplished, and it will never reach that level. Not even the expansion can save this game, because one core of the problem is the AH, which isn't there on consoles.

Now just onto the rest of the problems..

True sales don't necessarily mean quality. But they don't exactly indicate a lack of quality either. However Diablo 3 has doubled the combines sales of Diablo 1 and 2 and their expansions. That is enough to insure that Blizzard need only look at the numbers to see that their game is a monumental success. Seeing as how detractors of the games don't have any hard data to back up a dislike of the games other than personal preference and seeing as the game has had huge sales and a metacritic score of 88 (the exact same score as Diablo 2) I don't see any reason why Blizzard wouldn't keep doing exactly what they have been doing as it seems to be working extremely well.

What everyone seems to dismiss so easily when they applaud the "success" of Diablo III, is how fast the game devolved, how quickly the builds became limited. Don't jest by spouting numbers or stats. Correlation =/= Causation. A game can and sometimes does fail despite metacritic opinion, or games sold.

The other part commonly missed is the fan base. If a game were truly great, would fans look at it with but a mere 3.8 score? Are you to tell me only the ones who hate the game decided to score it and the others didn't care? That seems like a shallow love for a game of which you devote so much to, or so you claim.

A game cannot be considered critically acclaimed if those in number are unkind with their opinions of it. A game that sells 15 million to only have 1 million playing, seems incredibly shy for the number it should be at.
