The Co-op Podcast 55: Are Season Passes for DLC Worth It?

Gary Swaby at TheKoalition.com writes: This week on The co-op we had a full panel, with myself, Edward Velasquez, Richard Bailey, Carl Daniel, Jakejames Lugo and Thomas Skidmore. July is notorious for being a pretty dry news month, but with this in mind we managed to have some intellectual discussions on a number of topics. One of those discussions was regarding season passes, which many developers have been using to get gamers to subscribe to their DLC content. Although we're all very excited for the Bioshock Burial At Sea DLC, some of us feel like it wasn't worth paying for a season pass immediately following the game's release due to the fact we were so in the dark. Let us know how you feel about season passes.

We also touched on the fact that Call of Duty: Ghosts is now confirmed for the Wii U. Will this announcement help boost its low sales? Fez 2 was officially cancelled by Phil Fish and the Polytron team, but how do we feel about it? Carl Daniel also gave us a preview of his review of the Ouya console, look out for his full review soon.

Finally we held a segment specifically aimed at addressing some of the recent next-gen headlines; including the news that Sony's party chat system will not require you to be a Playstation Plus subscriber, and that the friends list will be expanded to 2000. On the Microsoft side of things we discuss their decision to allow self-publishing on the platform. Edward Velasquez then get's extremely excited over some of the recently revealed TV multitasking features.

I think Borderlands 2 was the only game that actually made having a season pass worth it. They had a wealth of content for their users.

mattdillahunty4073d ago

i completely agree. i'm playing through Borderlands 2 now, and so far the DLC packs have been absolutely worth it.

if you assume every DLC from the season pack is going to be worth your money, then yeah, technically it would be a better value to buy the season pass than to buy each DLC separately.

the problem with paying ahead of time, though, is that the DLCs could be duds. but since you've already paid your money, there's nothing you can do about it. if you wait and buy each separately, you can ask for opinions from friends, read forum posts and reviews, etc. that way you can know if it's worth your money.

the other problem is that it gives publishers the idea that we're so mindless as consumers that they can just give us an incomplete game and we'll shell out money in advance so that they can ration the rest of the game out to us. now, if the game is fully finished and the developers and publishers decide they want to give us some extra content for a price, then i'm ok with that. it does take money to develop games and DLC. but i don't want it getting out of hand to the point where they're literally cutting out sections of the game and locking it on the disc, then making us pay for it.

seasons passes are ok if it's not cut out of the standard game and each chunk of DLC is worth it. it can be a good value for the consumer, and it will give them extra content for a game they enjoy. Borderlands 2 is a good example of a season pass done right.

but if it gets out of hand, or if you pay ahead for crappy DLC, then it starts to lose its appeal.

NOPE. Not unless you know what you getting. Max Payne burned me so bad that I had third degree burns. Never again will I blindly buy season passes without knowing what Im getting. I don't want more MP maps when I get season passes, I want fantastic content with story.

Don't think so, haven't actually bought any, so that probably answers it...

All Call of Duty Games Ranked from Worst to Best

BLG writes: "Call of Duty has to be the most recognizable franchise on the planet. They didn’t get that way by only making a handful of games.

COD has a long and storied career. Launching as a PC WW2 first-person shooter, Call of Duty has gone through numerous makeovers and been on just about every system. The series has gone through some serious highs and tragic lows. I’ll be looking at each Call of Duty game, the good the bad, and the ugly."

Vanguard better be at the fkn bottom. Can’t believe ppl haven’t eviscerated that game with all its lacking

Minimoth951d ago

Yeah, it's close to the bottom. There are a couple of worse ones. Infinite Warfare definitely deserves its place.

KyRo951d ago

There's a number a lot worse than Vangaurd. It's also a lot better than that car crash Treyarch released before it.

XbladeTeddy951d ago

World at War is my favourite. Didn't know the N-Gage had a Call of Duty.

MadLad950d ago

Same for me.
I was never huge into Call of Duty, but I sunk a lot of time into WaW.
Both the campaign and the multiplayer are on point. Wouldn't mind a remaster.

I quit on CoD for a long while. Though I'm the odd man out that actually really enjoyed the campaign for WWII, being I got it through Humble monthly way back when.

TheLigX951d ago

I really enjoyed the Infinite campaign. Multiplayer... not so much.

Yppupdam951d ago

I agree, The Infinite campaign feels more like it's own thing that they slapped the CoD name on. If it stood on it's own, (sans the CoD name) I think it could have been it's own scifi franchise. And a damn good looking game, to boot. I never bothered to play the multiplayer.

MW 2019 apart from the desastrous file sizes is way better than AW.

MadLad950d ago

That was one I grabbed for Playstation because it pretty much just came out during the Redbox purge of videogames, and I got it for dirt cheap.

It was great coming home to an update every night, and watching one game eat up almost half my console's memory.

Amplitude951d ago (Edited 951d ago )

Will get disagrees but Infinite Warfare campaign was really good. Decent story, set pieces were amazing and if it didn't have the CoD game on it I'm sure people would have been more into it. Advanced Warfare was alright too. Titanfall 2 was just 1000 times better than both but I enjoyed them for their campaigns. I literally barely gaf about the story I'm in it for the set pieces and 5 hours of being stoned watching cool nonsense happen if I'm in the mood to play a CoD campaign. If I'm looking for a deep plot I'm gonna go somewhere else.
Ghosts was the worst story-wise though lol that cliffhanger ending was so bs.

Also MW 2019 was sick and is one of the best CoD games in yeeeears not sure why it's so low on this dude's list. Campaign was great, multiplayer was great and Warzone was fun for a while. Over it now but shrugs.

Beat the Vanguard campaign too but I can't even remember a single thing about it other than that it felt like it was 45 minutes long. Might be the most forgettable thing I've ever played lol just fully erased from my brain

Top 10 Games We’re Happy Got Cancelled

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Sometimes, a game getting cancelled is actually a blessing in disguise that either helps the developer or game series reach new heights with what actually does come next or just saves our time and money by keeping what would obliviously have been a bad time lost forever."

You're happy for the lay offs too?

PiNkFaIrYbOi1871d ago

Why would anyone be happy about any game being cancelled?

1871d ago
0hMyGandhi1871d ago

okay, I'll bite.
I friggin adored Arkane's version of Prey (it's basically the spiritual successor to System Shock that we never got) but I would have loved to see the bounty hunter iteration of the sequel as well, perhaps as it's own IP.

2ndhandcorn1871d ago

Scalebound for me was happy it got canned , the concept seemed picked out of a hat lol terrible.

Knightofelemia1871d ago

That RE title on Gameboy colour looks like an Atari Lynx game
