10 Features That Should Be In Every Modern Shooter

I know hey. Every console these days has usb ports(wii? Dunno). Why we are still getting shooters without mouse and keyboard support, I dont know.

7. Depends on the game. I think every game should have the ability to crouch, but being able to prone could possibly break level design in some spots.
6. No! We do not need every game to be the same, and we definitely do not need every game to be realistic.
5. Again, no. This feature belongs in games where the game heavily uses this feature. Squad control would only prove detrimental to a game where it is simply a throw in.
4. Sure, why not. BUT an extremely solid game type is better than several poorly designed game types.

1. No. Not every game needs a multiplayer aspect. In fact, I think more games need stronger single-player campaigns.

Well most of them sound okay, but really I don't always want a cover system, sometimes I like to rush into the heat of battle like im rambo and smack guys around in the face without fear of death.

Also Squad control, no, i don't want to be in control of the squad all the time. I like being a lone wolf, or I like just being apart of a massive battle, sometimes I just like to shut my mind off and stop thinking for a while, giving me the responsibility of controlling my squad mates all the time ruins my chance to just sit back, relax and veg out as I blow stuff up, I don't want every game to be a rainbow six vegas clone.

For the cover system, it really depends on the game. If you're going to have a fast paced shooter like Halo 3 or Resistance...cover might just be useless. But that's just me.

in my opinion:

EVERY shooter game should have melee (most do, but not all)... its the funniest and best way to kill someone in a shooting game .. screw the guns .. u gotta smack people with guns, or knife ppl ( < call of duty 4... also fukin awesome too)

I actually don't agree with this article. Points 10, 9, 3 and 1 I agree with for EVERY shooter. Opinions on the rest:

8- Must be realistic cover. Cod4 and Uncharted come to mind. Bullets don't bounce off of tin sheeting. Really this point only applies to 3rd person shooters because the way you control your character can be cumbersome if you don't have a "lock to cover" system, where as 1st person shooters its just a natural part of the game.

7- Depends on the style of the game. Sure if levels are designed with the necessity to crouch/go prone, then you need to be able to. For some games prone in particular is not really needed.

6- Weapons sometimes need to be unrealistic to balance the game. Also lack of fire modes on guns helps create classes(cod4). Slightly changing the way guns perform on games adds strategy and the need to use different weapons. Further more, shotguns don't "throw enemies around like rag dolls ". THey make a bloody mess, but making a game look like a movie doesn't make the game realistic.

5- Sometimes it is apart of the story that you are not the leader. You don't give orders to the squad. Not all games hame you as the ultimate hero all of the time. Sometimes its about being part of a team. Making you do all the work sometimes makes the game more challenging.

4- You dabble in to much and you wont be great at anything. Sure a bit of variety here and there, but if your core gameplay is great I shouldn't be able to get enough.

2- More of an edit, I think where co-op is not suitable for the single player campaign a separate story line should be done for co-op play. Some story lines can really benefit from not having that partner or squad to back you up all the time. Id prefer a strong single player story to a weak single player/ co-op story any day, although thats just me.

Decent list. I wouldnt say all of them need to be in every game but good features none the less.

I have a few peeves with shooters if any devs are listening.

1. Totally mappable controls.
How hard is it really to make every button, and I mean every button, even down to L3, R3 and the L,R,U,D on the Digital pad mappable.
Theres nothing more annoying to totally learn a control screen on one game, only to pick up another that has the same moves on different buttons and you find yourself throwing grenades instead of switching on your thermal vision. Resistance did it, I'm pretty sure all the Timesplitters did it from memory. Its simple to do and potentially a gamebreaker without it.

2. Vehicle controls.
Why is is so hard for your control schemes to switch on the fly as you enter a vehicle. Why cant your standard shooter control simply become LS to steer and Cross and Square to accelerate and brake. FPS controls on cars are not intuitive. Car controls on cars are. When you get in a car in GTA your button change to different functions. Whats the big deal?

3. Can only carry a couple guns.
OK, it worked to a certain degree in Halo, I guess because it was different and added an element of strategy. And its cool in games like Rainbow 6 or GRAW which are more tactical and you only really need a couple weapons. But C'mon, why limit a game like Gears to 3 guns at a time? For realism? Theres nothing realistic about those games, why start with that aspect of it? So many others that I cant reall think of right now have follow the Halo template and they're nearly always out of place. I like shooters like Resistance and Halflife 2 (just examples) where you carry every gun you find in the game. You might run out of ammo from time to time but you still have it. You come across certain areas and then you actually have more strategy about you will tackle it. Snipe from afar, or run down there with grenades and a shotty. More options are always better. Not wishing half an hour ago when you saw that rocket launcher with 2 shells that you had picked it up, or course that would mean you were without your assault rifle all this time. I play shooter to kill things in different ways and play to my style, more guns the better.

5. Bring back 4 man splitscreen and Bots. Man we used to play The Facility on Perfect Dark over and over again as a 3 man team against 6 Bots of varying degrees of intelligence. We would hold the main hall near the health and just fight off the waves of bots while also using you laptops guns (best weapon ever) as sentries. Or humans Vs Ducks Vs Elvises on Timesplitters. Classic. Having said that.....

6. More single Player content. Everythings all about Multiplayer now. I dont care about the 1000th variation of Death Match. I love the single player aspect because I like to play at my own pace which is usually slow and sneaky. All DLC seems to be just extra maps for DM. How about a few SP levels now and then. I do like Co-op alot though so I'm glad this is coming into games more and more.

7. Games that reward different play styles.
A good example would be a game like Farcry which lets you play in different styles. To clear a beach I snuck up with a silenced MP5. Using distraction and stealth I would take out the guards one by one with more than one or two or them ever being aware of me. It took about half an hour but felt great. My friend play the exact same beach. He starts shooting with the snipers rifle alerting everyone with the first shot. He manages to get about 3 or 4 of them as they charge him and then he switches to the M16 and starts running at them like a fricken Moose. 2 minutes, he's cleared the beach. Nicely down. And so cool that a game lets you play so many different ways.

GTA4 for PS3 needs mods. DLC wouldn't hold a candle to the PS3 version if R* gave us mods. Imagine the possibilities.
