Neat idea, but if it takes off, you have to think there will eventually be similar models sold for half the price.

With the Vita's recent price cut on both the Console and it's Memory Cards, The Vita now seems like a better deal.

I will get both the NVIDIA Shield and the Vita.
Both of them allows you to play games at a distance from either a PC (Shield) or the PS4 (Vita)

However, I'll need to state a few flaws about this on both.

First, for the Shield to be able to play your PC games remotely, you need to keep your PC on.
The Vita can open and close the PS4 from the internet, same as the PS3.

Second, the biggest one. You need Specific NVIDIA Graphic Cards on your PC and only Certain Compatible Games will work, like Tomb Raider. So this is almost like the PS3/Vita we know today.
However, both the Vita and the PS4 uses AMD Hardware and since it's implemented in the Infrastructure of the OS.
Well, EVERY Game will be playable at a Distance.

However, If you want to have Choice of the games you play at a Distance, it would be preferable to buy your games digitally, because there's only 1 disc player, so you can only have 1 Disc Game but Many Games on the Internal/Upgradable HDD.

Prices on Memory Cards for the Vita are way too high, but they will come down, at least 50% cheaper, hopefully.

Another fail about the NVIDIA and Android games that are on the Vertical instead of the Horizontal.
They're unplayable.

However, The NVIDIA Shield is very powerful and it's priced at 300$. Vita at 200$.

The NVIDIA Shield really interest me, but since you can get an Xperia Z phone and wirelessly connect a Dualshock 3 controller, giving you the aspect of a phone/gaming device with a power phone (Especially the Xperia Z Ultra)
But, with a DS3 and a Smartphone, you can hold both at the same time.

So there. I'm buying both.

I own a Shield. AWESOME. It's not for everybody, but if you're an old school gamer, the emulators are fantastic.

ATi_Elite3898d ago

I still see no reason to buy an Nvidia Shield.

I rather buy a laptop or save that money for a future Gaming Tablet.

PSvita is DEAD. SOny should of added a phone feature to it. I've seen more little Kiddies with iPhones/Galaxies than with PSvitas.

This thing does offer a few features that no clone will be able to do. Like streaming graphics from your NVidia pc card for almost desktop like quality performance. Also it does have the lastest/fastest mobile chip. Unlike psvita, this thing can get anything available on the android market including the thousand's of free games.

But with all that said, it does some short comings (exclusives & longevity unknown). It certainly isn't for everyone. But my point is, it does manage to do a few things very well that the competition cant touch atm.

I occationally game on my Samsung note 2 with a moga controller. Mind u I get about 2-3 hours tops of battery life when I do play. And this is from a huge 5.5" phone with the biggest battery on the market. Nvidia rates their device at around 25 hours of gaming, so another positive. All in all, I still wouldn't buy this device until it gets cheaper because I already own something close to it.

For sometime, I'd been contemplating getting a Shield to replce my Steam Link hw as the Shield is a more capable 4K/60 device for streaming. Happy they notified us before I finally decided to pull the trigger on getting one.

amazinglover492d ago

You can still stream using the shield just not natively, you'll have download and use the stream link app on the shield.

They likely are not supporting it natively to save money on developing and maintaining the feature and letting valves app do it instead.

I hope this doesn't end the Moonlight service functionality

... and yet no support for PS4

Cernunnos1188d ago

PS4 controller works just fine with mine.

Vits1188d ago

It's nice to have the support. But without the unique functions of the DualSense I wouldn't go for it unless you already have a PS5 laying around. As there are many other controllers compatible with the system that will also cost much less.

1nsomniac1188d ago

I don’t think anyone would be planing on buying the PS5 controller for the shield specifically. The idea is that if you have a ps5 with the controller and would prefer to use it on the shield instead of the supplied shield controller, then you can.

Vits1188d ago

Is more of general advice. For PC gaming is exactly the same thing, while the DS4 was a fairly popular option for having a good quality/price ratio the Dual Sense is better to be avoided as you are not going to get anything out of it's special features. But will be paying the premium anyway.

Also only older models and the Gaming Edition of the Shield have a supplied controller. For all the rest including the newer cylindrical and Pro editions you have to supply your own if you plan on doing any gaming at all on it.

1nsomniac1188d ago (Edited 1188d ago )

The cylindrical one doesn’t come with a controller. The rest do, there is no gaming edition. I have one.

Vits1188d ago

Yeah you either got a old model or got the Gaming package and didn't notice. The newest 2019 version of it does not come with a controller.

1nsomniac1187d ago

According to that your right the newest pro version doesn’t come with a controller, which seems ridiculous to remove a bundled item and still charge the same if not more for it.

I have the 2017 version.

Vits1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

To be fair. They did also change the SoC of the units.
Both 2019 versions use the X1+ that is a 25% performance bump over the normal X1 of the older versions. And it really makes a difference for some things like GC/Wii emulation.

But it is worth $60 (controller price)? It's very debatable.

Just ordered my Shield T.V (new tube looking one), coming tomorrow, it should pair nice with my pc. This is great news as I have both PS5 and Xbox controllers no need to buy another controller.

ouch that home hardware is lacking

Mr_Writer851540d ago

But the content is not. And that's the key.

I'm going to try this simply because my laptop is old and I have no desire/room/time to buy/build a gaming PC.

Yet I have a big library of Steam games my laptop struggles to play. I can simply dip in and out as and when I choose and play these games for a small fee.

When I've had my fill, I can cancel, no extra cost.

Google hardware and even tech is superior. However, cost and content wise, it blows it out of the water.

VincenteFox1539d ago

I didn't mention it in the piece, because it wasn't really relevant (since I was downscaling to take the comparison image) but the home hardware is a 5700XT, a 3700X, 32 gb ram at 3600 mhz and an X570 board.
